Review

"One of the most graceful and moving nonfiction books I’ve read in a very long time…'The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks'…floods over you like a narrative dam break, as if someone had managed to distill and purify the more addictive qualities of 'Erin Brockovich,' 'Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil' and 'The Andromeda Strain.'…it feels like the book Ms. Skloot was born to write. It signals the arrival of a raw but quite real talent.”—Dwight Garner, The New York Times"Skloot's vivid account begins with the life of Henrietta Lacks, who comes fully alive on the page…'Immortal Life' reads like a novel."--Eric Roston, The Washington Post“Gripping…by turns heartbreaking, funny and unsettling…raises troubling questions about the way Mrs. Lacks and her family were treated by researchers and about whether patients should control or have financial claims on tissue removed from their bodies.”—Denise Grady, New York Times“The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks’’ is a fascinating read and a ringing success. It is a well-written, carefully-researched, complex saga of medical research, bioethics, and race in America. Above all it is a human story of redemption for a family, torn by loss, and for a writer with a vision that would not let go.”—Douglas Whynott, The Boston Globe"Riveting...raises important questions about medical ethics...It's an amazing story...Deeply chilling... Whether those uncountable HeLa cells are a miracle or a violation, Skloot tells their fascinating story at last with skill, insight and compassion" —Colette Bancroft, St. Petersburg Times“The history of HeLa is a rare and powerful combination of race, class, gender, medicine, bioethics, and intellectual property; far more rare is the writer than can so clearly fuse those disparate threads into a personal story so rich and compelling. Rebecca Skloot has crafted a unique piece of science journalism that is impossible to put down—or to forget.”—Seed magazine“No one can say exactly where Henrietta Lacks is buried: during the many years Rebecca Skloot spent working on this book, even Lacks’s hometown of Clover, Virginia, disappeared. But that did not stop Skloot in her quest to exhume, and resurrect, the story of her heroine and her family. What this important, invigorating book lays bare is how easily science can do wrong, especially to the poor. The issues evoked here are giant: who owns our bodies, the use and misuse of medical authority, the unhealed wounds of slavery ... and Skloot, with clarity and compassion, helps us take the long view. This is exactly the sort of story that books were made to tell—thorough, detailed, quietly passionate, and full of revelation.”—TED CONOVER, author of Newjack and The Routes of Man“It’s extremely rare when a reporter’s passion finds its match in a story. Rarer still when the people in that story courageously join that reporter in the search for what we most need to know about ourselves. When this occurs with a moral journalist who is also a true writer, a human being with a heart capable of holding all of life’s damage and joy, the stars have aligned. This is an extraordinary gift of a book, beautiful and devastating—a work of outstanding literary reportage. Read it! It’s the best you will find in many many years.”—ADRIAN NICOLE LEBLANC, author of Random Family   ”The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks brings to mind the work of Philip K. Dick and Edgar Allan Poe. But this tale is true. Rebecca Skloot explores the racism and greed, the idealism and faith in science that helped to save thousands of lives but nearly destroyed a family. This is an extraordinary book, haunting and beautifully told.”—ERIC SCHLOSSER, author of Fast Food Nation  “Skloot’s book is wonderful -- deeply felt, gracefully written, sharply reported. It is a story about science but, much more, about life.”—SUSAN ORLEAN, author of The Orchid Thief  “This is a science biography like the world has never seen. What if one of the great American women of modern science and medicine--whose contribution underlay historic discoveries in genetics, the treatment and prevention of disease, reproduction, and the unraveling of the human genome--was a self-effacing African-American tobacco farmer from the Deep South? A devoted mother of five who was escorted briskly to the Jim Crow section of Johns Hopkins for her cancer treatments? What if the untold millions of scientists, doctors, and patients enriched and healed by her gift never, to this day, knew her name? What if her contribution was made without her knowledge or permission? Ladies and gentlemen, meet Henrietta Lacks. Chances are, at the level of your DNA, your inoculations, your physical health and microscopic well-being, you’ve already been introduced.”