Living and Sustaining a Creative Life: Essays by 40 Working Artists, by Sharon Louden

Review

“Extraordinary. . . . Louden has initiated a public discussion of how an artist can persist. It’s an essential question in a field that no one chooses for its assurance of financial rewards. In many ways, Louden’s book helps us to answer the question, ‘How does an artist make a living today?’ . . . Louden makes an important contribution to the discussion of how art is made now by the vast majority of artists at work. The book is a reality check prompting us to recall that invention doesn’t happen without determination. As these artists’ testimonies so vividly show, history, theory, and criticism are activities dependent ultimately on the hard-won production of art.” (Art Journal)“Contributions range from predictable to shocking, in-control and overwhelmed. Some artists have full-time jobs; many are parents. . . .[Louden is] telling it like it is.” (ARTnews)“A strikingly frank book that removes the veil of mysticism surrounding the artistic life.” (Hyperallergic)"Consisting of 40 essays, this book presents the realities of the creative life over time, as reported by practicing artists. The stories take the form of interviews, narratives, and statements, and convey in frank, authentic form the joys and challenges of being an artist....Aspiring artists and students will be inspired by these essays, and professionals will see themselves in many of the stories being told. Anyone considering a career in art can profit from reading this book. It also provides insight into the world of art as a commodity, and the challenges of balancing business, relationships, and the creative life....Highly recommended." (CHOICE)"Anyone serious about a career as an artist must read this book." (Adam Sheffer, partner, Cheim and Read Gallery)“Too often the story of how an artist makes art and a living is advertised as either a step into an abyss of debt and dementia or a glamorized Bohemia misunderstood by a general public. Yet what these artists demonstrate in this valuable book is that the common bond for us all who aspire to a well-lived life is blood, sweat, and tears. From artists living off sales of their work to those who teach and those who search for paychecks in odd jobs, the desire to create is never extinguished.” (Franklin Sirmans, Terri and Michael Smooke Curator, Los Angeles County Museum of Art)“From surprisingly frank sharings on the struggles of starting out as young artists to the challenges of making time and space for creation, the artists in Living and Sustaining a Creative Life share with candor and heart just what it takes to be an artist today." (Anne Pasternak, president and artistic director, Creative Time)“Sharon Louden has gathered together in this book an exceptionally diverse range of artists’ experiences in order to illustrate, in a manner otherwise inaccessible, the inherent tensions that artists face in constantly balancing their drive to devote core time and energy to creating new work and their wish to share that work with the world with the complexities, as well as the joys, of their personal and family lives.” (Michael Straus, chairman, Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts)“I applaud artist Sharon Louden for assembling this fascinating compilation of artist testimonies. It provides a refreshing, honest look at the myriad ways that artists shape and feed their lives and evolve authentic, generative practices in a society that does not always make it easy for artists to subsist and fully contribute. Living and Sustaining a Creative Life is thus an inspiring, unexpurgated resource for artists beginning their careers as well as any individual seeking to recalibrate his or her daily life to pursue a more purpose-filled existence.” (Olga Viso, executive director, Walker Art Center)"Louden’s collection offers valuable lessons on striking a balance between the need to make money and the need to make art; for if making art is the primary concern, making money becomes a means to an end―not the end itself. . . . Though written about the unique experience of fine artists, Living and Sustaining A Creative Life is worth the read by anyone seeking to build a life of artistic intention without ignoring the need for monetary sustenance." (Courtney M. McSwain, writer and storytelling consultant)

#76,209 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

As a professional artist, I was very taken with this refreshing book of essays about the practical side of making a living as a visual artist. My path of making a living as an artist has been as unique and unexpected as many of the stories represented in Louden's book, and I found myself feeling validated and supported. As in my experience, the book shows how serendipity, hard work, luck, talent, and building relationships play a part in developing the careers of artists. There are quite a few essays included, and each path and perspective shared was interesting in its own way. The editor, Sharon Louden, presented the pieces in a straightforward manner, forgoing too much opinionated commentary that can take away from the clarity of the material. In fact, my favorite thing about the book was how each author stuck to the topic (making a continuous living as a visual artist) without intellectual discourse. The mystery of creativity is a powerful and wonderful part of being an artist, but the day to day workings and the meanderings of a career are a thing of fascination, too. This book celebrated the functional side of art, presented by professionals who can instruct by honest experience rather than didacticism. It was at times funny, surprising, and triumphant. I recommend it to artists at the dawn of their possible careers or artists who've been at it for a lifetime.

