Brown begins this book reminding us how much singing is found in the Bible. Then he goes into the power of music in reflecting and shaping culture. He writes of his own personal experiences with secular music. He says of a Jimi Hendrix concert for example, “You didn't just listen to their music, you experienced it.” (p.2) He also writes of studies of music and the brain.Brown includes much about secular music, such as rock music, protest music in the Viet Nam war era, the civil rights era, rock and roll, heavy metal, punk, and rap. He writes about the spiritual and sexual side of that music too. I read lots more about bands and individual musicians in those areas than I ever wanted to. In fact, I skimmed over much of that information because it was mostly information I was not at all interested in. There is much about the power of music in this book but not the power and the music I want to know about.Brown spends a great deal of time proving the power of music using secular music. He argues periodically that if Christians want to get a message out to society, that message needs to be put to music. (p. 119) A little over half way through the book, he returns to the importance of music in the Bible and Jewish tradition.Brown wants to see music used more powerfully in the church such as in worship services. He also desires songwriters use their work as a prophetic force.This is, perhaps, a book for those in the church who are musically or lyrically gifted. Brown urges them to write songs that will shake society, captivate hearts and impact souls. (p. 164) He is convinced God wants to use music as a part of a holy revolutionary movement. (p. 166) He gives suggestions for laypeople, ministers, and worship leaders, musicians and songwriters.I received a complimentary egalley of this book from the publisher. My comments are an independent and honest review.

The last two chapters is what I expected the whole book to be like. But after reading those last two chapters I can see why the author choose to wade through all the genres of music and how it has impacted society. So I am glad I didn’t stop reading too soon.The author does an excellent job of showing the reader how different genres have effected society, and often times, negatively. He challenged the reader, especially if you are a songwriter and/or worship leader to focus on having that same impact for the Church.I have never called myself a songwriter, but I have written many songs, but only a few for the Church, most are for my students. Why? I think I am afraid that they will be silly, that they will lack depth. But if my source is Jesus and the Word how could that ever be so?The author has definitely stirred something up in me and challenged me to try to write some songs for the Church, songs with depth and good theology. Although, as a worship leader I do always strive for that in the songs that I pick each Sunday.I think anyone who enjoys music and would enjoy a walk through history in the music world would benefit from this book.A copy of this book was given to me. Brown brings to readers an intense study of how music is important to the mind, body and soul.Everyone has a favorite song. One that brings you joy, memories, excitement, etc.; we all have one. Music is such a prevalent part of our society that even waiting on hold requires music to be played to entertain us. We are beings created with the ability to appreciate and celebrate music and use it to either enrich or escape from our lives. We use it as a way to paint a picture of what is good, wonderful and pleasing in our lives or to illustrate what is wrong or needs to be changed. Music has started and supported revolutions for years and it has given voice to people who otherwise were not being heard. These are some of the main points of Dr. Brown’s interesting book on music in our society. I enjoyed reading this walk through history and how music was able to shape events. How easily we forget the battle cry of historical events, but almost never the songs those times produced. I learned a long time ago that music was important in my own life. As a child, I would have trouble with math concepts and my mom purchased tapes to help me learn. I learned my multiplication and division tables to rap music and still recall those songs when I am faced with a numbers problem. Certain songs became the embodiment of my life at times and gave me an outlet for anger, pain, joy or celebration. This is the same for others, according to Dr. Brown, and has even set the tone for societal and historical events. People can find unity in music that no other medium allows. But a tool this powerful should be used with caution. As the above description says “Music can either connect you to God or drive you to the Devil”. I agree with Dr. Brown as I see the divergence of music better now that I am an adult. The most popular songs on radio or social media today are definitely driving (or hurtling) people in the direction of the Devil and his purposes. What used to be only intimated by a song is now blatantly and explicitly belted out. I am thankful that there has been an abundance of good Christian music that has been released in the past 10 years and I’m hopeful that others will soon follow. I also agree with Dr. Brown that we need more songs that get to the heart of people’s problems with the same directness that popular music exhibits. And even though I am a consumer of music rather than a publisher or writer, I do think it is my job as a Christian to help promote and spread the message of Hope that is so desperately needed in our world. As a children’s choir teacher, I am so pleased to see the uplifting and incredible songs that the children at our church are learning. Hillsong’s “Who You Say I Am” sounds even more amazing when sung by exuberant little voices yell-singing out “….I’m a child of God! Yes, I am!” This is the incredible truth that needs to be heard by so many hurting, broken people and this is what Dr. Brown is illustrating in his book. What if instead of pre-teen and teenagers knowing every disgusting lyric to Ariana Grande’s or Taylor Swift’s latest hit, they had Chris Tomin’s “Jesus” or Kari Jobe’s “I Am Not Alone” memorized? What if teen and young adults looking for a rap or rock outlet found that in Kirk Franklin, Toby Mac, Capital Kings, Skillet, Kutless, or Thousand Foot Crutch? It would revolutionize the society we live into a more positive and God-fearing outlook. Music is powerful in its multitudinous abilities and we have to be very careful which forms we allow into our homes, minds and lives. Dr. Brown’s research of this topic was wonderful and while sometimes a bit beyond my understanding because of generation gap, I did learn a lot about the effects of music in the 60s, 70s and 80s. The themes have carried far beyond those times and have become ingrained into many people’s thought processes today. I also liked his little additional stories entitled “Vignettes” that ended the chapters and gave further context or understanding. They made the chapter a little more personal and I identified with several of them. I will certainly recommend this book to others as I think more people need to understand the deep impact music does and can have on our lives.I received an ARC of this book from Charisma House in exchange for a fair and honest review. I am giving the Kindle edition of this book only two stars, not for any deficiency in content nor for a lack of historical or literary value, but because there are so many typos that many sentences require reference back to the printed book to understand what the writer actually wrote. It appears that the publisher of this work simply scanned printed pages and then processed the output of the scans through an elementary OCR without benefit of a spelling checker nor any grammar analysis. We shouldn't have to pay good money for inferior products such as this.

