Got these for my 8 year old who is obsessed with playing Minecraft on his iPad and interested in coding. I started with the Jr. version ahead of the regular Scratch just because some other programs we’ve tried claim they’re for younger kids but end up frustrating him and me who doesn’t code and can’t help.The App, while free, by itself doesn’t give much instruction but with these cards it really shines. My son went through all of them one Saturday morning and by the end was capable and confident of creating his own creations.Highly recommended!

If you haven't used it before, Scratch is a programming environment for teaching kids. It's a real programming system with loops and conditionals, but it uses visual blocks rather than textual syntax, making it *far* easier for kids to learn. Recently the Scratch team created Scratch Jr, a simpler version for younger kids that runs on tablets like the iPad. One of the problems with Scratch and Scratch Jr is that once you have completed the in-app tutorials you are left to your imagination to come up with new things to build. Some kids need a bit more guidance. That's where No Starch Press' ScratchJr Coding Cards come in.These are actual physical cards, not a longer book, with one program or idea per card. For younger kids it's the perfect way to introduce them to the different concepts and tools inside Scratch Jr. My (then) 6yr old loved them. He was able to build little games and learn conditional logic quite easily.The set comes with 75 cards divided into three groups. The first 40 walk your child through a story about the Scratch kitten, programming everything to guide the character through his day. 20 cards cover different details of the programming interface, and 15 are unplugged screen free creative activities.When I tell parents about Scratch and Scratch Jr, they So what age are they for? That's tricky. It depends *entirely* on the particular child. My 6 loves math and science and reading, but getting him to sit down with the iPad and *not* play a game was a challenge when he was 5 (the recommended minimum age for Scratch Jr). It was only when he was about 6 that he got into it. He then sped through Scratch Jr thanks to the cards and has started to tackle Scratch. I think that some kids can do these card tasks on their own and others need parental encouragement. It depends entirely on your child's own nature.So, are Scratch Jr Coding Cards worth it? Yes!

Anthony Bourdain's book "Medium Raw" is an interesting series of diatribes on both Bourdain's life and the food service industry. It is laced with his characteristic writing style, including lots of profanity. Now I'm no prude, but there do seem to be times when his use of off-color language is too much. But if you've seen Bourdain on TV, or read about him, you won't be surprised with his language.The book itself has flashes of brilliance and periods of 'ho-hum'. Unfortunately, the sections detailing Bourdain's life (including his drug habit and his crazy girlfriend) aren't terribly interesting, and I found myself zooming through them to get to the good stuff. But some of the sections are sheer brilliance. The opening foreword, entitled "The Sit Down" includes a fascinating description of Bourdain's consumption of the ortolan - his prose when he describes how he eats this animal is vivid and brilliant. In the chapter entitled "Lust", Bourdain describes a bevy of culinary delights in an engaging and likewise vivid manner. After reading this chapter, I felt like I needed a cigarette!There is also a great section towards the end when Bourdain describes "Heroes and Villians" of the food industry. Interestingly, you may not know several of them, but you will enjoy reading his honest and blunt criticism (or adulation) of these very important members of the culinary community.Overall the book is enjoyable, but it goes from topic to topic without a lot of coherence. It almost seems like a collection of essays put together in one book, which are only minimally weaved together. It should give you some entertainment value, but only if you hang in there.If you like Anthony Bourdain and want to be entertained, go ahead and read this one. If you are looking for the inside stories behind conventional chefs and the food industry (including the Food Network), you're not going to find too much of that here.

