Age of Ambition: Chasing Fortune, Truth, and Faith in the New China, by Evan Osnos

Review

“In the pages of the New Yorker, Evan Osnos has portrayed, explained and poked fun at this new China better than any other writer from the West or the East. In Age of Ambition, Osnos takes his reporting a step further, illuminating what he calls China's Gilded Age, its appetites, challenges and dilemmas, in a way few have done.” ―John Pomfret, Washington Post“Age of Ambition is… a riveting and troubling portrait of a people in a state of extreme anxiety about their identity, values and future, [and] a China rived by moral crisis and explosive frustration.” ―Judith Shapiro, New York Times“For those new to China, Mr Osnos beautifully portrays the nation in all its craziness, providing a ringside seat for the greatest show on earth.” ―The Economist“Beautifully written ... an absolute must-read.” ―Edward Steinfeld, Harvard Magazine“China's Gilded Age has been every bit as fascinating, colorful and tragic as our own -- and [Osnos] offers an engrossing account of it… [He] understands the depths of the transformations, the complexity of the contradictions, and the fragility of the overall enterprise.” ―Chicago Tribune“Evan Osnos ... has put his keen insight and intrepid research skills to use in his exploration of the internal intellectual and spiritual infrastructure of China's rise.” ―Dan Blumenthal, The National Interest“[Osnos] adeptly chronicles… China's 35-year journey from poverty and collective dogmatism to a dynamic if cut-throat era of competition, self-promotion and materialism.” ―Julie Makinen, Los Angeles Times“Age of Ambition [is] eloquent and comprehensive…” ―Jonathan Mirsky, New York Times Book Review“Age of Ambition is a splendid and entertaining picture of 21st-century China…” ―Michael Fathers, Wall Street Journal“Evan Osnos gives us twenty-first-century China the way the best American journalists gave us the Gilded Age--he introduces us to outsized characters, tells tales of aspiration, success, and defeat, rakes the muck of corruption and repression, and captures the tremendous energy, as well as the darker impulses, of a society in the throes of a historic transformation.” ―George Packer, author of The Assassins' Gate and The Unwinding“The very hardest thing to convey about modern China is the combination of hope and despair, idealism and crassness, coordinated mass action and chaotic individual scheming, that you encounter each day. Evan Osnos has captured all parts of this disorienting 'reality,' but he has done so much more. Beautifully written, humane but critical-minded, funny on every page, Age of Ambition offers a better understanding of China's process of 'becoming' than most people could ever gain by living there. China veterans and amateurs alike will find it an illuminating and delightful read.” ―James Fallows, author of China Airborne“How often have travelers asked: 'What is the one book about China that I should read before I depart?' Alas, for years I have had no good answer to this question. But now, Evan Osnos has provided a stellar candidate. Wonderfully engaging, readable and informative, this vivid tableau of actors from all walks of Chinese life goes a long way to helping us make sense out of the often confusing complexity that is today's China.” ―Orville Schell, coauthor of Wealth and Power: China's Long March to the Twenty-first Century“The best book on China I've ever read. Witty, indispensable, and often moving. I look forward to stealing Evan Osnos's wisdom and passing it off as my own for years to come.” ―Gary Shteyngart, author of Little Failure and Super Sad True Love Story“The rise of China is the biggest story of the past twenty-five years. Evan Osnos captures the country in all its striving, thunderous diversity, through a narrative that moves, provokes, and makes us laugh. Age of Ambition is a marvel of great reporting, careful thinking, and powerful writing.” ―Dexter Filkins, author of The Forever War“For most of a decade, Evan Osnos has been one of the most energetic, skilled, and thoughtful observers of China. Whether he's accompanying Chinese tourists to the Best Western in Luxembourg or watching Ai Weiwei blur the lines between performance and protest, Osnos is always engaging. This is a wonderful book.” ―Peter Hessler, author of River Town: Two Years on the Yangtze and Country Driving: A Chinese Road Trip“If you have time to read only one book about China today, read this one. Woven from vignettes of Chinese life at many different levels, it provides unerring insights into what makes the Chinese the people they are while wearing its learning so lightly that the narrative never flags. It should be in every tourist's baggage and every diplomat's library.” ―Philip Short, author of Mao: A Life

