I'm an 11th grader and I was assigned a term paper that has to be 5-7 pages long. And I'm doing it on the Mexican American war and truly this book is the best you can buy. Like I bought so many books on the Mexican American and by far this Is the best one. So simple and straight to the point, it's truly perfect.

Great basic facts about the war. Really enjoyed it. Told me all I needed to know in a short condensed version.

Very interesting and learned a lot from this paperback. I've never been very interested in history but this was a quick way to learn about the Mexican-American War.

I'm always on the lookout for engaging books to use with my history curriculum. Sometimes it's hard to find a good book that's affordable, covers a topic with enough depth and yet isn't something a student has to "slog" through. Non-fiction can be especially challenging because I have fairly high standards. Each book has to be something my student is going to connect to (unless there really isn't anything else to choose from and it's a topic I want to cover!).I recently was on the lookout for a book on the Mexican-American War - a conflict that still has some present day repercussions and one that I think is generally ignored in most history programs but shouldn't be! Living Through the Mexican-American War by John DiConsiglio does a great job of presenting this conflict as well as other related stories covering the years 1821-1849. The book itself is colorful and has a nice layout. There is a mix of maps, photos, illustrations and colored sidebars that bring some visual interest to the pages. I like the added touch of the "burnt/worn" edges look on each page. It's details like this that set this particular book above the rest I've looked at for this topic.Even though it's 80 pages long, Living Through the Mexican-American War is a fairly quick read that shouldn't take your students more than a day or two to finish. Or, if you prefer to use it as a read-aloud, you can easily get through it in a week.All throughout the book more difficult words and terms are presented in bold and defined via a glossary in the back. Here are a few examples: Whig Party Manifest Destiny sovereign chaparral fortified adobe guerrilla dysenteryIf you like to combine assignments, it would be super-easy to pick out words your student isn't familiar with and assign them for vocabulary study.Based on the vocabulary and the writing style, I'd say this book targets the upper elementary to middle school age bracket, although I think it's perfectly appropriate for high schoolers as well. Even I learned a thing or two after reading it and it's written/presented in such a way that I think most students will retain most of it.There is also a small "Find Out More" section in the back with a list of books, websites and DVD's to explore, if interested.I feel the book does a good job at presenting both sides of the Mexican-American War. It gives you a great understanding of the circumstances surrounding it from various perspectives and not only gives an overview of incidents like the Battle of the Alamo but various sections cover some of the people involved and topics like weaponry and hardships. There is even a section about Sarah Borginnis "The Heroine of Fort Brown" so girls don't have to feel too left out amidst all the battle-talk.The Mexican-American War happened because of a variety of factors and if affected different people in a variety of ways. Living Through the Mexican-American War doesn't shy away from these topics and yet covers them in an age-appropriate way. Portions of the book cover various interesting facts about things like yellow fever, deserters, Irish immigrants, the Donner Party and more. It's written in a way that shows your students how all of these different things were connected. I like that.After reading through the book I've decided it's a winner! It's an excellent resource that should help any student learn about this important part of our nation's history.*Note: I received this book for free through Netgalley. How surprised I was, reading my first book by Francine Rivers. I didn’t expect a book about faith in Jesus Christ. A book about early Christianity. I followed all the characters easily and almost felt like I was hovering overhead watching what was unfolding. I read the book along with the narrative. I love how he read it, but I did speed it up to 1.25 as the book got more and more exciting, I couldn’t wait to get to the next chapter to see what would happen next. I really enjoyed this book and right now I’m going to start the next in the series!

Francine is one of my favorite authors. She has the ability to draw me and make me feel like I am IN the story.This book, in particular, is my very favorite. Such a deep, thought provoking story that leaves you breathless (literally). It is NOT recommended that you finish this book without the second one readily available.A classic book I will read again and again for the rest of my life!

