Fascinating read, despite the era in which it describes being nearly 50 years ago. Many principles apply, and he does describe these simply and easily.

This book is positioned as a Dale Carnegie-approved introduction to attitudes to develop for more sales. The book contains the following parts. Each part contains several chapters and key ideas. It is my intent that the discussions of the content kindle your interest and spur you on to buy the book.Part 1. "These Ideas Lifted Me Out of the Ranks of Failure"In this part, the author recommends increasing one's enthusiasm in order to increase sales. The author also recommends keeping careful records of each sales call (visit). Through the records, the author discovers that 70% of the sales are made on the first interview, 23% on the second, and 7% on the third and after. And yet 50% of his time was spent going after the 7%. I could relate to the futility of such an approach.Part 2. "Formula for Success in Selling"In this section the author recommends finding a prospect's inner motivation in order to increase sales. He also recommends asking questions to learn more about the prospect. Based on the stories in the book, the author is a master at the FUD technique of sales (instilling fear, uncertainty, and doubt in others to manipulate them into buying).Part 3. "Six Ways to Win and Hold the Confidence of Others"In this part, the author recommends not speaking poorly about your competitors. He also mentions the power of customer testimonials.Part 4. "How to Make People Want to do Business with You"In this section, the author stresses the importance of remembering names, and not talking too much.Part 5. "Steps in Sale"In this part, the author stresses the importance of selling the interview (meeting), not the product. He also recommends using appointments to manage time more effectively.Part 6. "Don't Be Afraid to Fail"In this section, the author recommends increasing one's effort (such as increasing the number of sales calls) in order to generate more sales. He closes the book by listing the 13 subjects (Temperance, Silence, Order, etc.) Benjamin Franklin discusses in his autobiography, and recommends the reader find his or her own 13 subjects on which to focus.Overall, I found the book interesting with useful elements for traditional relationship-based salespeople. The part I appreciated the most was on effectiveness, such as reviewing sales records to discover that he had been essentially wasting 50% of his time on lackluster prospects.

There are many other reviews that give hints of the content of this book. So I want to be straightforward with you.If you are looking for the best sales book, you found it. After reading many sales book from Gitomer, Ziglar, Cardone and others, I can say that Frank Bettger is the best book I read. It encompasses every aspect of Sales (self-management, psychology, appearance), and he gives many useful tips.No matter if you are beginning in Sales or if you are already a veteran, this book will be of great help for any Sales Rep who want to be in the 1% best performers.

This is an incredible book and the best way to spend $12 you can find. The secrets are all in here. I spent many years as a salesperson for a Fortune 500 company and led sales for 6 years in a row. I have been a sales manager covering a multistate region so I know something about selling. Frank Bettger's book is a classic. But be crystal clear about this... the wisdom inside of this book is not dated. It is timeless. If you mine this book, you will find DIAMONDS... GUARANTEED.I have owned three copies of this book and still read it though I left formal sales many years ago. I recommend it to friends for all kinds of situations. Heck look at all the 5 Star evaluations of it and find another book on the same topic with as many. They are few and far between. This is the real deal. Invest in it. It will pay HUGE dividends for your career and your life.

In 1986-87 I started working for the Prudential Life Assurance in Brisbane Australia. I was only learning sales at that point with very very little experience and i was probably the worst salesman in the whole dept, but i could prospect really really well. My sales manager recommended the book by Frank Bettger, needless to say i went out and bought the book. This book is the greatest sales book that i have ever had the pleasure to read, i loved it, I used it all the time. Over the next month i sold more life business than all other salesman in my dept and was awarded my own office over looking the picturesque Brisbane River from the top floor, my sales manager Gerry Porter was flabbergasted. The book is a masterpeice.

its been a great book, although its a little outdated for some of the topics it still is a great read. the author gives a inside look from his past experiences. He talks about his sales in insurance for large corporate companies. He tells how to deal with tough sales, how to relate to your customers, and the toughest one how to get yourself out there in front of customers. Awesome book hands down a must have for any salesman new or old .

GREAT book on selling. Has a lot of typical selling techniques but what makes this book stand out from a textbook about selling is that it gives a lot of real world examples to help you relate. Definitely one of the best books on selling that I have read. Kept me entertained throughout the entire book. Highly Recommended.

