Libyan Sands is an evocative description of the author's motor car exploration of the Western Desert (Egypt, Libya, Sudan, Chad) during the interwar period of the 20th century. The insatiably curious Ralph Bagnold began by gathering fellow army officers to see the sites of Egypt -- the pyramids, monasteries, Roman ruins, oasis life, and the desert -- and to experience the joys of motoring in the early days of automobiles. This led to several trips to Sinai, Palestine, and Transjordan in 1926-27, sometimes pioneering new auto routes.Next came a series of long-range trips into the Western Desert in 1927-30. Bagnold and his companions solved a succession of problems --- lack of water (countered by an adaptation that recycled car radiator water losses), getting stuck in soft sand (rope ladders and metal chutes for providing tire traction, reduced tire pressure), navigation in featureless landscapes (invention of a sun compass), crossing sand dune barriers (discovery of sand properties that enabled cars to drive up certain kinds of dunes in certain conditions) --- and in the process explored vast expanses that had been unknown to modern science. At the conclusion of one of the trips, at a Greek café in Wadi Halfa, he and his companions founded the Zerzura Club of desert explorers, named for the last "lost" oasis.A chance meeting with a travel colleague at the Royal Geographical Society map room, examining blank spaces on a map of North-East Africa, led to a return to Egypt. "The externals of Cairo change very slowly, and the atmosphere changes not at all." The 1932 expedition covered 6,000 miles, mostly across uncharted desert. Besides work on a plethora of `ologies --- geology, archaeology, ornithology, entomology, botany, topography --- the expedition was familiar with history (Herodotus, ancient Arabic texts, the Mahdi's uprising, preceding explorers) and took sympathetic note of human interaction: "The common-sense politeness of the people [of northern Sudan], their spontaneous helpfulness and their restraint in the display of any curiosity that might annoy are amazing in comparison with the people of other countries."One of the most memorable incidents was meeting an Italian army contingent at a remote oasis, a meeting celebrated with a dinner invitation and excellent Chianti, but a prologue to the desert war to come. The story is told with a vivid demonstration of practical scientific application, an impressive breadth of interests, contemplation on issues such as remoteness and exploration, and not a little lyrical appreciation of the desert. An epilogue by the author and an afterword by his son put the narrative into perspective. Bagnold was the greatest of the Libyan Desert explorers (first among his fellows, including the now better-known Count Almasy), a scientist of the first order (his Physics of Blown Sand and Desert Dunes has been a standard text on the subject for more than 50 years), and the founding leader of World War II's elite Long Range Desert Group (which arguably deflected the Italian army from overrunning Egypt and seizing the Suez Canal). These achievements are either described or foretold in this modest traveler's tale. The Eland edition is a welcome reprinting of a classic.

Bagnold is one of my heroes. I have read this book a few times. First as hardcover and later as e-book, just to easier check details. Having traveled myself as a geologist in Egypt's Western Desert in a modern 4WD is far cry from these guys driving in back stripped T Fords. Learning by trial and error how to drive in the dune-fields, inventing a simple cooling system, with primitive (but effective) navigation and mostly using their wits and respect for a piece of unforgiving nature if something would go wrong. They explored an uncharted desert just because it was there. Wanting to know what was beyond the horizon. Careful planned expeditions, carrying all petrol and water with no margin for mistakes. Their maps were key to the WWII battles between Rommel and Monty along the coast and the cat-and-mouse game of the long range patrols. Bagnold was so impressed by the systematics he noticed in the sands that he later became an expert in desert dune sand depositional processes, again using the same pragmatic approach that characterises his expeditions in the real thing. The stories of his expeditions are captivating, but perhaps a bit more to somebody who has been there and felt the desert. You feel it in this book. A dead world, yes, but a fascinating one. Paris Dakar with all its high tech lacks what these men had so much of: real guts and explorers blood. On top of that Bagnold was a good writer who keeps you going.

Fascinating desert travels and descriptions by the future leader of the Long Range Desert Group. The famous reconnaissance unit of the British Army that also inspired the British SAS in the WWII North Africa campaign. He also describes inventions that allowed autos to travel in the desert without losing water and to navigate utilizing the sun. Modifications of these ideas are still used.

Bagnold is an excellent writer: clear, concise, humorous, modest. These guys pioneered long distance motorized desert travel and had a lot of fun. This is a fantastic book of their exploits.