China books seem especially tricky to write, because the writer has to please two very different types of American reader: the one who has a great deal of experience with China, and the one who does not. The first reader cringes if he has to read yet another description of how Shenzhen used to be a fishing village; but the second reader can't really understand Shenzhen unless you explain this fact. (As a strange hybrid of these two readers -- I lived in China but have no deep expertise in its history -- I often experience the worst of both worlds.)This book strikes a rare balance. It's a very absorbing read, and its multiple story-lines are impressively woven together, without any of the stitches showing. The people Osnos writes about run the gamut from a public figure like Lin Yifu (the World Bank economist who defected to mainland China from Taiwan in 1979) to an obscure figure like Michael Zhang, a young energetic optimist whom Osnos first meets at a Crazy English conference and then follows for a few years. (Zhang turns into one of the most interesting characters in the book.)Osnos tells all these individual stories against the backdrop of most of the major events in China of the last five years: the violence in Xinjiang, the Liu Xiaobo fiasco, the "Jasmine" events of 2011, Ai Weiwei's ordeal, the flight of Chen Guangcheng, the Bo Xilai scandal, the bullet train crash, and so on. You learn a great deal about all these events, but the book is anchored in its very humane profiles of individual Chinese who are trying to make their lives better.

An brilliant work of authorship. Perhaps one of the finest pieces of writing I have read - ever. It is impossible to capture the essence of a society. Other authors take an econometric approach leading to prosaic works. Evan Osnos is crisp, gets the meaning out while keeping a fast paced, almost thriller like composition. Evan picks unique personalities and with them we travel through new age of China. Book shows how the society is conflicted - it espouses capitalism as the only known source of alleviating poverty, yet it finds that adopting the "capitalistic method" conflicts with their past which espoused homogeneity, a party which is not accountable for its actions and a population which is almost irreparably split into haves and have nots. The book is one of a kind.

Over 20 years ago, I traveled regularly to China to work mostly as a reporter/researcher on business. In the mid-90s, with the economy humming and giant new Chinese companies emerging, most citizens seemed to have struck a bargain: so long as their lives were improving, they were more or less content to look away from politics. The Tiananmen Square movement and its bloody aftermath went unmentioned or were hushed up; the authoritarian regime remained intact and heavy. Now, according to Evan Osnos in his brilliant look at early 21C China, that equation is changing.Osnos breaks the book into 3 sections. First, there is "chasing fortune", which is about the new ambitions and new rich. When I was there, people did not want to stand out as individuals much, but most of them seemed hopeful that things were improving, in a kind of Chinese version of the American dream. Now, tiny sections of society have become immensely rich, spawning all manner of corruption and inequality. This is very fun for the coverage of the aspirations of the young and the stories of some who made it big, including entrepreneurs, bureaucrats, nationalist bloggers, and writers.Second, there is the search for "truth". This is about those who are pushing against the system, challenging it overtly over the internet as well as by legal action. Osnos' coverage ranges from dissidents to investigative journalists and activists. To his credit, Osnos sought out a wide array of people, getting to know many of them personally and following their careers as the book progressed. Their trials and tribulations can be very difficult and painful, as in the efforts to break the performance artist and architect Ai Weiwei. But there is also a journalist who instinctually knows just how far she should push things, often getting warnings and even brief periods of detention. I was astonished to learn that 1 in 100 people in China is engaged in some form of state-sponsored information control, either as censorship or surveillance or covert counter-agitprop. Though the regime is holding on, no one seems to believe in its ideology anymore; many even doubt its competence. (I.e. the popular view in the circles I wrote in - that an authoritarian regime is superior because it can make decisions quickly and with few people involved - appears to stupidly over-estimate its accomplishments.)Finally, there is the section on "faith", exploring the meaning in their lives, be it religious, ideological, or political. This follows the evolution of characters we've gotten to know. What struck me was the feeling that growth and opportunity were stalling, that the combination of official opaqueness and frustrated ambitions were swelling into what could become an immense challenge to the party if it seeks to maintain its monopoly on power. In other words, the old bargain is in dire need of renewal, perhaps in the form of new freedoms and even the emergence of new parties, particularly if economic growth is slowing. This was the thing that had most changed since I explored corporate boardrooms, met with talented workers, and taught writing at Beida. It is a potential sea change that no one should under-estimate.Osnos' book is one of the best recent ones I have read on China. It is mostly about the period he was there, 2005-2013, which saw the rise of the internet and social networking (his portrayal of their impact under the heavy hand of the sate is nuanced and surprising). As such, it is a snapshot and should be read now, as it will no doubt be over-taken by events in the near future. Beyond his first rate reporting, Osnos is a beautiful writer. It was a great update for me, an old hand China watcher. Recommended with enthusiasm.