--MELISSA FAY GREENE, author of Praying for Sheetrock and There Is No Me Without You  “Heartbreaking and powerful, unsettling yet compelling, The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks is a richly textured story of the hidden costs of scientific progress. Deftly weaving together history, journalism and biography, Rebecca Skloot?s sensitive account tells of the enduring, deeply personal sacrifice of this African American woman and her family and, at long last, restores a human face to the cell line that propelled 20th century biomedicine. A stunning illustration of how race, gender and disease intersect to produce a unique form of social vulnerability, this is a poignant, necessary and brilliant book.”—ALONDRA NELSON, Columbia University; editor of Technicolor: Race, Technology and Everyday Life  “Rebecca Skloot has written a marvelous book so original that it defies easy description. She traces the surreal journey that a tiny patch of cells belonging to Henrietta Lacks’s body took to the forefront of science. At the same time, she tells the story of Lacks and her family—wrestling the storms of the late twentieth century in America—with rich detail, wit, and humanity. The more we read, the more we realize that these are not two separate stories, but one tapestry. It’s part The Wire, part The Lives of the Cell, and all fascinating.”—CARL ZIMMER, author of Microcosm  “If virtues could be cultured like cells, Rebecca Skloot’s would be a fine place to start¾a rare combination of compassion, courage, wisdom, and intelligence. This book is extraordinary. As a writer and a human being, Skloot stands way, way out there ahead of the pack.”—MARY ROACH, author of Stiff and Bonk  “The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks takes the reader on a remarkable journey—compassionate, troubling, funny, smart—and irresistible. Along the way, Rebecca Skloot will change the way you see medical science and lead you to wonder who we should value more—the researcher or the research subject? Ethically fascinating and completely engaging—I couldn’t recommend it more.”—DEBORAH BLUM, author of The Poisoner’s Handbook and The Monkey Wars and the Helen Firstbrook Franklin professor of journalism at the University of Wisconsin-Madison  “This remarkable story of how the cervical cells of the late Henrietta Lacks, a poor black woman, enabled subsequent discoveries from the polio vaccine to in vitro fertilization is extraordinary in itself; the added portrayal of Lacks's full life makes the story come alive with her humanity and the palpable relationship between race, science, and exploitation.—PAULA J. GIDDINGS, author of Ida, A Sword Among Lions; Elizabeth A. Woodson 1922 Professor, Afro-American Studies, Smith College  “Rebecca Skloot’s steadfast commitment to illuminating the life and contribution of Henrietta Lacks, one of the many vulnerable subjects used for scientific advancement, and the subsequent impact on her family is a testament to the power of solid investigative journalism. Her deeply compelling account of one family’s long and troubled relationship with America’s vast medical-industrial complex is sure to become a cherished classic.”—ALLEN M. HORNBLUM, author of Acres of Skin and Sentenced to Science “Writing with a novelist’s artistry, a biologist’s expertise, and the zeal of an investigative reporter, Skloot tells a truly astonishing story of racism and poverty, science and conscience, spirituality and family driven by a galvanizing inquiry into the sanctity of the body and the very nature of the life force.”—BOOKLIST (starred review) “Science journalist Skloot makes a remarkable debut with this multilayered story about ‘faith, science, journalism, and grace.’…Recalls Adrian Nicole LeBlanc’s Random Family…A rich, resonant tale of modern science, the wonders it can perform and how easily it can exploit society’s most vulnerable people.”—PUBLISHERS WEEKLY (starred review)