Driving Ford cars on narrow tires through deep sand Bagnold spent many years exploring the deserts of Libya between the wars, he learned where the cars could go. He rediscovered ancient caravan routes across the sand and stony wastes. Exciting and very well written, well worth the time spent reading it.

i enjoyed this book because it let me peer into a windshield view of a world many years buried in the sands of the immense western desert. The bravery, to drive fragile cars hundreds of miles into unknown territory. At a time when, if help were needed and if it came at all, would be weeks away, is hard to imagine. I recommend this to all would be explorers and those who just like a good read.l

As an interested reader and also an MD, I love to read and keep up with Siim's content as it is very clear with his concepts and offers an approachable way to explain certain things to both the scientific background and general public accessibly. And he gives straight to the point messages and takeaways.Recommended read.

This book is awesome. Far exceeded my expectations. Synthesizes a lot of important stuff that has been coming out about health lately including things like cold exposure. Even down to the philosophy of everything. Very glad to own it. Good job on self publishing man! Good writing too. Thanks.

The information is great. The writing style is rough. Very helpful if you can overlook poor grammar and style.

Siim is genius! This book is like a bible

Informative, well written. Large print easy reading.

Just started using it... I like how it makes me feel. A buzz but not the "keto flu". I wish they made a bigger serving size. But I like it. I'm not registering on the stick or breathalyzer, but I know how keto feels... I like it and will try peaches and cream next.

From the very inspiring introduction to the methodical teaching of the principals, to the practical implementations, Siim does mankind a favor by making it easy to really optimize your health. I am 4 days into ketosis, and I have lost much of my appetite which makes it easy for me to fast from 8PM or earlier to noon or later with little or no effort. I have never been able to fast before in my lifetime. I think as I get past the fat adaptation phase, that I will be able to extend my fasting. The diet is super tasty too. The only thing missing that I see is a list of the best sweeteners to use on the diet, but that is pretty easy to google. I combine erythritol with a few drops of liquid stevia and it really tastes like sugar without the aftertaste. If I use erythritol with powdered stevia, not so good. Good luck on your journey. It is so worthwhile!

This book was a gift to my husband and I. We have read books on the South Beach diet and have a Keto cookbook so this seemed like a great addition to our collection. Overall this book is poorly written, full of grammatical errors and unbacked scientific claims. The author cherry picks information from journals and research to back his claims saying ridiculous statements about Keto curing cancer or alleviating effects, which then sources studies done on rats, not humans. After going through about half the book and getting overly frustrated with the grammatical errors, I checked for a publisher only to find that this is a self-published book. There are plenty of good Keto books out there, but I would not recommend this one.

"The Last Shot" serves as an interesting historical piece for basketball fans, as it was still relatively early in the explosive growth in recruiting, AAU basketball, and other intensity now driven by the Internet and cable TV. Back then, cell phones and Internet message boards were just two of the factors awaiting. The pressure on these kids has only gotten larger, with Stephon Marbury still a bit unusual with his fame and visibility while so young. As a personal story, the Marbury family is not that interesting, with Dad Marbury particularly unappealing. At least they had a golden child too gifted and focused not to make it, as he did. The three other characters dominate and carry the story, each with a compelling angle and with updates in a welcome afterword in this paperback edition. It's hard not to feel bad about "Russell Thomas", trying so hard to hit the minimum 700 on the SAT and dealing with some personal demons, knowing that without school as an avenue for his exceptional talent, he'd be a future nobody.A 700 on the SAT is appallingly low, yet the author musters sympathy for that low threshold for students who never really gained even minimally decent instruction, for whatever reason, and survive in the barest intellectual environment. The world has changed greatly in nearly 20 years. Yet students still struggle mightily to get to college, and basketball is still a game where the fundamental excitement remains, where a single player can make a huge difference, and a convergence of talent, as at Lincoln High, can mean everything. Darcy Frey captured the game and the human drama nicely.