3.5 ✨When I first started freakonomics, I could not put the book down, but once I reached approximately 60% you are finished with the book and all you are left with is articles from the author and references. So In fairness, had freakonomics not included all the articles and references, I would have rated it a 4.Some chapters, depending on the information, was more interesting than others. I found the chapter on crime rates dropping due to abortion to be particularly intriguing. They present a valuable side of an argument that I had never pondered. The chapter on how names can affect your success was also very interesting and just learning how they generate that data and how and when the names overlap. Very interesting. All in all, I would recommend this book to all my friends who appreciate random tidbits of information or who have a curiosity towards economics and how it plays a part in random parts of our world.

I’ve heard of this book for years, but never bothered to read it because I was already an economist and didn’t think I needed to read a popular summary of Steven Levitt’s work.[1] My impression was that the book summarized his work in a popular (non-academic) style that helped people understand what economists do. I though that the book was useful in this respect in helping people understand what I do. Indeed, the most common reaction I get from people when telling them that I am an economist is that they have read Freakonomics, which implies that they have at least seen some work similar to what I do at aguanomics.[2]It turns out that I was mistaken in my initial beliefs.I just read this 2004 book 2006 revision, and it's made me think a bit more about how we (economists) communicate with the general public, and I think that some ways are better than others. First, there are textbooks, which describe the tools that economists use to put their theories into practice. Many many people have told me “I didn’t learn anything in economics. All I remember was a lot of math and curves.” This depressing outcome results from lecturers who merely reproduce problems and equations on the blackboard, without helping students understand either why those theories are used or how they came to be so popular with economists.[3] Second, there are books that explain how economists think or how their thinking has evolved as they have tried to understand and summarize the people’s behaviour. These books, in my opinion, are the most interesting — and challenging — because they push people to revisit their assumptions and perspectives.[4] These are the books that I would recommend to people looking to “think like an economist” or, to be blunt, to think more accurately about how they and those around them actually behave. Third, there are books like mine [pdf] that try to explain how to improve failing policies using basic economic insights and incentives. Finally, there are books like Freakonomics that reproduce academic papers in a popular form. These books — like Economic Gangsters — give the public a limited vision of research without explaining the struggles of getting the right data or explaining the limitations of theories that are used (or not) in the final paper.Freakonomics is therefore NOT the book that I would recommend to anyone interested in (a) learning economic theory, (b) learning about how economists think, or (c) understanding the world or thinking of ways to improve it.This book with a memorable (but useless) name provides readers with just-so stories that are good for cocktail conversations but not for understanding economics.[5]For example,Legalized abortion explains the drop in crime in the US. Not only do Steve and Steve back off from the main claims of the original paper (they add other factors), but this theory has been falsified by others (see this and this). What struck me is their ongoing attempts to hold onto at least some elements in the original claim in later blog posts in what I’d call a “my-ladydoth-protest-too-much” manner.Real estate agents serve themselves better than they serve clients when selling their own homes. As a former real estate agent, I had to agree with their basic premise, but I thought their explanation too simplistic.[6] The most obvious problem is that agents have an entirely different understanding of themselves as sellers as well as of the markets. Surely that different information (and the resulting “patience” that gets them a higher price as sellers) matters?Looking over their other chapters (on cheating sumo wrestlers, drug dealers who live with their moms, the KKK as a multilevel marketing organization, etc.), I agree that the chapters are interesting and thought provoking, but they do not provide “lessons on the hidden side of everything.” Instead, they read like a series of magazine articles whose quirky “insights” might contribute to your next cocktail conversation. The authors say that they want you to ask more questions and see the world differently, but what tools have they given to you in this book?[7] I didn’t detect any reliable technique (except perhaps to collect a neat dataset and call Steve Levitt), and that’s where I was disappointed. Freakonomics does not really reveal the hidden side of everything. Indeed, it’s more likely to mislead you into thinking you’ve learned something, when you’ve only learned an interesting angle on a complex topic on which you may lack either the experience or methods needed to put it into a useful context.