This book was truly unputdownable! I cannot remember waking up with a book on my chest as many times as I awoke to find The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks there. The author did a commendable job at allowing the African American people to speak with the ethnicity that make us who we are. She made no apologies for the people who'd done injustice to others and she made no excuses for the misgivings of the "good" people of the book. What I truly enjoyed the most was the way that Rebecca Skloot took the highly scientific information that was needed in order to grasp the contest on the story, and put it in laymen terms. I am not at all well acquainted with discussions that speak in detail about the human genome, DNA, cell reproduction, and even the medium in which cells need to survive in order to be studied - even though I've taken classes about these things in college. :) Skloot's prose made it understandable and even enjoyable to read! This was one of the best books that I have ever read for its suspense, for its truth, for its boldness, for its simplicity.BUY THIS BOOK!!! You won't regret it.

I ordered this book to read for one of my Ethics classes. I was worried about so much assigned reading to complete in one week, but it turned out to be a book that you just can't put down.It still amazes me that this is a woman's real life story, the story of her family, and how they have impacted science and anyone who works or benefits from the use of cellular research. That means just about every single person is connected to Henrietta in one way or another. This was a great book that I'm so glad I read. I learned a lot and it kept me entertained and fascinated for days. It will really change your perspective and make you appreciate this woman's contribution to our scientific and health fields.

From the very beginning there was something uncanny about the cancer cells on Henrietta Lacks’s cervix. Even before killing Lacks herself in 1951, they took on a life of their own. Removed during a biopsy and cultured without her permission, the HeLa cells (named from the first two letters of her first and last names) reproduced boisterously in a lab at Johns Hopkins — the first human cells ever to do so. HeLa became an instant biological celebrity, traveling to research labs all over the world. Meanwhile Lacks, a vivacious 31-year-old African-American who had once been a tobacco farmer, tended her five children and endured scarring radiation treatments in the hospital’s “colored” ward.In “The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks,” Rebecca Skloot introduces us to the “real live woman,” the children who survived her, and the interplay of race, poverty, science and one of the most important medical discoveries of the last 100 years. Skloot narrates the science lucidly, tracks the racial politics of medicine thoughtfully and tells the Lacks family’s often painful history with grace. She also confronts the spookiness of the cells themselves, intrepidly crossing into the spiritual plane on which the family has come to understand their mother’s continued presence in the world. Science writing is often just about “the facts.” Skloot’s book, her first, is far deeper, braver and more wonderful. This work has the most human of stories at its core, and never deviates from that important, and often heartbreaking, humanity. When science appears, it does so effortlessly, with explanations of cell anatomy or techniques like “fluorescence in situ hybridization” seamlessly worked into descriptions of the coloured wards of Johns Hopkins hospital to Lacks’s hometown of Clover, Virginia. But The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks is not a comfortable read. I visibly winced at descriptions of Henrietta’s blackened, burned skin after multiple rounds of devastating radiation treatments. I put the book down with a heavy sigh after reading about the experiments that black Americans have been unwittingly subjected to over the years. I cried twice, at events that I can’t talk about without seriously spoiling the book. But it is uplifting too, particularly in a stand-out chapter where Henrietta’s children, Deborah and Zakariyya, visit a cancer researcher to see their mother’s cells under a microscope. All of this is to be expected of a book that refuses to shy away from tackling important themes – the interplay between science and ethics, the question of who owns our bodies, and the history of racism in the US. And yet for all its grand scope, skilful writing and touching compassion, there is one simple element that makes As a final thought, I was struck by the parallels between Henrietta’s cells and her story. Henrietta’s entire family history was eventually condensed into a small sliver of cells that you could carry in a glass vial. They have achieved immortality, used by scientists throughout the world. Similarly, her entire life has been condensed into a moving tale and an exceptional book that you could read in a comfortable day. By right, it will achieve the same immortal status.

What a great book. My previous boss gave me a copy to read and I then bought a copy off of Amazon. I'm sending it to my cousin. Its a must read for anyone, regardless of race or ethnicity.