There are many wonderful things about this book. Each artists chapter reveals the layers of what it means to balance life as an artist. The term working artist can mean many, many things. Defining what is a "working artist" is indeed one of the great intangibles of learning what it is to be an artist. The bottom line is we all figure it out and define it in different ways. Sharon's book illuminates the various ways artists define what it is to be and do and function as a working artist. The essays, most narrative in form, peel back the layers of daily life and work. They reveal the sometimes precarious balance that artists walk with their daily practice, their business and their personal lives. I wish I'd had this book when I was at NYU. It would have demystified the artistic world I so desperately wanted to be a part of. Now many years later I have figured out the daily ins and outs of what it means to move through life as an artist. But back in school this book would have been an invaluable tool in putting a creative life together bit by bit as it works for the individual. I say it should be required reading for art students of all disciplines. It's filled with insight that one only gets from experience. Its a rare gift to get an inside view of the path to come. I loved every page. Wonderful book.

As a non-practicing artist, only at the moment, this book has inspired me to dust off my talents and polish them a little. A fantastic read but it does not stop there. These artist actually exist, they are not dead yet, they are still practicing artists. You can look them up on the internet and contact them. Just reading about them and researching their work encouraged me enough. It has caused me to pull out one of my husband's books on business planning and now I'm on my way. Keeping in contact with other artists I studied with, and others I've met over the years are also a great encouragement and of the utmost importance. This book invoked again that passion that started it all in the beginning. The best book for artists who want to make a living out of their passion for the creative things in life. Highly recommended. The only book of its kind so far.

If you're an artist and expect to make a career out of it, you should read this book. You'll hear from 40 other artists how they balance business and art in order to sustain themselves and be happy. These essays paint a realistic panorama on what to expect while living as an artist and how to juggle it with the ever important mission of paying the bills and being able to continue making art.

This book tells real stories, in all their complexities, of how artists craft a life that leaves space and energy for their work, while still finding a way to make the financial aspects of it work. It is down to earth, pragmatic, and complex in the way real lives are. It makes it clear there is no simple formula. We all have to find our way, and a little luck along the way doesn't hurt, but may not happen. Well written, and an enjoyable read.

I would deem this as a must-read for up and coming artists or anyone who is considering art as a career especially. This collection of 40 artists' perspectives delves into the challenges and situations that artists face as they enter the business world. Each artist has a different background story, but there are a few common ideas that are shared among them. Another thing I like about it is the humbleness of the artists, not every artist started out making money, some are still concerned about finances. It is possible, however, to be an artist without remaining in serious debt as long as the principles mentioned are followed. I also felt that the stereotype that artists are "loners" or "recluses" is discussed and defeated in this collection of essays. In order to sell their art, artists must be social and network. There was a lot that I learned and plenty more to talk about after reading the book.