[8]Take their example of the “underpaid” drug dealer who they say faces a higher risk of death than someone on Death Row in Texas (and thus must be overestimating the gains from their job). Does this statistical analysis mean that those street dealers are irrational? I don’t think so. As all economics students learn, you need to look at their opportunity cost (i.e., the costs and benefits of their potential other choices). In this case, street dealers are (a) NOT condemned to death, (b) not able to find other work with their experience, and (c) not aware of their statistical mortality as much as their potential wealth. Those street runners are “taking their chances” in the same way as Americans are “living the dream,” i.e., in ignorance of reality.[9]Bottom Line: I give this book THREE STARS. Dubner and Levitt present interesting puzzles worthy of cocktail conversation, but they overstate their contributions and accuracy (“numbers don’t lie” but theory can be incomplete or just wrong). I suggest that anyone interested in understanding how economics works and applying those lessons to “the hidden side of everything” read Economics in One Lesson by Henry Hazlitt. It’s free to download and provides a really useful perspective that anyone can apply to any topic they care about.[10](1) I’ve met Steven Levitt. He's a fine person and excellent economist, but this book is too “pop” in its oversimplification of his work and hagiographic treatment of his insights. Yes, he brings interesting statistical tools to“freaky” questions, but he’s not a “rogue economist exploring the hidden side of everything.” He’s just a guy with a dataset and empirical theory who finds some strong correlations. As I explain later on, he does not deliver the last word on pretty much any topic in this book. (It's interesting to see the two authors pooh-poohing people's objections to their claims in this revised edition. I get the impression that their answer is "bestseller, bitch!" more than "hmmm..., maybe we claimed too much.") Also see note 8.(2) I wrote on the human right to water and oil and water for their Freakonomics blog.(3) I published an article [pdf] on how students don’t really understand the “downward sloping demand curve” because its form is based on advanced techniques they won’t see for a few more classes (meaning "never" for those who take one class or drop the major).(4) Of those I have reviewed, I recommend Small is Beautiful, the Calculus of Consent, the Company of Strangers, Predictably Irrational, etc.(5) "Freaky" anything sounds bad to me, and "freaky" economics -- unlike most economics -- isn't useful to most people. Even worse, there's nothing freaky to the stories in terms of the economics. I wish the authors had spent more time on the basic economics (making the book a useful learning experience) and less time defending empirical research that is interesting and provocative but not really wise.(6) I corresponded with Levitt’s co-author on my objections to their working paper back in 2005. The main one was that their analysis missed the most important point: it’s better to have an agent than not to have an agent — an obvious insight that saved me about €10,000 when I bought a flat in Amsterdam. Going further, would an agent work harder for you if their commission was a flat rate rather than a percentage of the sales price? They harp about commissions as detrimental to the client’s interest due to the small share of the additional profits an agent gains from working harder on your behalf — e.g., 3% of another $10,000 is only $300, but why would an agent work any harder on a flat-rate commission? In my experience, agents love on referrals from old clients, which may explain why they work hard "despite the weak incentives."(7) My definition of an expert is “someone who knows what’s missing.” As an example of this, I give a fourth reason why it’s NOT irrational to vote (they give three weak reasons in the blog post included in their revised edition), i.e., the benefits to an individual from study and engagement in a topic.(8) My years of experience traveling in 100+ countries leads me to respect the diversity of beliefs and institutions that result in a variety of outcomes. Most academics need to exit the Ivory Tower and hit the road more often.(9) On page 134, they write “The typical parenting expert, like experts in other fields, is prone to sound exceedingly sure of himself. An expert doesn’t so much argue the various sides of an issue as plant his flag firmly on one side. That’s because an expert whose argument reeks of restraint or nuance often doesn’t get much attention.” They need to apply the same critique to themselves. (They cite themselves in later chapters — p139 on abortion and crime — as if their earlier claims were facts.) As another example, take Dubner on page 199, who writes “that paper [on police officer counts and crime] was later disputed… a gradate student found an obvious mathematical mistake in it — but Levitt’s ingenuity was obvious.” I’m not sure I’d say the same about someone whose claims rested on logic with “obvious mathematical mistakes”!(10) Hazlitt says "the art of economics consists in looking not merely at the immediate but at the longer effects of any act or policy; it consists in tracing the consequences of that policy not merely for one group but for all groups," which he summarizes as "...and then what?" That's a good question, and it's how I can easily predict that cheap water prices will lead to failing infrastructure or water shortages, why climate change is arriving "too fast" (due to a lack of carbon taxes), and so on. I'd prefer people to ask "and then what?" more often and spend less time showing off their knowledge of cheating sumo wrestlers.