Being interested in improving myself, I had had of course heard of the name Dale Carnegie. As I had perused his books, I came across this one. Since I am new to REAL sales (my weakness being closing), I was intrigued by this book's title and description. After buying it, I realized that it was connected to Carnegie's books because this author actually knew and worked with Carnegie. It was Carnegie who pushed him to start speaking. So even though this book seems to have been written long long ago, I found the advice very useful and have already begun applying some of the tips. I highly recommend reading this if you want a foundation to build your sales on.

He is well informed and a good writer. The CD's are nice for driving. Even better if you rip them on to an mp3

Byron York is one of my favorite writers because he reports. No diatribes. No insults. No hysterics. He just reports facts and when he gives his opinions, they are never overstated. There is no name-calling (The title is a quote from the liberal activists who are the subject of the book.) and no conclusions without supporting facts. In fact, York respects his readers enough to let them draw their own conclusions most of the time.If you think that the campaign reform laws took money out of politics, you really need to read this book. Unfortunately, most of what they did was take political parties out of politics and make them more politically beholden to groups who now control most of the money spent in campaigns and can therefore dictate the policies of the parties, who have heretofore made their own policies and run on them. Having positions and platforms imposed by big money donors was supposed to be why campaign finance reform was needed, but expecting politicians to support such laws without a loophole in reserve shows incredible naivete. The loophole the Democrats were counting on may end up turning into a sinkhole that consumes them or imprisons them for years to come.I have found plenty of authors and radio and TV hosts all across the political spectrum who will shout accusations, hurl epithets and insults and state opinions as facts, but it is a rare one who can simply report details in as clear and cogent a manner as Mr. York. I wish all political books were as well written and reasonable as this one.

I'm someone who is fascinated by the human capacity for nonrational thinking, mob behavior, self-delusion, and the success of well-engineered social movements. If you are a student of human behavior, particularly of how social movements are packaged and sold, and how ideologies can spread like diseases through a population, you'll find this book insightful and illuminating. The title of the book is more provocative than the material inside, which is well-researched and not particularly inflammatory (except to the most thin-skinned among us). The book chronicles how the American Left is re-making itself to become competitive in today's highly communicated and regulated political world. It could be viewed as diagnostic and prescriptive for both Left and Right, in the great competition for hearts and minds that defines modern American politics. My favorite chapter was the one the author almost left out: "From Fringe to Mainstream." This chapter captures how unimportant and irrelevant actual evidence is in demonizing one's political enemies, showing how accusations are virtually as good as evidence when denigrating the other side. "If it might possibly be true, then it most probably is true," seems to be the creedo of the modern viralized ideologue. Also fascinating is how humans feel they can plumb their opponent's inner psychology--in the absence of any formal training--discovering that the opposition is perpetually driven by sickness and evil impulse, while the motives of "my side" are pure and honest and moral. This book is certain to increase the cynicism of all readers, whether from Left or Right. And that's not a bad thing. Our republic depends upon our citizens' ability to recognize and resist emotional manipulation, which this book chronicles in fascinating and informed detail.

Byron York is a masterful writer. The subject matter that he has written about is one that I find rather banal. When I started the book I thought I won't finish this, why bother, this won't keep my attention. But guess what, the material didn't the writer did.I am not saying the material was wrong or incorrect, heavens no. I was just more enamored at how the pages flew by with this young man's prose. Given a topic that I enjoyed and I would become a raving fanatical fan of this writer.Anyhow, the book is scary showing how the left wing has gone from the organized academia and intelligentsia to today being THE billionaire and millionaire boys funding club. The left's organized use of 527's and the fact that 92% of all donations of $ 1 million dollars or larger go to democratic causes should shout loud and clear just who is the party of the elites and money. I'll give you a hint - it ain't the republicans. You also get a look at how the media portrays their darlings like Michael Moore and Robert Greenwald- movies that were basically unwatched yet received glowing reviews, and more press pre gross dollar sales than any movie in history. One of the greatest chapters is Mr. Yorks analysis of John Podesta. Mr. York has summed up the current Democratic Party's main problem in one sentence many other people have said the same thing myself included but nobody is listening. I find it mystifying that the Republicans are actually telling the Democrats what their problem is over and over and over again and yet they never hear it. Well I will quote Mr. York one more time"The bottom line was that Podesta was arguing that his party's problems were mostly related to communications, not content.""Podesta keeps saying, What's our bumper sticker?" (referring to a quick idea that simple to communicate)"The problem is not the bumper sticker. The problem is the car."Amen Mr. York, you preach it.The saddest chapter of the book is Chapter Eight where Mr. York talks about the strange life of the Theocratic Conspiracy theorist. If you have never met one of these people you are lucky. Envision the most radical preacher you can multiply them by ten but they are now a anti-preacher, filled with hatred against any Christian. These people exist and they are growing quickly, they seem to have some sort of metaphysical hatred against anybody whom might call themselves a Christian and right wing. All you need to do is search Amazon for book about right wing and religion and you will be shocked. These people would burn the late Mother Theresa at the stake if the could.A highly enjoyable author with magnificent penmanship skills; I highly recommend this book and will look forward for more of Mr. Yorks work.