Malcolm Gladwell, a writer for the New Yorker (wonderful articles on NFL concussions and NYC rubber rooms in 2009), released this book in the fall of 2008. It spent a few months on the non-fiction best seller list. Gladwell explains that stories of success are usually much more complicated than people (or the media) often make them appear. He writes that the American arch-type of the self-made man is really a myth, and that a great deal of success is often the result of a mixture of time, parents, practice, opportunity and chance.(1) A brilliant point that he offers is that 14 of the 75 richest people in world history (translated into 2008 dollars) were Americans born in the 1830's. He cites that they had to be young enough to avoid the pre-civil War mind-set but old enough to take advantage of the opportunities that Wall Street, the railroads and industrial manufacturing provided between 1865 and 1880. This was one of his several examples about the importance of being born at the right time.(2) Gladwell explained how most of the European immigrants who ended up in NYC in the late 1800's and early 1900's did not have a skill or trade. The Jews that came from Eastern Europe usually had some experience with clothing; as a result, NYC was the world center of garment making during the first half of the 20th century, and the new businesses that sprung up and flourished were almost entirely owned and run by Jews. The children of garment workers (and owners) learned the importance of persuasion, hustle, shrewdness and long hours. Many garment workers' children became professionals, such as doctors and lawyers.(3) He forwards the "10,000" rule in chapter 2 and cites that the Beatles were on stage for about 10,000 hours in Hamburg, Germany, and that experience transformed them into a band that could play lots of songs in a variety of different styles. Bill Gates also had 10,000 hours of practice on a computer in the late 60's, and Mozart wrote music for about 10,000 hours before he started turning out his greatest work.(4) The Beatles were given the opportunity to play in Hamburg because of the relationship that a booking agent from Liverpool had with some Germans. Gates had access to a computer because of where he grew up (going to a rich school that was close to the University of Washington) and who he knew (a friend's parents got them 24 hour access to computers around Seattle). Chris Langan, an American with an IQ of 195, never had many opportunities, and so his brain was largely squandered (which Gladwell details in his chapter "The Trouble with Geniuses, Part I").(5) There is a huge amount of luck that runs through all of these pieces. Working at something for 10,000 hours is individually driven, but timing, parents and opportunity has nothing to do with being self-made.Gladwell writes in the same style as ESPN's Bill Simmons (whose latest book he wrote the intro for). He is easy to follow, he is funny and he uses a great deal of footnotes. The great flaw in Gladwell's work is that while his arguments and connections are interesting and make sense, they are not driven by research or that much hard data. He relies on anecdotal stories and hammering his points repeatedly. He rarely provides an opposing view to his points.

This is not just a good book. This is an important book. One of the first things I realized in reading this book by Malcolm Gladwell is that his position is diametrically opposite from that of Dr. Ben Carson, who through his campaign for the presidency stated that "poverty is a state of mind." Carson emphasized that despite all odds he was able to pull himself out of poverty and become a neurosurgeon and accomplish the things he did.Gladwell's book states early that success doesn't happen in a vacuum. It isn't based on intelligence, but on a variety of factors, and he uses multiple examples to demonstrate that we as a nation could have many more successful people in our country if we were to accept that it takes a village to make successes out of our children. In fact, he shows that hard work and opportunity in almost all cases are more important than intelligence. One story tells of the Canadian hockey league and the fascinating statistic that the vast majority of all successful hockey players are born in January, February or March. Why? Because the cutoff date for signing children is January 1, and those born in the first three months have a distinct advantage in age, experience and size in relation to those they play against. That same cutoff date is used by other countries, such as the Czech Republic, for not only hockey but soccer as well, which means that children born in the later part of the year consistently are overlooked when it comes to team sports. It's a built-in bias. These biases are all around us, and determine who succeeds or fails, constantly. In addition, the bias of a culture has a significant effect on how well a student does. Gladwell talks about the belief that Asians are better at math, which he shows is because their languages are more number-friendly, leading children to count earlier, and which make math simpler. In addition, he shows the inherent tradition of hard work of southern China had resulted in a work ethic for their descendants that continues today. Many of the stories are supported with statistics. One of the most eye-opening to me was his observation of the impact on summer vacation. Statistics show that the amount that lower-, middle-, and upper-class students learn in elementary school each year isn't that significantly different. But when you compare what they learn or forget over summer vacation, there is a significant discrepancy. Upper-class parents keep their children busy with lessons and classes all summer, while in most situations lower and even middle-class students don't do much during the summer and often forget much of what they have learned the previous year. As the summers add up, the problem compounds. And so the difference between upper, middle and lower class widens. The book is significant, easy to read, and extremely thought provoking. I highly recommend it.

Review

"The Modern Thai House features twenty-five houses selected by Robert Powell. Mainly designed by young architects in Bangkok and Chiangmai, these have been created in the last five years. I am impressed by the freshness and diversity of these contemporary works. There is an enjoyable consistency in the way that the lush vegetation, pools of water and often magnificent views weave through and around the architecture. The photography in this impressive book captures these qualities beautifully. This volume is an intelligent reminder of the importance that the design of the family house plays in the career of an architect. In many ways to design a good home is the ultimate architectural challenge." —Norman Foster, Baron Foster of Thames Bank, owner Foster + Partners