Very interesting read about everyday statistics and how they explain our motivations. The writers challenge some predictions and show us, with numbers, that what we predict may sometimes be different from what happens in actuality and how people think. It's a good insight into what motivates us into doing or not doing things. It is very well written. I got the audiobook version and it was very entertaining. I even let my kids listen to some parts of it. It's one of those books where you can start at the beginning middle or end and enjoy it every time. I bought a few copies as gifts for my kids' history teacher, math teacher, and language teacher. Also, a gift for my uncle and for one of my friends. Recommended. I think it's better than the following books but they are also entertaining.

I would definitely recommend Freakonomics to any reader looking to learn economics through real current events and hot topics. Levitt uses his teaching and writing styles throughout the book to execute his ideas in an easy to digest way. This book appeals to older kids and young adults because these are the years where we first start to learn about current events and have opinions on political things. Reading this book in a high school econ class was helpful in my opinion and taught me new things I never would have related to the economy. Levitt’s teaching style appeals to most people in my opinion as he uses real examples that are fascinating to readers. When teaching new complicated ideas, it's important to make them easily understandable. Levitt does a good job of writing to all readers, not just certain classes of people. In the following quote from the book, Levitt uses this strategy to teach his point. “An incentive is a bullet, a key: an often tiny object with astonishing power to change a situation.” This quote is beneficial in teaching his lesson because this analogy is helpful in understanding what an incentive is. Most people know what incentives are, but not all, which is why he continues to explain it and does not just assume the reader knows. For many High School students, econ can be hard to understand because the ideas are more abstract, so when Levitt uses examples that are known, it's easier to comprehend the ideas. As far as writing style goes, Levitt does a good job of using complex sentences and words while keeping the writing fairly comprehensive. His audience of people who are econ beginners are easily able to understand the content because he doesn’t dumb down the topics. The following quote showcases his writing abilities as he uses good vocabulary and explanations. "Morality, it could be argued, represents the way that people would like the world to work, whereas economics represents how it actually does work."(Pg.13) He relates a word most people already know to an economic topic to teach the lesson. He teaches new econ vocabulary in an easy to understand way through examples. He keeps his examples serious yet difficult while explaining the econ. He maintains new examples every chapter while still relating them to the last. Using real-life current events also helped to teach the information in a new, academic way. Overall, Levitt did a great job on teaching economy in a fascinating way. Each chapter had a new taste and was captivating to learn about. His examples were new and exciting to read and relate to econ. The combination of complex vocabulary and ideas with his captivating teaching style is what makes Freakonomics a good choice when looking for an educational economy book.

This book is very organized and easy to see. Most recipes have a photo so I am able to expect what the final product looks like. It also has basic information such as allergy, feeding potion, feeding samples and things like that. However, the recipes are not as simple as the ones other books introduce. Pretty much all the recipes in this book have basic ingredients plus some fancy stuff, which other readers may find intriguing. When the title says "avocado, kiwi & kale yogurt", I would like the dish to be made with just avocado, kiwi, kale & yogurt (it probably wouldn't taste good though), but the author adds applesauce and mint leaves to it. This is a lot of ingredients for stage 2 baby food, which means preparation takes longer too. I'm sure it is very tasty but I would have to buy them just to make this specific baby food and probably waste some of it because I don't use them for the meals for my husband and myself. They don't cost much but I would try to be more cost effective and more ordinary for diverse audience if I were the author. Also there are many ingredients that are out of my territory. I like cooking and cook almost every day, but cardamon, flaxseed, cumin etc - they are not on my everyday grocery list.In terms of taste, nutrients and variety of flavors, this book is awesome. But then again, most recipes require lots of ingredients and preparation. If you are into gourmet food, this book could be a great choice. For me as a first time mom, just learning about baby food is so overwhelming that this book seems to be a bit too much.

I am absolutely impressed! I'm a busy working mom who wants to feed her tot the best that I can, as often as I can. The Happy Family Cookbook makes it all possible for me. The recipes are simple yet nutritious and my 2 yr old's taste buds definitely approves.I like the a lot of the recipes are easy finger foods so that my independent tot can feed himself and explore different textures and flavors.I love that the toddler meals and snack sections have combined the pictures of the food with drawings to make the meal come alive. We sit and sift through the book together and he can help pick out the meal he would like to eat. He's able to remember the recipe by the picture that it's made of.We absolutely LOVE the Salmon Rice Balls recipe! This is a meal that I can take on the go and so easy to put together. This book is not only valuable to growing babies and toddlers, I have used many of these recipes for myself. Let's face it, eating out for lunch is easy but this Organic Cookbook helps me to bring more home cooked meals with me.