I sensed a faint presence of an all-knowing, all-present God in the midst of the multi-faced evils of the great deceiver. It was a-bit draining to spend much of this first episode with Julia (and her selfish-loves), Marcus, their parents, and Attretus, all 'faithful' followers of other gods. So much time and story line was spent on these characters that I wondered if Haddasah would ever have support in her faith. The climax left me wondering, 'Is this the end of the faithful servant Haddasah!' I guess I'll have to find out in the sequel.

This book series has blessed my life for so many years now. I have read all 3 at least a dozen times, and each time I glean something new and moving. Francine Rivers is an outstanding author, who truly does her research and takes time choosing her words. The moments occurring in this story are hard to read in the most beautiful way; they pain the heart with truth and reality, moving you deeply over and over again. The characters are so beautifully real, I feel I know them very personally. I recommend this book to male or female, Christian or not. My one warning is that there is most definitely mature historical content, so be cautious for younger readers.But then when your grow a little older- read it!

This was a very enjoyable book, and I look forward to reading the next two in the series. I've learned so much about Roman society and gladiators. The research into everyday life, from what their homes looked like to what they ate, made the story come alive. I was especially interested in what the arena games were all about. I learned how gladiators trained, what their weapons and attire were called and the types of gladiators that fought. At times, when the book seemed brutal, I had to remember how brutal these historical times were. Life was cheap entertainment for the masses if you were a slave or a prisoner. Through the book, I loved seeing what life might have been like for a survivor of the Roman invasion of Jerusalem - in particular, a Christian Jew.. What the character Hadassah endures, might very well have happened. Her faith sees her through many trials. We learn what faithfulness and long suffering are all about by watching her. She is indeed the humble heroine of this novel.

Excellent book! This book takes you right back to the center of history shortly after the resurrection of Christ. Rivers puts bible history in a context that you visualize and remember. It makes it fun to read the bible. When you sit down to read Paul's letters for example, where he warns about the temples and the false gods, Rivers has taken you on a journey through the temples in several cities and you witness the destruction of many lives of those who believe in these false gods, so you understand what Paul is talking about. You have a better bite of history to grasp what he is teaching you.And Hadassah, if we could all be like her, trusting God, even in the hard times. I love the example Rivers has given us here, not throwing Christianity in the reader's face, but perfectly illustrating who Christ is. Rivers gives us a lovely character in Hadassah. She quietly faces all that comes at her: death, life, persecution, illness, even love, with a bold strength. Knowing she is covered by the blood of Christ and she is never alone.If you are looking for a way to get excited about reading the bible, Rivers presents a visual launching pad. A Voice in The Wind, is set in a very bloody time period, so this book is not meant for the squeamish. However, Rivers does historical fiction with class; telling the story without dwelling on the violence.But the reason you read this story is because of a little girl named Hadassah. She vaults herself beyond it all. It is because of Hadassah that I recommend this book to all. You will read this book more than once. Read it. Allow it to inspire you as it did me. And buy it for someone else to enjoy. May we all be able to have the faith and strength of Hadassah in the world ahead.

Even as the brutality and depravity of men and women come alive in description, so does the very real meaning of belief in Christ and acceptance of divine will. This book does not preach. It lets the reader interpret as they wish.

A beautifully haunting story of a young woman's spiritual growth and journey. If you are an unbeliever than you will have a hard time understanding the teachings and the beauty of the story. God does not allow us to go through hardtimes without a reason. Hadassah is proof that everything happens in God's timing. This story does parallel Ancient Rome with modern society and that is simply because history does repeat itself. America needs to wake up and turn back to the word of God. There are 3 books in this series and after reading book 1 you will want to immediately read the second book.

About the Author

Laura Bell’s work has been published in several collections, and from the Wyoming Arts Council she has received two literature fellowships as well as the Neltje Blanchan Memorial Award and the Frank Nelson Doubleday Memorial Award. She lives in Cody, Wyoming, and since 2000 has worked there for the Nature Conservancy.