“I remember when wine connoisseurs couldn’t be in the same room with a bottle of rosé. Now rosé is not only acceptable -- it’s hip! Rosé deserves it’s own book, especially one written with such style, a book that can be enjoyed by beginner and professional alike.” (Kermit Lynch, author of ADVENTURES ON THE WINE ROUTE and owner of Kermit Lynch Wine Merchant)“James gives us a long-overdue book on rosé...Well done.” (Ed McCarthy, author of the WINE FOR DUMMIES series)“James captures the twists and turns, highs and lows and sheer accidents that led to rosé‘s place in the world today. The book is studded with morsels that will delight both the everyday drinker and the career sommelier...You’ll never look at pink wine the same again!” (Leiti Hsu, show host, WORD OF MOUTH, Writer, Town & Country)“Wine wunderkind Victoria James takes readers through a refreshing and delightful journey through all the delights of drinking pink. A long-overdue book on rosé... Well done.” (Bianca Bosker, author of CORK DORK)“Written by sommelier Victoria James with beautiful illustrations by Lyle Railsback, Drink Pink covers the history, process of making, and cultural appeal of rosé — and argues that drinkers should enjoy it all year round (we’re in).” (Bust.com)“James, the sommelier at Piora in New York, offers a crisp introduction . . . The book is studded with illustrations by Lyle Railsback...a gifted artist.” (The Street)“In her new book...James celebrates the revival of critical and consumer interest in these wines — leaving the dark days of inexpensive and over-sweetened brands like Lancers, and the white zinfandel apocalypse of the 80s, far behind . . . You’ll learn all the essentials.” (Forbes.com)“Ramp up your rosé IQ.” (Food & Wine)“Especially with Lyle Railsback’s pretty illustrations, sommelier Victoria James’s charming book is as enticing as the drink that inspired it.” ( Coastal Living’s 50 Best Books for the Beach This Summer)“Nothing is more liberating than relaxing into what you love without so much as a care as to what others may think. That’s the gist behind James’ unabashed elation for rosé and her rationalization as to why it deserves a heck of a lot more respect than it gets.” (Leite’s Culinaria)

What a fantastic book! This is the PERFECT gift for anyone who loves wine, pink, or cute, sweet books for their shelves! Also, perfect for those who really want to learn more about an often overlooked type of wine. Definitely go buy this for all your friends and family!!I've never given too much thought to rose wine before, until I picked this book up! I learned so much and had to go out and find some of her recommendations to drink. I love Victoria James' style of writing, her voice, and how knowledgeable she is while at the same time making it easy for someone like me to understand! I also adored the illustrations--so cute and funny!

Victoria's has such a fun writing style and I am loving it so far. The illustrations are fun and quirky! I am a huge lover of rosé but admit I never really knew anything about it - thanks to Victoria, that has now changed! Also, I had never thought to use rosé in recipes, but am now going to stock up on some bottles so I can try them all... who would've thought that rosé soup was a thing? Hoping to make it soon! Thanks Victoria!!!

This is a little trifle of a book, perfect for a wine enthusiast with just enough knowledge to be dangerous. There are some fascinating tidbits about the history of Rose here and Victoria James' voice is perfect in this blushing ode to our favorite pink drink. The recipes seem tacked on, but the body of the book is worth the price of admission.

I love to learn about wine and I love rosé. Good news - this book is those two things married together in a fascinating and funny read. The illustrations are beautiful and I love the recipes in the back. There are so many good ways to cook with rosé, I can't wait to try a number of them!

Fantastic Book! Unpretentious and informative. Shows the versatility of rose wine and provides yummy cocktail and food recipes. The illustrations are a surprising and welcome addition to this wonderful book!

Somewhat limited but worth owning. I like the recipes.

LOVE this book! bought one for a thank you gift and one for me :) Great way to learn about Rose' wines and great writing, not dry at all for an informational book! Highly recommend.