This could have been the amazing story of how a poor black woman's cells are used to combat, cancer, HIV , HPV, polio, and many more. And it is, a mother of five goes to John's Hopkins for a mass in her abdomen, a particularly aggressive form of cervical cancer, likely caused from HPV or other STD's she caught from her philandering husband. it's the casual way the medical community used (and profited from) cells samples from patients. In a world before informed consent, indeed before ethical testing laws, a young, pretty, vivacious woman deals with the culture of non disclosure to patients. A world where the doctor's word is sacrosanct. As a nurse I found this fascinating, people are much more protected now.But it's more than that, it's the story of Henrietta's family finding out 20 years later that their mother's cells are alive, and helping medical science! They deal with anger, disbelief, and a feeling of betrayal, since others have made money from her Henrietta's cells and they, ironically, can't afford health insurance! Skloot does a wonderful job describing the ongoing difficulties meeting the family and gaining their trust, describing their emotions and reactions (including superstition) in a way that humanized them. Many books have been written about the HeLa (HEnrietta LAcks) cells and the their effect on medical science. This book tells you what kind of person she was, and how it affected her family. One of the best books I've read in a while.

Review

"Keith Bybee has delved into the literature of civility and emerged with a clear-eyed and helpful account of politesse. Let us bow." (Henry Alford author of Would It Kill You to Stop Doing That? A Modern Guide to Manners)"In an age of Donald Trump, campus 'safe spaces,' unprecedented online bullying, and a rising public conception that 'speaking the truth' is the sole response to 'political correctness,' Keith Bybee's thoughtful meditation on the possibilities of civility is a tonic. For anyone who believes that First Amendment values and human morality need not be on a collision course, and that constraint of our own words is neither hypocrisy nor inauthentic, Bybee begins an important conversation about how our discourse can be moral and robust without sacrificing truth or freedom." (Dahlia Lithwick Slate)"The current political moment does not exactly exude civility. Appeals to civic aspirations seem quaint, and for now some of us may just need to follow Bybee's advice of 'going along for the sake of getting along.' But eventually we'll have to stop faking it and internalize a genuine desire for civility. The more aspirational sections of How Civility Works intimate how we might get there. And this important book shows us why pursuing that path is as necessary as it is difficult." (John Inazu Comment)

Professor Bybee's book does a phenomenal job discussing the role that civility plays in our democratic society. By drawing on examples and writings of past scholars, Dr. Bybee does an excellent job evaluating the development of civility over time, differentiating between civility and social norms, and ways that we can look to civility going forward. This book is especially important after the unprecedented and highly-contentious 2016 US presidential election.

Love this little book. Really goes into depth of the concept of civility, very thought provoking and applicable to our times.

Item was a gift liked by all who beheld it. Good fit, as well. Thanks

Excellent piece speaking to contemporary society in a succinct, accessible manner. Bybee examines how "being civil" creates a necessary paradox as conflicting voices strive to forge a more perfect union. He touches on various points without delving too deeply into any one, but provides an excellent overview of ramifications surrounding 21st Century discourse. The book is not only for the politically inclined, but is an intriguing quick read for anyone interested in deeper understandings of the complex interactions between the self, society, and civilization.

I was intrigued by House of Furies because I loved Roux's Asylum series and creepy books in general. First I have to say if you're expecting something identical to Asylum you will be disappointed. Whereas her previous books are set in modern times, House of Furies has a much more gothic feel. I also did not find it as lastingly scary as the other books. In this story Louisa is unknowingly living with the devil and when she discovers the truth she has a difficult decision to make. The pace can be a little slow and some chapters I found repetitive but I liked the overall vibe and premise of the book. There is a brief love story I didn't feel particularly invested in, instead I found myself wishing Louisa developed more of a relationship with Mr. Morningside himself. I'm willing the give the second book a chance to see how the story develops from here.

House of furies by Madeleine Roux tells the story of Louisa, a fortune teller, who is given a gold coin by an older woman and offered a job at Coldthistle House. There’s more to the old woman than Louisa realizes and she’s not sure what to think of her. On their way to Coldthistle House, the wagon wheel breaks and a passing wagon stops to help them. These travelers are on their way to Coldthistle House too. Once Louisa finally reaches their destination, she finds out more than she bargained for and discovers that she will supposedly never leave. The art on the cover and introductions of the chapters are beautifully spooky and appropriate for the story. With interesting relationships and creepiness, I read this book nonstop. 4 Stars!