I have to say from the onset that I have one very strong problem with this wonderful crazy iconoclastic brute. How can he cook, eat, criticize what he eats when he smokes! Now on his new show it seems he may have quit. I hope that's true. He mentioned in passing in one recent episode that he has Emphysema. He says a lot of things, and it could just have been Bourdain's so-dry-it-cracks-your-lips humor. I hope so. We need him around for a long time. Perhaps he just got a "scare", and that got him off the killer sticks. I've had a crush on him for years. From his first shows, where you can see him wanting to rattle the cages and forced to being "tame" and "good" (Cook's Tour), through his new reincarnation, part travel show, and all foodie stuff, he's become everyone's best friend. The curmudgeon who has the guts to say: "Harry Potter sucks and is too long", and "Wolfgang Puck is a Nazi and should be tried in the Hague, not opening up restaurants in Vegas!" (Note: these are just examples, I don't think Bourdain's has ever said either of these things!). I have found his fiction a bit tired, and some of his books "left over's" from shows, articles, and the such. This one travels back and forth, but his rage at least comes through. You stand with him here, and feel he's yelling at the cook, or the critic, or the man in the street who is naked and calls himself a cowboy. Few people write about food as he does, and for that we are thankful. Sadly, the greatest of all food writers, Calvin Trillin seems to have written himself out... food wise. Maybe he's said everything there is to say, or maybe tragically the loss of his beloved Alice has taken away his appetite. So we are now left with Bourdain. And like Calvin talking about Bryant's in Kansas, you have Bourdine talking about burgers and best of all, allowing us all to hate the horror that is Rachel Ray and all she stands for (basically Sarah Palin with a spatula). I "ate up" this book in one sitting, and felt wonderfully guilty, like eating all the walnut shrimp before company arrived. Buy it, eat it, and screw the guilt.

If you have read Bourdain's other books, you will speed through Medium Raw, enjoy every page, and likely even consider reading it again. If you have not read his other books, you will speed through Medium Raw, enjoy every page, and then purchase his previous books.There is a peculiar something about the dry, no-holds-barred style of Anthony Bourdain that sucks you in and makes you a fan. He effortlessly spews out (that is the best way to put it) brilliant descriptions and opinionated prose. Whether this is your first or fourth book by Bourdain, the style is a refreshing break from the otherwise repetitive, cliché-filled writing that dominates the culinary literature--a sad state poignantly highlighted in this book. It does not matter if he is describing his "villains and heroes" or just a favorite dish; Bourdain simply does so in such an offhand, easy manner that it is difficult to imagine any better way.As his fourth book, Medium Raw no longer relies on shock value to capture the reader. Rather, Bourdain appears to have changed as a person upon his daughter's birth and evolved as an author, as he describes in the book. The writing style is the same, if slightly improved, as Kitchen Confidential; yet, the writing in this book delves into more serious, relevant issues such as school nutrition, as opposed to whether or not "fish on Monday's" is a good idea.My only holdup when reading this book centered on the lack of a coherent theme. Rather than focus on a singular idea, Bourdain chose to shotgun his thoughts on a multitude of issues. While keeping the reading fresh and enjoyable, it made the book read more like standalone articles that were combined.Not only would I recommend this book, I would recommend the others that preceded it. This type of writing is exactly what the culinary world needed 10 years ago and still needs more of today. Medium Raw met or exceeded every expectation I had for Bourdain's latest.

Fascinating read about one person's adventures in traversing the old Silk Road. Most of the book is in a stream of consciousness mode of writing. The author has a myriad of factual details that enliven the account of his travels. In my humble opinion, the book is marred by very poor maps -- this may be due to my reading the book on a Kindle, which did not allow the maps to be expanded to the point where they could be useful. I wound up using my own Atlas to follow the route and found considerable differences between what the book was saying and what I could find in the atlas. At times this left me fairly frustrated in understanding the adventures.

I’m really enjoying this book. It’s not a page turner but it is very interesting. I keep my Nat Geo app handy to see the spaces traversed. I’ve been interested in that part of the world since reading Micheners “Carvan”, many years ago and Marco Polos journey ,(not as many years ago,) I think by Jennings. Alexander traveled it as well, and the trilogy on him, by Mary Renault, is fictionalized but the geography is not. My only regret is not having a hard cover copy the maps in the book are impossibe to see clearly in the Kindle edition, even with my lighted magnifier. Im guessing you can tell that I like history and maps.

Traveling areas that are so foreign to most of us, he describes with great detail the people and the history of the places along the way.This story appeals on so many levels. For those of us interested in history, archeology or religion, the author leaves something for us on every plate. The importance of the Silk Road in the history of commerce between East and West down through the ages is beautifully described here.But, we also have before us a story full of a rich history, lost empires, vanished people set in an area full of religious and ethnic strife that resonates for us today. The author knows this history, the people and the strife along the Silk Road’s long troubled past. The author takes us along for the journey and we are enriched for it.