This cookbook has some basic puree recipes, but also some fun older baby meal ideas. My favorite part is the toddler and big kid meals/snacks. The photos included are simply adorable and it makes my kids want to try to make the recipe with me. Having an actual cook book is such a rare thing these days, so it's nice to show my big kids recipes in a book. I also really appreciate that this comes from a baby food brand...I figure they've done their research on what's best for babies, especially since Happy Family focuses on organic unique tastes. The fact that they support homemade baby food even though they make pre packaged baby food means a lot to me. Definitely love this cute cute cook book!

This is absolutely the best baby/toddler cookbook that I have used!! The recipes are not only unique and flavorful, but also super easy to follow. I love the book's illustrations as well. My son has loved almost everything I have made from following the recipes in this book - from basic purées, to chunkier purée mixes for expanding a picky baby's palette, to fun toddler snacks and finger foods. The servings from each recipe are plenty for making batches ahead of time and then freezing for up to a few months. Most of the recipes also do a great job of sneaking in things like greens and veggies without turning my son against them - that is a miracle in and of itself! Highly recommend this book!

Really great cookbook and guide to feeding your baby. The book starts with info on starting solids, providing recipes for purees, and ends with recipes the entire family can enjoy. Clear instructions, easy and creative recipes. Beautiful and whimsical illustrations. This book would make a great gift for a mom who's about to start solids with her little one. My kids loved the baked rice balls with salmon and peas. I look forward to testing out all the recipes.

Another baby to toddler cook book to add to my collection of making baby food for my little one. I was curious on how to get the ratio right to mixing different kinds of flavors together. I’ve purchased a few of their products from target and my little one enjoyed their pureed food. It’s very detailed in the book for those who need more explanation.

Quick easy techniques and I'm very excited to try with my lil girl.

Love, Love, Love this cookbook. The recipes are delicious and my baby and I love them. I like that it has recipes for every stage. There's a picture of one of the recipes I made. So easy!

This was a hilarious and informative read. It's got recipes, history, language lessons and a good dose of jokes on every page. I'd recommend reading it if you're Italian or live in an area with a lot of Italian folks, as it will help you to understand their jokes, culinary habits and culture. Writing humor can be really difficult, but the author did an excellent job of it. I had a great time reading the book and laughing along with his explanations of funerals, sayings, stereotypes, the Mafia, and everything in between. Obviously, it's not a book for anyone you wouldn't show an R-rated movie to!

Italy is the darling of many a history buff and this book will surely be enjoyable for anyone who enjoys facts about the Roman Empire. However this book covers a plethora of subjects from Italian food to pop culture to discussions of the...completely nonexistent mafia. The book is a fun engaging read, it's difficult to write something that's both educational and enjoyable and this book adds some excellent levity between facts. I'd suggest this for anyone who is interested in Italy, or Italian American culture. Sometimes it's nice to broaden ones horizons and I bet if you're Italian this book can give you a newfound appreciation for your wonderful culture.

DiGerolamo's book gives an overview of Italian culture and history with a bit of flare. From the story of Romulus and Remus to famous Italians, this quick read gives short snapshots of some of the most prominent aspects of Italian-ness. Throughout the book, they also offer helpful translations for words like “vespa” and recipes for simple italian foods including meatballs and pasta. Simultaneously flippant and educational, this book is a useful tool for anybody either planning on traveling to Italy or interested in Italian culture. Kudos to Tony Digerolamo for a job well done.

Honestly, as an Italian American, I found this to be a pretty decent overview of being Italian. It’s funny, and I like that DiGerolamo includes translations for the Italian words he uses. This book is essentially Spark Notes for Italy, with a bit more humor. It’s got your Italian history, food history and recipes, history of Italian immigration to the US, family, culture, famous Italians, mob history… it’s a comprehensive guide and interesting to boot. I’m especially fond of the section on explain Italians to non-Italians - it sounds just like my family. If you're looking for an overview of Italian history, food, and culture, then this book would be right for you.

