The idea for Samsara Dog arose because Helen "wanted to write a book for children that gave the idea of reincarnation in as natural a way as possible." She chose Dog as her main character because "most children have experienced some emotional connection with a dog or a pet." Julie says, "Samsara Dog was an exciting challenge to illustrate." She worked daily with Dog for more than two years and says "there were times when he was difficult and elusive to capture. But I grew to love him. I bought Samsara Dog many years ago for my boy when he was quite little, as I was looking for interesting reads outside of the regular, known books. It looked interesting so I picked it. What else can I say other than I loved the book. At the time my son was too young to fully grasp the meaning behind the story but I read it to him, nonetheless, time and time again. Every single time that I read it, it touches my soul and makes me cry. Sometimes I think I read it to him so often because I loved it so much. The illustrations are gorgeous but much more than that is the story itself. It is moving and exquisite.
This book is powerful, beautiful, evocative and brilliantly illustrated. Samsara Dog will make you think, and even change you, as he lives again and again, until he learns the most important lesson of all. Read it to your children. Read it for yourself. And you will want everyone you know and love to read, too. I cannot recommend this book highly enough. If you have a beating heart, you will be deeply, deeply moved, and beyond...
What a marvelous journey this story is, I have a lump in my throat every time I read it, not to mention gaze upon the incredible illustrations. This gentle story of reincarnation -- many lives in being released from the wheel of Samsara -- is conveyed with the warmest touch, not over or under played.The book itself, in my estimation, has arrived at a place where it is no longer on the wheel of Samsara, but has reached its own place of Nirvana. It completely reached my spirit, my mind, my heart, to witness this book. I thank you (author Helen and illustrator Julie) so very, very much.
I purchased this book for my 10 year old grandson for Christmas. We had some great discussions about death and dying as a result of reading the book together. A week later his new brother was stillborn. You just never know when you have to start talking about death and dying with children and it gave us a great language to talk about what happened and begin the process of acceptance.The illustrations are wonderful and the story is uplifting. It is one that children will understand more and more as time goes on because the story is easily understood at face value and then as the child grows perspective, the depth of the story becomes more apparent.
This book is a must for your book shelf, whether you are a dog-lover or not, whether you have children or not, whether you are young or old. In our relentless pursuit of material pleasures and of more, more, more, we are becoming increasingly alienated from the power and beauty of the natural world. Every dog lover will be moved by this book. It's a lovely celebration of life--and death. This would be a perfect book to give a child who has lost a dog. Grieving adults will find comfort in it as well. Additionally, the book is a gentle introduction to Buddhist philosophy, without being overt or prosletyzing. A warning: if you're human, you'll cry as you finish it. But you'll smile as well.