Reveals the true nature of George Soros the Hungarian who wishes to dominate American Politics for his own gain. Just watch the way he treats his au pairs in the press in nyc. the fat old man is disgusting in his speedo suit in th nyc post pictures. Just what evey young lady wants to beseen with on the beach we have a term for those women.

Review

“Lively and loving, Taunton’s memoir of his surprising friendship could hardly be more enjoyably engrossing.” – Booklist“With its unique combination of superb storytelling, intellect, and passion, The Faith of Christopher Hitchens achieves—and deserves—the rare status of instant classic.” – Brian Mattson for The Gospel Coalition“Taunton’s smooth and accessible prose brings to life what seems to have been a dear and lively friendship between two thinkers at odds politically and religiously, but not intellectually.” – Publisher’s Weekly“Larry Taunton’s book, The Faith of Christopher Hitchens is so good that words fail me. It is that triple rarity, an astonishing tour-de-force of heart and mind both, and a bona fide page-turner. If it doesn’t keep you up late, you are already sleeping. Who dreamt anyone would ever get to see this side of the cartoon enfante terrible? Taunton’s unprecedented access to the ‘real’ Hitchens is a gift from the heavens — literally and literarily — to anyone wanting to know who he really was, that man behind the withering, glowering mien and fulminating blunderbuss voice. This indefatigably clear-eyed window into the soul of the great Hitch may break your heart with love for its subject, as it did mine, or it may make you wish to rent yourself in twain with rage, Rumpelstilskin-style. Either way, it’s quite a book. A triumph.” – Eric Metaxas, New York Times bestselling author and nationally syndicated radio host“Beautifully written. You’ve got to read this book. Everyone should read this book. You’ll really get something out of it.” – Chris Matthews of MSNBC’s Hardball“Every fan of Christopher Hitchens must read this elegant, honest, and beautiful tale of an improbable friendship between an American Christian and an English atheist. If you thought you knew ‘Hitch,’ you did not. Now, you will.” – Paul Reid, bestselling author of The Last Lion, Winston Spencer Churchill: Defender of the Realm“If you really want to get to know someone intimately, go on a multi-day cross-country road trip, share fine food and expensive spirits, and have open and honest conversations about the most important issues in life. And then engage them in public debate before thousands of people on those very topics. In this engrossing narrative about his friendship with the atheist activist Christopher Hitchens, the evangelical Christian Larry Taunton shows us a side of the man very few of us knew. Apparent contradictions dissolve before Taunton’s penetrating insight into the psychology of man fiercely loyal to his friends and passionately devoted to leading a life of integrity. This book should be read by every atheist and theist passionate about the truth, and by anyone who really wants to understand Hitch, one of the greatest minds and literary geniuses of our time.” – Michael Shermer, Publisher of Skeptic magazine and author of The Moral Arc

The book details the complex person that was Christopher Hitchens. Before I read the book I thought Hitchens was, religiously speaking, nothing but a devout atheist, and I still thought that after reading the book, but an atheist with some cracks in his armor no less. Hitchens friendship with this christian author is a delightful surprise, and seeing Hitchens defend his unusual friendship against atheists made me laugh out loud several times, mostly because it surprised me so much.Unlike what some dishonest reviews of this book might proclaim, the author does not claim in any way that Hitchens had a deathbed conversion. But based on the copious amount of time he spent with Hitchens, away from cameras and the public eye, the author is able to reveal information about Hitchens that you won't find out anywhere else, and all of it is interesting and even somewhat shocking. I highly recommend this book to anyone wanting to know more about the real person who was Hitchens, and to christians and atheists especially.