Fascinating on many levels. Enormously informative about the history of Central Asia from antiquity to the present with particular insight into the impact of the Soviet incursion.Also a fascinating account of an intrepid persons attempt to understand this often impenetrable region. The descriptions of crumbling cultures in the face successive cultural invasions in the modern era are moving and beautifully written, The pace is sometimes somewhat ponderous but the story is powerful and entertaining.

A beautifully written, extremely well researched account of the author's travels along the ancient silk road from China to the Medterranean. I don't usually read travel books, but this was enthralling: from the historical research to his own adventures and encounters with people of many nationalities all along the way, Colin Thubron's touch is non judgemental, delicate and always interesting.

A remarkable book with all the juicy history, breathtaking descriptions of places and people and wonderful re-enactment of the time gone past. Everyone and anyone who wishes to know anything about Silk Road must have it.In hard cover and beautifully edited.

The author, amazingly travels from Xian to the Mediterranean. He makes the reader feel as if she is beside him all the way. The book makes me yearn to travel in his steps, even though I am 80 years old. I highly recommend this book!

Bill Walsh (1931–2007) is considered one of the greatest football coaches in NFL history. He is best known for serving as head coach of the San Francisco 49ers, during which time he popularized the West Coast offense, a style of play that emphasizes passing over running. Walsh was honored in 1993 with an election into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.Steve Jamison is America's foremost author and authority on the life and leadership of UCLA icon John Wooden, who is often cited as the greatest coach of the twentieth century. Together they collaborated on nine popular publications, including Wooden: A Lifetime of Observations and Reflections On and Off the Court. Mr. Jamison has also written books with other famous coaches, such as football’s Bill Walsh and tennis legend Brad Gilbert. In addition to his publishing and producing career, he is a popular speaker as well as executive producer of the John R. Wooden Leadership Course.Craig Walsh is the executive director of Santa Clara’s Healthy Kids program and a former marketing executive for the San Francisco 49ers. If you have seen the NFL Network's series, "A Football Life", you may have seen the 90-min special they did on Bill Walsh. The video documentary is EXCELLENT, and paints a compelling story of this fascinating and brilliant man. This book, in progress at the time of his death, was finished by his son with the help of Steve Jamison. Several of Walsh's players and friends add their own insights in this book, which add to the interest.Like all of Walsh's work, it's more a series of short essays, collected and sorted into manageable categories. They are based on the speeches he gave after retiring from coaching. Now, as a management system I don't think he says anything that Steven Covey and others haven't said. But if you have ever wondered if the guy was really as good as his fans claim, or why the Niners were the 2015 laughing stock of the NFL, all you need to do is read this book to understand:1) Yes, he really was as brilliant as his fans claim2) Yes, his burnout was inevitable; he cared too passionately, too intensely about perfection3) No, nobody in the current Niner organization even comes within ten Levi Stadiums' distance of Walsh' football expertise and management skills.Reading this, you understand that coaches like Mike Holmgren and Bill Belicheck are the real Walsh fans. Wow, what a great book. I don't know how I came across this book as I don't watch football and have never heard of Bill Walsh but I'm happy I did. His leadership approach to football is straightforward and applicable to a variety of professions. If I could summarize his philosophy it would be that success is the result of attention to detail, every minute detail.What you read about in this book is a man who poured his heart and soul into what he loved to do. This isn't some fluffy do x,y,z and you'll get there type of book. This is about showing the insane dedication, work, and sacrifice it takes to excel at what you do. What also stood out for me was the brutal self-honesty of his own shortcomings which is refreshing to read in a profession with many big egos.I recommend this to anyone looking to improve upon their approach to work and/or life.

That's the reason I love reading books from people who fought the battles themselves. Great lessons of how to build a great organization. As well as lessons of human nature. Warning of what happens when you have a boss: you eventually get disrespected or replaced. Great man with very human emotions we can all relate to and learn from. Highly recommend!

I love this book! As a huge football fan, I have though for years that football strategy, team culture, and playing the game itself has a correlation to both business and war. This book self proclaimed "philosophy of Leadership" is all about how to rally the troops in business and in life. There is no wonder why Bill Walsh was highly regarded for his business acumen. Bill very much understood how to tackle any tough situation and convince those around him to follow through and persevere until they accomplished their goals. This is a must read for any business owner, manager, or anybody who enjoys what really goes on in the office of an NFL head coach. I bought one for my business partner who doesn't even like football and he enjoyed it as well