At first I wasn't sure what to expect with this book. I had to read it for a grad class on diversity in our schools, and so I was just hoping for a read that was more exciting than watching grass grow. I was pleasantly surprised when the book was able to hold my interest. I'm not saying that I couldn't put it down, because I certainly had no problem with that, but I didn't have any fear of picking it back up again. The book chronicles the attempts by various members of a high school basketball team to get out of their poverty stricken, high crime neighborhood via basketball. The author shadowed several members of the team and skips back and forth between the perspectives of each in a way that doesn't jar the reader. The chapters are mixed evenly with dialogue and interviews with the players and pontification on the part of the author about the conditions of the neighborhood, culture of basketball, and current status of society in general.I was especially happy with the length of the book. It keeps a good pace, allow the author to make his point two or three times before finally coming to a close. I was at the point of losing interest in the book just as it ended, because at that point it was obvious that nothing new was going to be said, so the ending came right on time.If you want to vicariously experience growing up in a slum with no prospects, this is a good book for you. If you have to read it for school, this is a good book for you. If you like social commentary, this is a good book for you too. If you fall into any other category, I'd move on.

If you are a basketball junkie this is one you will want to read. A bit dated but lots of notable characters - Rick Barnes, Fran Fraschilla, Rollie Massimino, etc. Chronicles the lives of a powerhouse team of New York area inner city kids playing on the blacktop and with the dreams of making it big and getting out of the projects and into the suburbs. Unfortunately, as the result of broken homes, lack of parental involvement in their education, a broken education system, lots of "advisors" whispering in their ears, coaches on the recruiting trail blowing smoke up their rears about their game instead of talking about their academics - many of them end up not qualifying academically for college and end up on challenging (which they are not prepared for) roads via the jr. college route. Not really a happy ending for any of them but fact based so you wonder how the next 3 or 4 classes fared.

A classic piece of sports writing, but for everyone. The author is a writer for the New York Times Magazine. In this book he writes about the lives of some high school basketball players/high school students (in that order).Like the other posters have noted, it's not just for basketball freaks. It's a well written story about some kids in the 90's who live in the projects in Brooklyn, Coney Island for the most part, and how much basketball means to them. In the book it seems like basketball is their only path to success. But they are up against the recruiters, hustlers and the SATS (which they need to get a 700 on but that's just out of reach for most). You get to meet the student athletes, Russell, Corey, Tchak, and Stephon, their parents, coaches, recruiters, local prophets, etc, and the author treats them all with a level of respect the New York Times Magazine accords the suit wearing sharks. If you get this book, you won't have to read long before you're committed to reading the whole thing. It's a very rare book indeed that leaves me wanting more. I would have loved to read a sequel. Alas, we only get an afterward, but the story had to end somewhere and the afterward was, well, quite the shock.

Coney Island the basketball playground of America is the setting for the Last Shot: City Streets and Basketball Dreams. 4 stories of H.S. basketball players who goto Abraham Lincoln H.S. and play for the might basketball team the Railsplitters (What a cool name). I mainly bought this book because Stephon Marbury is featured as one of the four people in it. I myself grew up in Brighton Beach one town away from Coney Island so I know how life is... This book is true and real and I recommend this book to any sports fan or anyone who is looking for a real treat.

This is a must read, even if you're not a basketball fan.

Must Read! A look at legendary New York Street basketball!

Unlike some of the reviewers, I have no personal connection to Bernard Kerik and was only vaguely aware of his conviction and subsequent incarceration. At the time, I was quick to write Mr. Kerik off as another person taking illegal advantage of the perks of his position. How wrong I was. This is a fascinating story of the failures inherent in our judicial and penal systems, as well as personal insight into one man's rise and fall. As frustrating as it was to read about the unfair treatment and tremendous waste of resources and lives that is our prison system, I was even more appalled by the extreme and unpunished prosecutorial misconduct that Mr. Kerik experienced, especially knowing that he is not alone in this. I hope that writing this book can help Mr. Kerik find peace, and that it motivates people to take a closer look at these very serious problems in our society.I am giving this book five stars because it makes you feel, it makes you think, and it makes you want to act. What more can you want from a book?