I honestly can't see what all the brouhaha is about. The author is a Christian and speaks in that voice. However, he is respectful toward Hitchens the man, is clearly fond of him, litters the book with verifiable events, appearances, and quotes and then adds to these private moments that don't contradict them in the least, but rather humanize Hitchens and show that there was, indeed, a person there. It is impossible to read the book and not become fond of Hitchens, and I say this as a longtime atheist. Hitchens comes off as fearless, thoughtful, intellectually curious and generous, and in fact decent—a man of integrity and kindness (if also with a few basic flaws) when not onstage. He comes off, in fact, rather better than the author himself, and I like Hitchens all the more for having read the book, not less. There is no claim to a deathbed conversion here, and in fact a rather clear statement that there is no evidence of one. The author does, as a Christian (and what else might we expect him to do, if he has any integrity?) indicate that he hopes that there was one, silently, despite the lack of evidence, because he is quite simply that fond of Hitchens.More importantly, what is in evidence is a strong friendship grounded in mutual respect and curiosity between two individuals whose own followers too often miss the point and purpose that drives them to speak in the first place—that of making the world and human life somehow better. Both seem to understand that they share this deep motivation and value, even if they disagree on nearly everything else. And just as importantly, they courageously confront this disagreement, together, and listen to one another with respect.I find it to be an edifying and hopeful account that doesn't betray anything that Hitchens stood for.Anyone offended by this book is quite simply an ideologue who—unlike Hitchens—is very interested in not hearing things that challenge our preconceptions or require us to honestly grapple with them as fortification for our intellectual and moral mettle.

This book is both inspirational and sobering. It gives a small glimpse into the life of a man who publicly ridiculed the Christian faith and those who believe it. Taunton does a marvelous job at being honest and stern with the Truth that He believes about Jesus Christ and also shows his deep love for his friend, Christopher Hitchens. I am truly glad to have read this book, it has changed my perception of a man that I believed to be my enemy as a believer, and taught me that he was conflicted and seemed to be searching for truth in life. Hitchens was a giant in the skeptic world, but he now seems less offensive and powerful as I once thought he was. I was convicted of my foolish thoughts of judgement towards a man that Jesus loves and died for, and was reminded that there is no room for bias when dealing with the gospel.

Great Book to read that gives amazing insight into the life of a Nicodemus-like person of our time.