I found this novel to be a realistic take on its subject matter. I like how the characters weren’t over embellished from the beginning. Each passing chapter you learn more and more about each of them. If you’re looking for a dark, moody read, get this book!

I've always enjoyed Roux's writing but I think she's honestly outdone herself with this one. This story takes place in a boarding house full of characters with... interesting abilities and makes the reader question the line between right and wrong. Can't wait to pick up the next book in the series!

This Book is engrossing, imaginative and a true page turner. You will not put it down.if you enjoy Neil Gaiman or anything fantastic, this book is for you.

I love this series! Brilliantly written, excellent world building and spooky.

Well written, and I enjoyed the story line a lot. Looking forward to book 2.

I enjoyed this book, the characters, and story. I look forward to reading the other books in the series. Hard to put this down!

Snow White. You know the story. Father dead. Evil stepmother imprisons Snow. A huntsman rescues her. She goes to live with the seven dwarves, right? Not so much. Oh, Snow's father's dead. Her stepmother's now queen. And Snow's imprisoned. As she lies awake one night, death comes to her very door. In a desperate attempt to escape, she's captured by not one, but seven, of the burliest, most dominant men she's ever seen. Seriously? One tiny woman versus seven huge huntsmen? But she's gives it her best shot. All too soon, it's clear these men have no intention of killing her. What they want isn't her death. It's her! Terrified? Oh, yes! She comes up with plan after plan to escape, only to be thwarted as each fails. Worse? After each attempt, one of the huntsmen punishes her. Spanked? Strapped? Caned? Oh, those are only the beginning! Her stepmother was evil, but Snow's never experienced anything like this! She fights like a wildcat to no avail. There's no escape. This is her new reality. While she wants to live, how can she begin to accept this? Freyr, Odin, Dagr, Tore, Jerrik, Steen, and Magni are dominant in the most extreme sense of the word. Hardened warriors, they're used to taking exactly what they want, when they want, with no thought of consequences. But is this truly who they are? Snow seems to affect them in some strange way. They're no pushovers. Their natures aren't going to change. Kind and caring will never describe these men. But can these eight conceivably find any kind of common ground? Impossible! Then fate throws a wrench into an already hopeless situation. Deadly evil rears its ugly head, something even the huntsmen can't defeat. Are there miracles? Inconceivable. Death is imminent. Is there any escape? Just maybe. There's only one way. But it's so extreme. The question is who's willing to sacrifice what to defeat the ultimate evil?Zoe Blake and Alta Hensley have created an out-of-this-world fantasy that breaks all the rules! I truly loved this book. Is it dark? Yes! Is it hot and steamy? Absolutely! But these two authors have created a masterpiece that I adored. Zoe Blake has long been a favorite author. Alta Hensley is relatively new to me, although all her books that I've read have been wonderful. Combine these two and you have a uniquely impressive book. Despite the darkness, lack of hope, seemingly impossible situations, there are absolutely hilarious moments when I seriously laughed out loud. Snow's cooking? Let's just say, I'll pass! In the midst of the darkness and uncertainty, there are moments when the humor brings light and hope into the story. Snow is the epitome of innocence. She's also a seductress extraordinaire. Freyr, Odin, Dagr, Tore, Jerrik, Steen, and Magni are the complete of antithesis of Snow when they first meet. Each has his own unique personality, from brooding to mercurial to teasing to strict disciplinarian. Despite their differences, they're united in their desire for Snow. This shouldn't work on any level. Yet it does, magnificently! Zoe Blake and Alta Hensley shine. This is definitely one of the very best dark fantasies I've read. Congratulations Ms. Blake and Ms. Hensley!A final note. Be an informed reader! This is an ADULT book. It contains explicit language, dark themes, and dubious/nonconsensual sexual scenes. If you don't enjoy this genre, this may not be the book for you. There are book synopses and reviews available on Goodreads and Amazon. Use these resources. DON'T LEAVE A NEGATIVE REVIEW WHEN YOU KNOW YOU WON'T ENJOY THE BOOK. It's not fair to the authors. They work hard to provide a quality work product. If you know you'll object to a book's subject matter before you buy it, you're doing yourself and the authors an extreme disservice. Thanks for reading my review and happy reading!