I have been concerned with prosecutorial over-reach since I lived in Fort Lauderdale in the early 1970s. The son of one of my employees was associated with a motorcycle club, wore leathers, and had tattoos well before they were popular. The local police and district attorney decided he and his friends needed special attention so they harassed him every chance they could get. He was in and out of court over the five years I lived there. Nothing ever stuck.I learned through this experience that once someone who has prosecutorial power had it in for you, batten down the hatches, as rough weather was on its way. These attacks were not limited to motorcycle riders. One only needs to look at the case of Ray Donovan, who served as President Ronald Reagan’s first Secretary of Labor. In a highly publicized 1987 case, Donovan and six other defendants were indicted by a Bronx County, New York, grand jury for larceny and fraud in connection with a project to construct a new line for the New York City Subway. On May 25, 1987, Donovan (and all of the other defendants) after spending their savings were acquitted, after which Donovan was famously quoted as asking, "Which office do I go to get my reputation back?"I was involved in two court cases in the past year. Fortunately both involved unbiased, no-nonsense judges with a keen sense about the lies and contradictions contaminating the judicial process today. These cases were instructive. A fear of being charged with perjury is non-existent. There is no deterrent for lying under oath. Ask those who are most familiar with the judicial process - lawyers, policeman, defendants. All will agree that lying under oath that is rampant.A recent Supreme Court ruling highlights this disturbing trend of prosecutors stretching the law to win high-visibility convictions. The Court issued a unanimous and much needed corrective in the case of former Virginia Governor Robert McDonnell, once a rising star in the Republican Party, who was convicted of federal corruption charges. He was the victim of an arbitrary and politicized prosecution. The Supreme Court agreed with him and struck a blow to prosecutorial overreach. In the United States, local, state and federal law enforcement are not immune from civil or criminal prosecution, and they should not be. However, state and federal prosecutors for the most part are. Why? According to legal scholars this is to ensure that they are not deterred from doing their job. Why are they different from other officials? Giving prosecutors immunity creates a slippery slope, as it enables them to engage in misconduct and behavior that clearly violates the civil and constitutional rights of those they investigate. If prosecutors were held to the same standard as local, state and federal law enforcement, prosecutorial misconduct would be decreasing, not increasing. This is a fundamental problem. There is a need for accountability of prosecutors in the criminal justice system. The government prosecutors know this and have used it to their advantage. They can distort and exaggerate the justifications to lock up your property, bank accounts and other assets. They can drain you and your family of everything you’ve ever worked for; rip you in the court of public opinion; destroy your family’s financial future; and do everything in their power to prevent you from being able to pay for your defense. These failures and misuses of the system are quickly becoming the norm. They’re far too common. People are being wrongfully deprived of their rights to liberty and freedom without just cause. Where is the outrage! This brings us to the case of Bernard Kerik and his excellent book, “From Jailer to Jailed,” on government overreach. Kerik spent more than 30 years as a law enforcement officer: as a correction officer in a New Jersey jail; a beat cop in Times Square; the head of New York City’s Department of Corrections which includes Rikers Island; and finally as NYC’s top cop as head of NYPD with 55,000 people.Following the 2003 invasion of Iraq, President George W. Bush appointed Kerik as the interior minister of the Iraqi Coalition Provisional Authority. In 2004, Bush nominated Kerik to be the head of the Department of Homeland Security. However, Kerik soon withdrew his candidacy, explaining that he had employed an illegal immigrant as a nanny. His withdrawal resulted in state and federal investigations as a result of which in 2006 Kerik pleaded guilty in Bronx Supreme Court to two unrelated ethics violations (unclassified misdemeanors) and was ordered to pay $221,000 in fines. Kerik then pleaded guilty in 2009 in the Southern District of New York to 8 federal charges, including tax fraud and false statements, and on February 18, 2010, was sentenced to four years in federal prison. In “Jailer to Jailed,” Kerik shares his story as a top cop, his work in Iran and Jordan (he was a very close advisor to King Abdullah), his trial, conviction, and time spent at Cumberland – a federal correctional institution in Cumberland-Maryland.Kerik provides behind the scenes detail on the war in the Middle East, particularly Iraq, that most will find extremely interesting. The story about his conviction and eventual stay at Cumberland are equally riveting. Kerik holds nothing back as he recounts the corrupt politics around his conviction (Judge Stephen Robinson, where are you now? Skadden Alps), his relationship with Rudy Giuliani, various people at Cumberland including a corrupt Correctional Officer. He notes that Thomas Geithner who became Secretary of the Treasury had his own problems with not paying taxes but went scot free. (compare David Petreaus and Hillary Clinton indictments or lack thereof) . Kerik’s case is another example of how laws and punishments are often selectively applied. The danger and imbalance are in that selectivity of criminal prosecution… that danger is not just in corruption cases involving public figures, but has now surfaced in other areas of law.Kerik closes with some thoughts on a new direction for the criminal system:• Mandatory minimums are critical tool in persuading defendants to cooperate in particular for dismantling gangs and drug operations. But there is overreach and the practice is something else. People are now being criminally prosecuted for once was civil, administrative, regulatory conduct.• Federal prosecutors have been too fond of hitting nonviolent, low-level drug offenders with conspiracy counts carrying substantial mandatory sentences. This must be curtailed.• 29 states have taken steps to rollback mandatory sentences, mostly for economic reasons. Why have we evolved into a society that believes that the more severe the punishment the better? There are alternatives – fines, home detention, probation, community service. Punishment should not last a lifetime. Virginia uses a risk assessment program which offers shorter sentences and diversionary programs to offenders who are low risk.• We need to offer more substantial sentence-reduction initiatives for inmates like “Goodtime” credit and GED programs with incentives to complete.Kerik is the canary in the mine. Ambitious prosecutors can indict anyone short of St. Francis of Assisi. We need to continue to reign in overzealous or abusive prosecutions. The media has failed us as well. They must do their job as the Fourth Estate and abandon political bias in weeding out political ties and motives that undermine the rule of law.Over punishing decent people is not only wrong but dangerous for every American and the future of this country. There is no greater threat to a free and democratic nation then a government that fails to protect its citizens freedom and liberty as aggressively as it pursues justice.