There are some historical figures who stand out because of their amazing accomplishments and there are some who stand out because of the depth of their character. There are a select few who stand out for both accomplishment and character, and prominent among them is the Flying Scotsman, Eric Liddell. Liddell accomplished great feats of athleticism, then left behind fame and fortune to pursue a much higher calling in the dangerous mission field of China. He did it all with the highest character, living a life that was very nearly unblemished before it came to an untimely end in a Japanese prison camp. His story has been told through books, movies, and documentaries, and it has just been told anew through Duncan Hamilton’s For the Glory: Eric Liddell’s Journey from Olympic Champion to Modern Martyr, easily my new favorite. Hamilton has woven together a brilliant, beautiful, stirring look at an incredible man.As far as I can tell, Hamilton does not profess to be a Christian and this gives him a different perspective on Liddell than most (or all) of his prior biographers. Many of Hamilton’s other works focus on sports so perhaps it was Liddell the athlete that first drew him. Yet as he focused on the athlete he necessarily had to focus on his character and the faith that generated it. His work, then, tells far less of Liddell’s inner man and far more of his words, his works, and the way others encountered and perceived him. Hamilton is especially keen to liberate Liddell from the way most of us know him—the film Chariots of Fire. Though that film was plenty good, it left those who viewed it with a skewed perspective of its hero. “Most of us are smart enough to realize that filmmakers who pick history as their subject tinker with the veracity of it. But our perception of an event or of a person still becomes inextricably bound to the image presented to us. So it is with Chariots of Fire. So it is with Liddell. We’ve ceased to see him. We see instead the actor Ian Charleson, who played him so compassionately.” Hamilton remedies this by giving us Liddell as he was. And that is something special. There were a number of elements that made this biography stand out to me, the first of which was Hamilton’s telling of the 1924 Olympics and especially of Liddell’s gold medal triumph. He tells this in such a way that you can almost see it, you can almost feel the electricity of the crowd, you can almost hear them roar. It’s brilliant. And yet he is sure to circle back at the end of the book, to Liddell’s final race. Liddell was suffering deeply in this time, yet wanted to do something fun for the people who were with him in that Japanese prison camp. He ran one last race which, because of his failing body, he could not win. “Seen in the terrible light of what awaited him, this race is Liddell’s best and unquestionably his bravest. Where his initial speed came from, and how he managed to sustain it for so long, is unfathomable. The courage he summoned to run at all is extraordinary, a testament to his will. Liddell never competed again, and those privileged to see his farewell to athletics appreciated only retrospectively the absolute miracle he performed in front of them. The dying man had lost, but to them he was still the champion.”Another element that stood out was the depth of the criticism that faced Liddell when he refused to complete his race on Sunday. The press maligned him and friends turned on him. He was regarded as daft and unpatriotic. Yet he let his character speak for itself, even as the games began."No one was further removed from the bright young thing and the anything-goes bohemian than Eric Liddell. And an easy, but horribly flawed, assumption was made about him because of his character. His expression of religious faith was perceived as a sign of innate weakness. Because of his decision not to compete on a Sunday, Liddell was dismissed as a pacifist in top competition—a man with a soft center. The notion was ludicrous. Once, pointedly asked how he won races so often against the odds, Liddell answered: “I don’t like to be beaten.” On the track Liddell knew where to find the opposition’s jugular—and he also knew how to rip it out. Paris was a test of temperament for Liddell long before it became a test of speed, requiring qualities no one could coach: fortitude, integrity, forgiveness, stoicism, will. You either possessed these or you didn’t."He did in great measure. And then there is the account of what Liddell did with his fame. “There have always been personalities who hide only where the press and the photographers are certain to find them and plunge into fame, letting its riptide carry them away. Liddell wasn’t one of them. Fame was only worthwhile because it made him much more likely to be listened to. He wasn’t one of those Bible-thumping preachers who, good book in tow, had to wander peripatetically in search of audiences. The audiences came to him. The problem was finding meeting halls big enough to accommodate them.” He did not seek fame, it sought him. And he used it to tell others about Jesus. But then he also left it behind to serve God in obscurity and great danger so he could tell even more people about Jesus. And then there is the account of Liddell’s death and the mark it left not only on his family but on the whole community in that prison camp. Hamilton portrays Liddell as living an almost unbelievably good life that was followed by an agonizingly tragic death. His death came after much physical weakening and suffering but also much mental anguish. Not only was he separated from those he loved most, but he fell into a deep depression at least in part because doctors had told him his physical symptoms were a sign of mental weakness, that he was going through a nervous breakdown. He “felt inexplicably guilty about it [telling friends].” He said, “There is just one thing that troubles me … I ought to have been able to cast it all on the Lord and not have broken down under it.” He died without knowing the truth, that he had a malignant brain tumor that was destroying him from within. Still, he died as he lived, professing his love for God and his dependence upon him. His last words were fitting: “It’s complete surrender.”Hamilton’s telling of Liddell’s life is uniformly positive, perhaps because he simply couldn’t find any major blemishes. It’s almost like he finds himself shocked at the sheer goodness of his subject. His telling occasionally reflects a little bit of antagonism toward certain Christian organizations and includes a couple of unfortunate word choices and cultural references. But these are only minor quibbles with what is otherwise a brilliant book—one of 2016’s must-read biographies.I will let Hamilton speak once more as he reflects on the life he spent so much time studying. “Valorous lives like his—which must be calculated in terms of value rather than length—encourage us to make our own lives better somehow. In his case that’s because everything he did was selfless, each kind act bespoke for someone else’s benefit. He believed entirely that those to whom ‘much is given’ are obliged to give ‘much in return’—and should do so without complaining about it. In adhering to this, he never demanded grand happiness or great comfort for himself. He grasped only for the things that mattered to him: worthwhile work and the care of his family.” May he inspire us to live such simple, meaningful, surrendered lives.