This book is pretty funny, and I have to say very enlightening in a more interesting way. I’m Italian-American, lived in Italy for a brief moment, and then visited there 2 more times later in life and there is plenty in there I did not know or have ever heard of! Even with all those guidebooks and tours… There aren’t a lot of curse words all over the place either, so if you have a teenager that needs to learn more about their heritage this is a much more palatable way than giving them a history book. I would recommend this 10000% to read before going on a trip to Italy. I like to have the back history of the place I’m visiting but usually, those books are so incredibly dull. There is the bit on dating that I disagree with- the author says that the Italian woman says she doesn’t want drama and to play games but in reality wants both of those things. Um, it’s not 1982 guy. Take that crap out.

Funny very funny

It is a wonderful book. It is especially good for providing solid information to people who generally do not read books! Many topics of interest and real short chapters. All of the information is based on research not just someone's opinion which is so important. I bought 3 copies and gave them to my husband and adults sons, all sportsmen, for their birthdays! They love it! Before giving my husband his, I read several chapters that interested me and found the information very helpful and easy to understand. Clearly a winner!!

I really enjoyed learning more about various wildlife. However, at times the author was very redundant in explaining things. Also, he inserts several comments at an attempt for humor. I think some readers will like this and some will be annoyed by it.

Interesting reading for outdoors people especially hunters.

Excellent Book. Short, Enjoyable Articles On Nature From A Local Author. I Have Recommended It To Friends And Family. I Have Really Learned A Lot.

The Annapolis Book of Seamanship: Fourth Edition, by John Rousmaniere

Review

“The Annapolis Book of Seamanship is an essential book for every mariner, and a must-read reference for every seasoned or first-time sailor. I keep one copy at home and another on my boat. Every topic is easy to find, and the graphics and pictures are extremely helpful. John has had a remarkable career as a top small boat sailor, blue water racer, and adventure cruiser and is one of America's most acclaimed experts on safety at sea.” (Gary Jobson)“There is no other book as comprehensive or as readable as The Annapolis Book of Seamanship, and this 4th edition sets a new benchmark. Completely revised sections, including safety, heavy weather, electronics, health, emergencies and more, make the book more than 50% new. This is the one book that should be on every sailor’s bookshelf.” (Chris Caswell editor of CharterSavvy, author Greatest Sailing Stories Ever Told)“Since the first edition, The Annapolis Book of Seamanship has been the definitive source for sailing and seamanship. The new 4th edition brings this essential reference up to date with the latest in equipment and sailing technique. There is nothing else like it. Clear and concise, yet complete; The Annapolis Book of Seamanship covers this vast topic with a clarity in organization, language, and presentation to allow thorough understanding, and with enough depth and detail to provide real substance. This is the book I go to, and the one I recommend to sailors of every experience level.” (Bill Gladstone Director, North U, co-author The Instant Handbook of Boat Handling, Navigation, and Seamanship)