An interesting book by the only NYPD Commissioner to go to prison. He does bring up good points about prosecutorial and judicial power. Commissioner Safir, in his book, argued for the end of parole, which had all ready been eliminated in the federal system, but Kerik believes in parole. It is pretty ridiculous that people were in prison with him for over- billing people or over- fishing, when these cases and others could be handled civilly. If someone is wealthy and they commit non- violent crimes, rather than jail for example, why not sentence them to pay higher taxes? The hypocrisy of federal prosecutors for for charging Kerik but not charging Zoe Baird when she had done something similar is striking. My only complaint is that Kerik jumps around in time during the book, I wish he would have been more chronological, but it is worth the read.

I read this book in three sittings. Mr. Bernard Kerik is a professional idol of mine. As an 18 year veteran in law enforcement/corrections, I fully agree with Mr. Kerik's thoughts on criminal justice reform and reform of mandatory minimum sentencing laws. This book spells out Kerik's opinions in an easy to read and easy to comprehend fashion. The chapters on Kerik's time in Jordan and how he tamed Rikers Island were fantastic. Kerik's love for his family and friends (that toughed it out with him) is quite evident while reading this book. It is devastating to read about the loss of what should have been a lifetime friendship. It is also scary knowing the Federal government could go after any one of us like they went after Kerik. Hold your Constitution close. Buy this book you will not be disappointed. Bernard Kerik is a hero in many ways, his newest challenge may be the most difficult to achieve but it is worth the fight.

I remember BK from the tragic events of Sept 11. I read his first book, and admired his will and hard work to over come his "not so" healthy family situation. When Pres. Bush, nominated him for Director of Homeland Security; I was behind his nomination 100%. Of course, when he withdrew and the rumors began swirling about some of his "illegal" actions, I was shocked. After reading his recent book which gives his side of the story and more insight into his "illegal"actions it helps to understand the situation, better. I wish him well in the future and I agree Prison reform is needed; society can be better served by allowing many non violent criminals to be on house arrest, continue to work, support their families and pay restitution/fines. Also, drug court is a great idea; help with addiction is needed and especially for those with mental illness; it does no good to place someone with a mental illness in prison with rapist, or murderers. As for restoring a felons civil liberties; i.e. voting; I have no prob with a non violent felon seeking to having his civil liberties restored after a period of time; once all restitution is paid and no other unlawful acts for a min of five years.