A good memoir but does she really get a grip on her life or does she have the courage to tell it all? I think not. Give Ms. Bell credit for her desire for independence, her life style and her wanting to write about it...and she writes well with phrases and paragraphs I reread with pleasure. Many of us search for what she wanted and like her find it (or it finds us) but cannot muster up the effort to write about it. What is unsettled in this memoir, from my point of view, is that while she goes after a life of independence in Wyoming and secures it one way or another, she does not resolve many of her deeply felt personal issues, especially her relationship with men, and is unwilling or unable to add that facet to her tale. She hints at an abortion, at affairs, at attachments but never tells the whole or true story or the details, leaving the impression with the reader that she hasn't explored them profoundly enough to talk about them in a way that will bring some closure. Too bad. LASTLY, this is book that NEEDS an accompanying map to help the reader follow her around her in ramblings...how could she and her editor miss this. Google maps or cover maps are not enough.

In general, I liked this book. I thought it was an honest, insightful, thought provoking look at the author's life. However, the lack of continuity was very distracting to me. The author constantly jumped from one time period to another with no warning, not only from chapter to chapter but from paragraph to paragraph. I found myself frequently stopping to ask, OK, now when was/is this? Because of this, I found the reading stressful rather than relaxing. I really felt I should give it 3 stars but I'm not a very qualified critic so perhaps this wouldn't bother someone else and it was basically a good book, I thought.

I first heard of Laura's book thru a book review. One of the lines quoted from Laura's book caught my attention where she described Wyoming...."And how, when you're used to sheltering hardwoods and rolling hills, the bare-bones immensity of Wyoming can make you feel like a sacrifice left on a slab for the gods to pick clean." Having moved from back east to Wy.over 18 years ago, I felt that she captured my own feeling for this place. Its a place to be experienced not just seen, and she captures the humbling sense of a wild, rugged land that presents all of its beauty and dares you to stay. One of the first things I noticed about Wy. was the women, single women who had moved here, miles from a shopping center, and claimed it as there own. I was one of those women, so I can appreciate Laura's journey. I also knew some of the people mentioned in the book so it made it even more interesting for me to read. I loved her writing style. She says more in one sentence than most can say in a paragraph! If you've ever thought of stepping outside your comfort zone pick up this book and journey with her, you won't be disappointed.

This was a slow go at first. The first half of the book wasn't all that interesting. Lots and lots of descriptions about scenery. Too much description and nothing much else happening. I halfway wanted to quit reading it (listening to it actually on Audible) but I'm one of those people who hates to quit reading a book I've already started so I plugged on. Around the midway mark it finally started to become more interesting when she began to go into more details about her life. I did finish it. I really can't say I'd recommend it to anyone though.

It was a little difficult to get into the book at first due to the writer's style of narration, but I discovered it was a book that required a "slow down" speed, thus I was able to savor each story. Didn't want the book to end. Loved it so much I sent a book to my sister to read. This is a keeper - I plan to read again and again.

Second time reading Claiming Ground and it was even better than first time. If you enjoy the journey, struggles and success of a real life women then you will not be able to put this book down .I smiled and cried and celebrated the author's successes and fears. Then there was the man thing. As if we/I can't identify....Only one issue, Laura please continue your story. I so look forward to another.Thank you.

What a lovely memoir. Her writing reminded me of other musings from the wide open spaces (Molly Gloss, Theresa Jordan, and Judy Blunt), yet having its own pathway. Threaded in with the descriptions of her manyvaried experiences as a ranch hand in the West, is the poignant unfolding of a bittersweet story of love, longing, and loss. I thoroughly enjoyed it and immediately passed it along to others I kbew would enjoy it as well.

I've been so drawn to tales of life changing moves and travels. This book lent me the experience of living outdoors, of moving through life with its attendant joys and sorrows. I was reminded that choices we make lead us into the experiences that summarily define us. I enjoyed reading the painterly prose of Laura Ball's life. It felt like my own for awhile.