One girl and seven, hot huntsmen? Definitely had some promise there, but at the end I was only slightly tingly instead of panting and wanting more. And isn't that what a good erotic nice should do to you?I took off the first star for general storytelling ability and continuity issues. Everything seemed rushed and haphazard, like a bad porno. The plot didn't need that much back story, being a well-known fairytale, but I just never felt very invested in any of the characters and everything moved along very fast and without much thought. You'll see what I mean when (or if) you get to the ending. Also some of the erotic scenes were creative, but after 7 huntsmen it started to became formulaic. Snow ALWAYS resisted, then ALWAYS gave in to that depraved inner voice, only to be shocked and resist again at the next encounter. The major continuity issue: one huntsman was described as having green eyes, then they were brown, then several pages later they were back to green again. Fire your proofreaders, ladies.I took off the second star for basic writing skills. Some people can look past such errors, but they are one of my big peeves and prevent me from really becoming absorbed in the story. There were numerous punctuation and even some basic part of speech errors (e.g. "...tore my clothing off so fast and furious..." should have been "fast and furiously" ...hello? Have we forgotten what adverbs are?!) peppered throughout the entire book. Again, fire your proofreaders! For a couple of bucks it's an entertaining enough read, just not sure how these books are on bestseller lists with all the errors.

This is one of these stories that you don’t know whether to be shocked or impressed by the depravity of the entire storyline. This is what you get when you get two talented authors, Alta Hensley and Zoe Blake that both can write dark erotic horror fantasy, and together their creative minds devise a demented dark, edgy spin on the tale of Snow White. Forget any dwarves, because no, instead, it is seven large, muscular, huntsmen instead.“Once upon a time, I was a princess named Snow White—now, I am the captive prize of seven huntsmen.”The Huntsman has been hired by the evil queen to kidnap and murder Snow, bringing her heart back to the queen. They will deliver the heart of a boar and take Snow to their cabin deep in the forest. While Snow may be alive, she will find herself in a new prison, because the beast has taken her to their lair. Each of the seven huntsmen will have their own time with Snow, and she will be at their mercy and proclivities. While certain ones have claimed a particular virginity, her time with each man will not be an easy experience. In order of claiming, Tore, Magni, twins, Feyer and Steen, Dagr, Jerrick, and Odin.“Listen to me well, broken bird. Never disobey any of the huntsmen, or you will get far worse than what I am doing here. You are to be submissive, obedient, and compliant in all the ways we ask. Some of my fellow huntsmen are not forgiving or tolerant men.” --Tore“The reality was, I had been taken from one prison to another. I should have never for one second forgotten that the huntsmen are my captors and my life was fully in their hands. I was a prisoner, not a guest. I was here by force, not by choice. If I kept my eyes closed, it would make this all seem like a dream rather than reality. Reality made it all the more dirty and wrong, but a dream was safe.” --Snow“No is not an option.” --Magni“Never question. Never disobey. Never for one second act out like you did before.” –Feyer“The devil had truly possessed my body, but no holy water would be able to purge me clean.” --SnowWord has it that the queen knows Snow isn’t dead and she is coming for her, and the huntsmen too. She may have locked up Snow in the castle and convinced everyone that she had gone mad after the death of her father, but the huntsmen know the truth. How far will they go to protect the women who can tame their savage beast? Don’t come between the huntsmen and their captive prey. The story is one of the reverse harem books that includes kidnap and capture, dubious consent, forced submission, exhibition, humiliation, sadomasochism, dark fantasy, that is raw and edgy. What this isn’t, is a sweet romance; it is filthy dominance, control, and powerful. In April, comes Red and the Wolves.