I really like CJ Box's books, and I've bought and read all the Joe Pickett books and most of the others he's written. This is not one of the better ones. In fact, I'd rank it last of all his books that I've read. Why? Because even though the characters are good and the story moves along well, with great settings, it's too hard to suspend my disbelief at all the gaping plot holes. The plot is just too elaborate ever to make sense. For example , picture an experienced back country outfitter who learns of hidden treasure in the mountains. Is he going to (A) go after it alone, with mules as pack animals to haul back the loot, or (B) go after it with a dozen tourists and no means of carrying back all that heavy money? (A), you say? Me too. No one with half a brain would pick (B). This guy would have canceled his trip and made up a story about scouting a new route, and used that pretext to grab the cash. (B) makes no sense at all.And then , think about a woman who is going after said loot. Is she going to (A) hire an individual outfitter to take her up there alone to grab it, or (B) adopt a false identity, befriend some guy and (later) his two teenage girls and join up with a bunch of tourists, with no extra cargo capacity, to get the money? Yeah, I'm gonna have to go with (A).Those are only the most significant plot holes, but there are more. Including the idea that it makes sense to (A) go around killing a bunch of recovering alcoholics around the country to "protect" the loot, and thereby raise all kinds of suspicions, rather than (B) simply going after the loot immediately so there's no chance they can get there first. And then there's Gracie, who at one point starts wondering inexplicably about some hidden maps that she's never seen and is never told about. And how about the idea of simply murdering pretty much everyone who even might raise an alarm, such that the survivors must either die too and have their deaths somehow covered up, or they will in turn raise the alarm? Which brings me back to the idiocy of trying to recover treasure as part of a tourist expedition.Or how about a character named Donna, who gets called "Jennifer" for no reason about a third of the way into the book? And then there's the part where Hoyt wears a wire to elicit a confession, but the perp doesn't admit one single thing, and then the authorities arrest him anyway, even though nothing's changed.Don't get me wrong. I do really like Mr. Box's work. This book is definitely a deviation from his normal standard. But one more quibbling note, which I see in every one of his books: It's ungrammatical to say, e.g., "Bill wished that he WOULD HAVE closed the door." It's correct to say "Bill wished that he HAD closed the door." Sorry, but that's been bugging me.

Cody Hoyt is a lapsed alcoholic, divorced, and a police detective who just doesn't seem to care about much any more. At least until his son goes on a wilderness trip with his soon-to-be step-father. During a murder investigation, Hoyt discovers links to other murders, and somehow figures out that the murderer may be on the same wilderness trip as his son. Despite having zero experience in the wild, he convinces a retired tour guide to help him find his son and maybe catch a killer.I love Box's Joe Picket series and picked this up expecting something different yet similar. It isn't. Cody Hoyt is just not a likeable character (which is generally OK), and it's difficult to invest yourself in him. The situations seem contrived or convenient throughout the book. I did finish the book, but the last half was a struggle, and I finished it only because I thought Box would somehow bring the story together better than he did.Not recommended, but I'm looking forward to the next Pickett novel.

Box writes entertaining who-dun-nits, with nice descriptions of the scenic beauty of the rural rocky mountain west. Good for chilling out on an evening or lazy weekend. Many of his characters are tropes of the western US. The thing I don't like about Box's books is that he seems to be an apologist (or shill) for the west's Dick Cheneys and other "rugged anti-big government individualists" (ranchers, miners, oilmen, land developers, outfitters)--all of whom have been sucking at the government's tits since the 19th century. These people, and Box (whose main characters are inevitably government employees - cops, rangers), are among America's biggest hypocrites.

5+ Stars Compelling. CJ Box is a must read, must buy author. His new series with character Cody Hoyt is a page-turner. Easy to follow stand-alone with no graphic violence or drag-you-down drama.Interesting storyline with realistic setting, actions and reactions.Believable characters with distinct personalities. Informative, thought-provoking and occasionally snarky dialogue.'They said you were crazy, violent, and unpredictable. They said you were a loose cannon and you were all over the place like a fart on a hot skillet. But they also said you were a f'ing fantastic cop and you went at every case like a bulldog on steroids who wouldn’t let go''The long flashlights had been banned from most police departments, which Cody saw as a further sign of official wimpification.''Because if there was a body and it belonged to whom he thought and if the evidence pointed to a homicide, he’d personally go after who did it like a rabid dog until he took that person down. And he wasn’t thinking Deer Lodge, Montana, where the state penitentiary was located. He was thinking Dirt Nap, Montana. Which was just about anywhere he wanted it to be.'I will re-read this story and look forward to more in this series.

This is a well-written book overall. Some plot gaps, but generally story ties together at the end, keeping in mind this is fiction, which does ask our forgiveness. I specially like the character development of Cody, the very flawed hero. His struggle with alcoholism rings true. And the character development of the girls and the guides is excellent. Without that character development, the story would run flat. Overall, a good read. Note that the title, Back of Beyond is also the name of a guide service operated by Seldom Smith, a key character in Edward Abbey's classic anti-establishment, "environmental terrorism" novel, The Monkey Wrench Gang, an excellent read.