In his book, For the Glory: Eric Liddell’s Journey from Olympic Champion to Modern Martyr, sports journalist Duncan Hamilton chronicles the life of one of the unlikeliest Gold Medalists in the history of the Games. Liddell, who was made infamous in the press for refusing to run on the Sabbath, won a race of longer distance in record-breaking time, surprising everyone but himself. But Liddell’s story doesn’t end there. Hamilton eloquently describes how this remarkable man continues his race beyond the finish line in Paris, willingly forsaking his own personal fame in order that he might answer a higher call as a missionary to China. For the Glory is exquisitely written, meticulously researched, and incredibly moving. Hamilton is a gifted communicator who weaves a detail-rich narrative that captures the essence of his renowned subject. From the beginning, the reader is immersed into the history surrounding Eric as he comes to life within the pages of this incredible volume. Liddell’s journey from childhood to Olympic Champion is inspiring, but it is his story after Paris that truly speaks of the man Eric is. Even as gold is refined by fire, so a man’s character is revealed in the heat of torturous circumstances. For the Glory is an account that allows us to see the humor, humility, and selfless sacrifice of Eric Liddell, even as he deteriorates and succumbs in a Japanese concentration camp. I have loved Eric Liddell since I was a child and watched Chariots of Fire multiple times so, not surprisingly, I have read several biographies of his life. This book is better than a movie. For the Glory is the best biography I’ve read on its subject, and may be one of the best non-fiction books I’ve ever read. For the Glory may appeal to everyone from pure sports fans to history and biography buffs alike. May we Christians be convicted by Liddell’s example and live for the glory of the One who takes us all the way to the finish line.I was given a free copy from the publisher in exchange for my honest review

Chariots of Fire , a movie that captured 4 Academy awards in 1981, focuses on one small time in the life of Eric Liddell. The book brings to life the man who touched the lives of so many in England, Scotland, China, and around the world. He lived out 'the Sermon on the Mount" Duncan Hamilton's book is the best biography I've ever read, his ability to craft sentences in all his books is unusual good, but in this book, going to places and interviewing persons who knew Liddell and live with him in the internment camp, what he did, and how he enabled people for all sectors of society, readers are able to be there as well. It's a book that may well change your life as it has mine.

This is an excellent manual to have handy. Written in an understandable manner, good for a beginner or a seasoned computer user.I had Windows Vista and used it for about 8 months. Then got a new computer that came with Windows 7 installed. I immediately knew Win7 was much better, but thought it was actually just a stripped down version of Vista. It is not. This manual takes you step-by-step through the Win7 system, from "Getting Started" to system troubleshooting, should you want to go there. Heck, I liked it just for learning what each little icon at the top of the Internet Explorer toolbars do.It is all here. How to turn things on and how to turn them off. (Did you know you could disable most of those blinking ads that drive you nuts on webpages? Well, you can.) How to set your email account to get emails from more than one account. How to use just a few handy keyboard strokes to save yourself about a million "clicks" per year. How to enable features and disable features. (You know those irritating system messages that keep popping up? You usually don't need them and you CAN get rid of them!)This book is just chock full of nifty, time-saving tips. And the guy who wrote it has a nice sense of humor, which makes the reading alot more fun. I started at the beginning and worked my way through the manual. If I came to a part I didn't need, I just skipped it. Plus the author tells you what you can skip, what you should not skip. He also explains the consequences of any change you might make, how to reverse it, how the computer itself is doing a backup of its system settings, how to restore those settings if needed, how to make a backup disk of your own, and why you should. (Oh, yes, I have been lax about this - but now that I've read this manual I will not be so lax in the future!)Why did I purchase a printed manual rather than just using the online Help Menu? Well, what if the problem involves not being able to get online? And besides that, some of us just prefer to have a book in our hand to which to refer. I'm one of them. Also, I wanted overall knowledge about the Win 7 operating system. I find the online help great for a specific problem, but not conductive to learning about the overall system.Definitely worth the money! NOT something you will read in one sitting, that's for sure. But you can go to the index and look up one specific thing that you want to know right away and then later start at the beginning and really learn about the Windows 7 Operating System.