“Drink Pink” author Victoria James. This book is subtitled “a celebration” and that’s quite precisely the impression it left with me. I had been eagerly awaiting its release, having previously read brilliant magazine articles by this author, and had preordered my copy of “Drink Pink” long before the publication date. Once it was finally published and in my hands I devoured it in about two hours. It completely held me enthralled even though I myself (full disclosure), am a complete teetotaler, and have no knowledge of alcohol. “Drink Pink” is not intended as a heavy studious tome on oenology, (It is not supposed to be solid wine literature.) This little book is, instead, an affectionate tribute to one particular wine, the often overlooked rose wine. The author mentions that she purposely did not include “complicated French classifications put in place during the 1800’s or rules governing vineyard management”. The biography at the back of the book lists the author’s considerable experience, ace skills and impressive achievements, all of which renders her indeed amply qualified to competently discuss any aspect of viticulture. That, however, is not the purpose of this particular book. She is instead sharing joy. “This is what wine is about, pleasure and simplicity”, is how she encapsulates it. This is a sommelier who simply loves her craft and has kept her joy undiminished, even during the toil and grind that can sometimes cause other sommeliers to burn out. An "Ode To Joy" comes to mind. The toil is no small matter. The life of a sommelier involves studying exhaustively and continuously. Having once watched a documentary on the world of wine and sommeliers (quite knackered, tasting up to one hundred wines a day and describing each one meticulously), I came away from the film with the impression of toil, joyless, labourious and arduous toil. What a pleasure it was instead then, to see in this book that there is magic and joy to be found. Not to mention some jolly good recipes as well.Rose wine is finally given its “fair do’s” as the expression goes, in this delightful book, and one can only hope that this is just the first of many more books from this author. Her word choice is lighthearted and informal (“stuff” is used frequently for instance), and therefore embracing to all walks of life, regardless of one’s knowledge (or lack of knowledge about wine). The author uses some affectionate terms, “our little grape friends” and also terms that convey her opinion of poor quality rose wine (“pink bathwater” or ‘pink swill”). Wine is most often described as delicious in flavour, but sometimes certain wines can be great magic or they might be soulless, and a rubbish wine she bluntly labels as “a disaster”. Certain grapes can be “fun grapes” apparently, unbeknownst to me. If one is hewing to tradition they might be said to be “kicking it old school” among other whimsical terms used here. She has a particular affection for the South of France, describing it as a beautiful place and encouraging her readers to “Let a glass of wine transport you there, and as often as possible.”Different chapters in the book describe the history of rose wine, how it is made, as well as the locations of “where the good stuff grows”. I was surprised to learn that American is second, after France, in drinking the most rose wine. Nor had I realized that the pigment colouring of wine comes from the skin of the grape, not its pulp.Perhaps my only one small quibble with this book was that although a great deal of wine terminology was (thankfully!) explained for the layman, (Skittle bottle, Gris style, stuck fermentation, an NV bottle, chef de cave, terroir, “Bleeding off the wine”, oxidized, petillant, Indigenous yeast versus manufactured yeast), unfortunately a few other wine related terms in this otherwise layman-friendly book were not. I had to look up petanque court, yannin, and phenolic ripening and I still remain rather mystified about exactly what is meant when a wine has “an overwhelming wild note.”Recipes are also featured in this book, including dishes that pair well with rose wine or are cooked with rose wine. Although I’m by no means a foodie, the recipes were intriguing to me. Octopus is an integral ingredient in one recipe. You are to use over three pounds of it, and one must be most careful to use mostly the tentacles. Another recipe ,if you don’t fancy octopus, features hay roasted lamb, cooked whilst ensconced in the centre of a nest of, yes, hay.The smashing illustrations fit the lighthearted tone of this book beautifully, quirky and full of whimsy. They range from great pen and ink portraits of various individuals, including Ernest Hemingway, to delightful watercolour maps. (Really great maps!) I particularly loved the watercolour of a lemon next to a chicken. Perhaps the most comical was a humorous depiction of a wonky bed bug (painted as, well, as a bug in a bed). This insect was pivotal to the plot though, since he kept one individual awake who then came up with industry-changing ideas in the middle of the night. Other witty designs featured an octopus with a wine glass and a salmon with a cigar. The illustrator also painted one simple Granny Smith apple, found on page 33, that I found really impressive. This author brings particular individuals across the globe vividly to life as well. In one case a particularly spry pensioner is described, ”ninety-nine years old and still a firecracker, as are her wines.” On another page we meet a Corsican vineyard owner, a chap who will blast Corsican polyphonic songs through the vineyard because, as he explained,” it keeps the vines happy.”This was a delightful book, full of joie de vivre, that I heartily recommend to especially the layman and those interested in discovering an often overlooked treasure, rose wine.
