From School Library Journal

Gr 4–6—Ernestine is determined to bring on the zombie apocalypse. She visits a neighboring graveyard with her younger stepbrother and partner in crime, Charleston, in an attempt to raise the dead. After a possible zombie sighting, Ernestine rushes back to her home where she lives with her artist/caretaker parents in the MacGillicuddie House for Retired Artists, Both Performing and Otherwise where a wild party is underway. The converted apartment house is filled with eccentric and colorful residents, presided over by the glamorous, kooky, art-loving, and incredibly wealthy Mrs. MacGillicuddie. The party reaches a raucous climax when a giant chandelier crashes down from the ceiling, practically squashing Mrs. M. More incidents prove that foul play is certainly involved. Are there really zombies afoot, and what is it about them that has the precocious, capable, and imaginative Ernestine so intrigued? All of these answers are eventually revealed, although one dangling loose end will draw readers into a potential sequel. Debut author Wyatt offers a plot-driven, humorous mystery that will keep kids turning pages. The diverse and intriguing cast of characters allows for multiple suspects, red herrings, and a surprise twist ending. Themes include the importance of community and family, the value of the older generation, the narcissistic nature of social media, and overcoming hurt from the past. VERDICT A traditional mystery filled with creepy zombie bits and laugh-out-loud funny moments make for a winning combination. A strong choice for most collections.—Kate Nafz, Fair Lawn Public Library

This book will keep you up at night, in a good way. Your mind will work overtime as zombie apocalypse expert, Ernestine, and her stepbrother work through a maze of clues and quirky characters as a wild, murderous plot unfolds. Ernestine, true to her name, is serious, sincere, and determined in zombie hunting as well as being the “adult” when her artist parents get distracted. The quick, clever dialogue is very funny and the eccentric characters/suspects/zombies truly come to life.

I liked it because it kept me interested from the very beginning to the very end. I would recommend this to all my grandchildren and great grandchildren. I gave it five stars because it was very well written.

My nine year old boy enjoyed Ernestine’s quirkiness and creativity. He laughed as he imagined the ridiculous situations described. For all of Ernestine’s crazy adventures, however, there was something that rang so true in her adolescent desire for just a little more supervision.

I enjoyed it.

Enjoyed the book. Fun, funny and entertaining. I could visualize this as a movie. Thoroughly enjoyed the characters, the mystery and Ernestine!

The story is well-paced, unpredictable and irreverent. The writing is skillful and paints clear and fanciful images and is genuinely amusing. The characters are quirky, the vocabulary level used is appropriate for the middle-grade age bracket. When present the adults in the story are generally useless or ridiculous which is often the case with young adult books. Ernestine strives to be heroic in her fanciful endeavors and in the process is sometimes snarky and impatient. While reading I was reminded of books I loved as a child with central characters like Ernestine, ones with little oversight and fun adventures. It helped to balance the total and complete control my parents had over my young life which while essential also could feel suffocating. I lived vicariously through the children who acted more like the adults and were often given dominion over their lives. Ernestine is brave, a leader and a problem solver. The book is thoroughly funny and engaging.

I really loved ERNESTINE, CATASTROPHE QUEEN. So much fun. Mystery, an eccentric cast of characters, and a girl trying to start the zombie apocalypse!!! And my 10yo loved it right a long with me. Such a great book to bookclub with your tween. Is that still a word? Here's Nova's review 💜By: 10yo Novalee AndreeErnestine Catastrophe Queen, by Merrill Wyatt, is a bloodchilling mystery with a twist that surprised the heck out of me. The story focuses on a girl named, (you guessed it) Ernestine. She is a very smart girl and she believes that she can bring the dead back to life. She walks in the dead of night to the graveyard with her stepbrother to try to begin the zombie apocalypse. But, as her experiment takes a turn she finds that her neighbor and her family is in danger. She is eager to solve the mystery and prove to everyone that it is just her zombie causing all of this, and she is determined to catch the zombie and to make more. But, as the plot leads on, Ernestine finds herself in even more danger. Someone is attempting to break in and murder her unsuspecting rich neighbor, Mrs. McGillicuddie, who is not worried at all. Ernestine is still convinced it is a zombie, but new evidence is leading her in a different direction. What I thought during half the text: Did Ernestine even make a zombie? Now that I really think about it, though, I think she did. Anyway, if you want to know what really happens, reading the book would be highly advisable, because it was really amazing. Five stars!!!!

I had a wonderful time reading this book, and I am far beyond my middle-grade reading years! Ernestine is smart, competent, super-prepared for anything and full of confidence. My 10-year-old self wants to be her best friend. However, my favorite parts are the descriptions of the other people living in the MacGillicudie House for Retired Artists, Performing and Otherwise. Wyatt has built in a lot of sly humor that older readers will probably appreciate more, even while it remains entirely appropriate for the target audience. The potential zombie apocalypse is an entertaining side plot to the mystery at the heart of the book. I received an advance copy and promptly bought 3 copies for my favorite young relatives once the book was officially out. Highly recommended!