The five stars are for the translator. Josephus is what he is: a first century Jew, soldier, historian, and opportunist. Without him we have virtually no record of the first thirty years of the Church, or the lead-up, execution, and clean-up of the Jewish rebellion against Rome, the most horrendous experience any nation, before or since, says the author - the worst possible war. There are stories of those who wanted to placate Rome to save lives and treasure; those who wanted to kill all Romans; horrible Jewish crime bosses who butchered the innocent; women eating their children within the walls of Jotapata while Roman siege-works (broken only by the bald heroism and brilliance of the author, so he says), starved thousands; breaking down Jerusalem's walls and Romans becoming sick at seeing what Jews had done to Jews, with blood running in high rivers down the alleys. After reading this book, you will understand why so many have identified the Beast of Revelation with Nero. You'll read the primary source for the famous mass suicide at the top of Masada. A 7 year war. A great tribulation. Many fulfilled New Testament prophecies within their own generation. If you're a Preterist, it's evidence that the premils could be mistaken. If you're a premil, you may have some explaining to do. Although Josephus exaggerates and clearly sucks up to Rome, The Jewish War is a must-read for any Bible student or church historian. The problem has been that forever, it seems, Whiston was the only translation of the book, and I'm guessing that's why so few people read it. Even if forced to read it for school credit, it made you want to cut your wrists. I discovered Williamson's translation in a bruised book store by accident a few years ago, and suddenly the book was a page-turner; I couldn't put it down. I missed meals. Then I was happy to find it on Kindle. You can get Whiston on Kindle too, but I see no reason to. Now, with Williamson's touch, The Jewish War is readable again, so there should be no excuse for missing this treasure!

This is a great book, but the Kindle version is awful. It looks like they did an OCR of the print version and then did no quality checking. At one point, it refers to the "great dungs" in the temple. The word "die" comes out as "the" almost every single time. As in "they were prepared to the." It's readable, but it takes some effort.

The book is a fantastic historical account of the Jewish struggle against The Roman Empire. It is my second time to read it . The first time was several years ago. I have enjoyed it more this time around

This was recommended to me during the height of the turmoil in Lebannon in the late 70's, early 80's, by a friend who lived parttime in Beirut. He'd said it would do a great deal to explain the antagonism and tension between Israel and the Palestinians and Arabs. And, it did! Fascinating to read. BTW, this was a replacement for me, since I'd loaned my first copy to someone and they liked it so well that they kept it!

Josephus was one of the greatest Jewish historians of all time. He tells the true story. The numbers used and the casuality figures are greatly exaggerated. In fact the numbers are in the range of one to ten in scope. However, the rich history and detail is amazing.It is what really happened in Jerusalem and surrounding area in the Roman war agains the Jews in 70ad.

Great insight into the political and religious infighting that was occurring in what today we call, "the Holy Land" during the time of Christ. A must read for any student of the Bible that wants to understand the vast and complex stage upon which the characters in the New Testament perform.

Highly recommended to understand the current crises of the middle east and prophecy of the biblical book of Revelation.Jocephus was a soldier and historian after the fact. He does a good job in keeping as neutral as one could at that time and to his credit by the survival and popularity of his writings at that time and even to this day. A must read by any student of biblical history.