My wife recently got a new Windows 7 computer, and though I'm still working with two XPs, I'm the one that had to set this up for her. Understanding Windows 7 wasn't THAT difficult, but it is sufficiently different from XP that I knew I was going to need a reference book.I've been reading David Pogue's columns and watching his videos for about 10 years, and he's become my OS "go to" guy. So it was natural to buy "Windows 7 - The Missing Manual." On day two (after loading programs), there were three questions to which I found answers in David's book. And I've got to say that I got a chuckle out of two of the answers and an out-and-out laugh from one. To actually laugh at any discussion of setting up a home network or why Windows 7 asks permission to run any program or wake the *()&()%# computer up from its nap makes setting up and getting going on a new system much more enjoyable. (See David's discussion of 32 vs. 64 bit computing.)As it turned out Windows 7 isn't all that difficult. By that I mean that Microsoft's programmers almost got the idea as to what an end user is. David takes it the rest of the way. And now my wife can feel comfortable in looking up her questions ... not that she will.EW

Helpful. OK. Best I could find. I like that it doesn't have a huge amount of quips and chit-chat, but it would be even better if this author would edit to remove the small amount of exteraneous chatter, and stick to business. The idea should not be bonding and becoming friendsby chatting and hanging out together, but just provide the information as efficiciently and effectively without ANY distraction or humor.

If you only have the budget or shelf space for one Windows 7 reference book, you can't go wrong with this one. David Pogue has kept close to the spirit of the subtitle in every "missing manual" offering, and has indeed delivered "the book that should have been in the box"."Windows 7: The Missing Manual" is organized into 27 chapters (with eight appendices and an excellent index) addressing seven broad topical areas. Because Windows 7 is radically different from Windows XP (and somewhat different from Vista), the user-centric, detailed discussions of file and folder management and interface options are clear strengths of this book, and it clearly points out the major changes (especially those that deliver enhanced functionality with the change). The book contains sound advice on backup and maintenance strategies, on integrating Windows 7 machine into networks, and (in the appendix) installation options. This book sometimes gets a little too cute when presenting concepts; it seems like the influence of the "...for dummies" series may have bled over here. For example, in the discussion of Windows Remote Assistance in the "Getting Help chapter, Pogue refers to the person offering help as "the expert", and the person needing assistance as "the clueless friend". While I get the joke, those of us who have the possibility of serving at the "expert" appreciate we are often helping very smart people with complex and often poorly documented technology. Similar jokes about concealing document and program histories from spouses and employers fall flat. These should be left to the folks producing books with black and yellow covers... This is a minor quibble, but over almost 900 pages, there is at least one too many of these.Purchase of this book is includes 45 days of access to the online Safari version, but be prepared to provide your name and email address (and opt-out of the preferences for three separate streams of email communications...and agree to terms and conditions that you have to read --and and scroll through-- in a tiny window). Also be aware the Safari contents are Flash-based, which may be an issue of you use any Flash blockers in your browser.Like other "missing manual" titles, this book refers to additional online content: freeware/shareware in a "missing CD" portion of the publisher's website.

Review

"When Mary called me about Acorn, I told her that deafness is truly no big deal. You just need to teach dogs like Acorn a little differently. And that not being able to hear can actually be a positive thing -- a feature, not a bug. Deaf dogs will sleep soundly through thunderstorms. They won't freak out when the doorbell rings. They sleep very soundly. They don't mind loud environments, I took my deaf Dalmatian to the firework displays every year. "It has been delightful to see Acorn blossom and become an ambassadog for deaf pups everywhere. And I'm thrilled that he continues to help his fellow CityDogs who are still waiting for adoption."--Trish McMillan, MSc, CPDT-KA, CDBC"Definitely Awesome, The Story of Acorn is a beautiful story for children about rescue, love and acceptance. It's a wonderful example of all dogs being individuals and deserving of an opportunity to thrive and share their unconditional love with us." Â --Greg Murray, Award-winning photographer and author of Peanut Butter Dogs and Pit Bull Heroes"Deafinitely Awesome is a delightful and inspiring story for young readers, and all dog lovers as well. It shows us the power of love, persistence, and triumph with humor and charming illustrations. The book will touch all who read it and should encourage adoptions of these very special dogs!"--Sandra Philipson, MA, CAGS, Reading Specialist, Children's Author