From the Author

New material in The Annapolis Book of Seamanship (page xi) The 4th edition of The Annapolis Book of Seamanship is an extensive update and development of its predecessors. One-third of the text is new, and so are many photos (almost all of Mark Smith's brilliant drawings remain). Through all this, the book's mission has not changed. The aim for 30 years has been to advise you the sailor on essential gear, skills, and attitudes that will enhance your pleasure and safety wherever you sail, in whichever boat you sail. Among the things haven't changed are that Chapters 1 and 2 continue to provide basic knowledge to help you get started, with much more detail in subsequent chapters. There are more "Hands On" sections with their tips and checklists. A continuing theme is that while modern equipment is a fine thing to have and use, some traditional skills and methods remain important. Equipment updates run throughout the book. The chapters on the boat, sails, rigging, and heavy weather include many new developments in gear and in methods, but the sections that have undergone the most change are the ones on electronic instruments and on safety. The early 21st century has seen the introduction of three GPS-enabled systems: locator beacons, the Automatic Identification System (AIS), and Digital Selective Calling (DSC), which is the backbone of the U.S. Coast Guard's Rescue 21 system that have transformed the ways in which we communicate on the water. The chapters on health, safety, heavy weather, and emergencies have been completely overhauled to take account of new knowledge about seasickness, hypothermia, fatigue, and other crucial health issues, along with new developments in planning for and managing emergencies and calling for assistance. This edition features a considerable amount of knowledge acquired from four sources with which I have been extensively engaged for many years. Many lessons have been learned in these reviews, and they are reported here. 1. On-water tests. I helped organize and wrote the report for the Crew Overboard Rescue Symposium, held on San Francisco Bay in 2005. This was a significant four days of testing a vast range of safety equipment and methods used in cruising and racing monohulls and multihulls, and in powerboats. Later, when safety concerns turned to sailing dinghies and other small boats, I participated in and wrote the report for tests of sailor retrieval, capsize recovery, and entrapment hold on Long Island Sound in 2012. 2. Hanson Medal reports. Nearly 200 sailors have been awarded the Arthur B. Hanson Rescue Medal by the Safety-at-Sea Committee of U.S. Sailing Association (U.S. Sailing). Each announcement contains a detailed report on the accident. I have served as coordinator of the Hanson Medal program and as a member of the Safety at Sea Committee for many years. 3. Safety seminars. Since speaking at one of the first large safety seminars, held at the U.S. Naval Academy in January 1980 (my subject was lessons learned from the 1979 Fastnet Race storm), I have moderated or spoken at more than 100 of these events, ranging across the country as well as in Canada and England. They include Safety at Sea seminars sponsored by U.S. Sailing, Cruising and Seamanship seminars sponsored by North U (the educational arm of North Sails), and Suddenly Alone and other yacht club safety training events. 4. Inquiries into incidents. I sailed in the stormy 1979 Fastnet Race and wrote a book, Fastnet, Force 10, about it. My later storm book, After the Storm, concerns accidents and their consequences in maritime history. More recently there have been highly detailed reports of inquiries into seven accidents: the fatal grounding of PriceWaterhouseCoopers off Australia (2009); the fatal capsize of a 420 dinghy at Annapolis, Md. (2011); the fatal capsize of WingNuts in a race on Lake Michigan (2011); the capsize of Rambler 100 off Ireland (2011); the fatal grounding of Low Speed Chase off San Francisco (2012); the fatal grounding of Aegean off San Diego (2012); and the evacuation of a sailor from Seabiscuit during the Newport Bermuda Race (2012). I wrote or co-authored the reports on the dinghy, Wingnuts, and Newport Bermuda Race incidents. All this should not be read to mean that there are more accidents today than in past maritime history. Rather, many sailors are working harder to learn from accidents - which is a good sign that the future may be healthier and safer for all of us who go to sea for pleasure and challenge. #20,036 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

A book that should be required reading for any boater. I didn't have any friends that could teach me how to sail and could not afford someone to teach me but believe it or not I learned (even thou through trial and error) how to sail just from the information in it. I'm not a race sailor but I've sailed the gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic so I guess one could say I'm an accomplished sailor.

This is the third purchase I have made over time of this book. My previous copies were dog eared and falling apart from usage. It is very well written and informative. It has been considered "the book" for learning sailing. I have been away from the sport for a long time, and got the book as a refresher. It has served me well from the time I was a Sea Scout through Maine Maritime Academy and beyond. A recommended read for anyone interested in Sailing from a novice to a seasoned sailor. I seem to learn something every time I read it.

Your book shelf has a hole in it if you don't have this title. It is a comprehensive book on the seamanship of mid-size sailing vessels. I say mid-size not to exclude larger and smaller boats. The book covers it all from some basic physics to fabrics. The only thing missing is getting wet. While there is some room for improvement, there isn't much room. If you take sailing seriously, you already have this one.

Great introductory book on sailing. My wife and I are looking to get into sailing, and it has a good, basic start to understanding sailing. The writing is clear, and explains sailing jargon clearly. The one downside is that the pictures in the book didn't print well, being too dark and therefore hard to see what is being demonstrated in the pics. Otherwise, we are satisfied with the wealth of information in the book!

I just got into sailing in the summer of 2014. This book has been indispensable in covering not only the basics, but many other more advanced topics that I've been curious to learn about. It will continue to be a solid reference point for me as I continue sailing in the coming years.

Definitely worth the read for the newer sailor. Not the first book you should read if you've never sailed, but once you know what a luffing sail means and the difference between a tack and a gybe you can start to appreciate a lot of what this book has to offer. It will help you understand how to take your sailing experience to a higher, more skilled level.

The price of the book was fairly expensive so the fact that my download did not include illustrations make this purchases totally worthless. It could be that The download went wrong. I would like to try again but as I’m offshore getting internet access is pretty sketchy. I have a hard copy of the book which is great. This without the illustrations. Not so much.

Bought it for my son, I had the first edition. Found it to be what I consider, the authoritative source for written information when learning to sail!