Geoff John's 2011 relaunch of the Justice League was inspired. The first volume of this series was outstanding. He was not able to keep up the standard in this second volume. The dialogue is fine, but the main villain leaves a bit to be desired. It is also set 5 years after the first book (without explaining that 5 years have past). Despite working together for five years, they still don't know each others' identities and they don't work as brilliantly together as one would expect. The artwork is typical Jim Lee: curvy and colorful with big splash pages. Overall, I enjoyed it, but I was disappointed that it was not as good as volume 1.

You ever hear of that theory of driving behind a semi truck? Supposedly the drift from the truck helps propel your car forward and thus saves you some gas money. I don't know, it's science or something. My point is: JL Vol. 2 is a book that certainly "drifts" behind the big and awesome JL Vol. 1. The first volume titled "Origin" hits the ground running and doesn't stop. This second volume feels like it's running off the momentum from the first book. I'm not saying this book is bad (after all I gave it four stars), but the action and pacing does seem to take a dip compared to the previous collected edition. None the less, I enjoyed this book and I'm really loving the New 52 Justice League series as a whole. Geoff Johns is a great writer and Jim Lee is one of the best artists out there. You should read this.

THIS REVIEW CONTAINS SPOILERS: I found this to be an interesting and worthwhile read. It was an excellent way to tell the story of a newer Justice League just learning about the inevitable consequences of their actions. The story also does a good job of explaining the outlook of the team by tye people of the world. The general public believe the Justice League should overthrow the government, and the government is naturally afraid of the power and influence they have. Paired with this theme, we get the bridge between all of these people and the league in Steve Trevor. I found the way he was handled to be exceptional. He cared very much about protecting the league, but was also very troubled due to his love for Wonder Woman.Now let's get into the stuff we all will buy this trade for: the Justice League themselves. The League has always been my favorite comic book team, and this book only furthers my admiration for them. You see all the personal connections a lot of the members have, and it proves to be a lot of fun. One of my favorite examples was between the Flash and Green Lantern. They go off together to interrogate an enemy, and the Flash asks to be bad cop. Hal reluctantly ends up agreeing, and Barry proves why Hal was so reluctant.Eventually though, we learn they're not all as close to each other. This all comes to play due to the villain of this story; David Graves. David Graves was formally an author who wrote a book praising the League, even calling them gods. After he and his family get stricken with an unknown disease, of which ends up killing his family, he comes to the conclusion that everything he once believed about them was wrong. He ends up becoming bent on humanizing the League, eventually finding out everything he can about them. He reveals Batman's distrust of the team, (which we find out excludes Superman) and that Superman is a reporter. He ends up kidnapping Steve Trevor after a fight with the League, and the we're brought to an ancient temple with what seems to be souls of people close to each member of the League. Graves believes these to be the souls of the people who the inhabitants of earth. The League ends up finding this to be untrue, due to Steve Trevor revealing he wasn't killed, despite Wonder Woman apparently seeing his ghost. This leads to the League releasing Graves from the souls he believed to be his family.The story concludes with Hal deciding to quit the League, after a discussion of how the League has failed Graves, ending the trade on a bit of a cliffhanger.All and all, I'd say this was a very enjoyable read, and I'd recommend it to any DC fan who has already read the first volume.

Just finished JL Vol 2. It was ok filled in some backstory's. it did introduce Green Arrow to the mix and added to the Pandora story which needed to be done shes a tie in to so many books we need as much time on her as we can get. I did like the villain Graves. I didn't really like this vol as much as the first but i did like it enough to order the 3rd. this is a book im going to stay with till the end. I really like these JL story's because they focus on all members back story's and make you want to read the other new 52 vol on each one. It really helps that the writers include back story's and time on each JL member through out these volumes it makes it easy for the readers even if you don't read each members stand alone comic. I for one only read the baman titles and just stared reading the suicide squad and im not lost at all granite I do know enough about superman and flash but really have never read anything on wonder women, arrow or aquaman. I will stay with this comic and slowing branch out and read each ones stand alone comic.

This is definitely a good follow-up to The New 52’s first story for The Justice League. It’s filled with emotions, and it’s one of those stories that really makes you think and feel. I was a little bit surprised when Superman and Wonder Woman kissed, but I heard that in some of the stories for DC they become a couple. I think that a lot of us pictured Superman with Lois Lane, and Wonder Woman with Steve Trevor or Batman. So, some people may not like this new relationship, but they’re going to have to get used to it. WE’RE going to have to get used to it. Overall; this is a pretty great story.
