Fascinating read about one person's adventures in traversing the old Silk Road. Most of the book is in a stream of consciousness mode of writing. The author has a myriad of factual details that enliven the account of his travels. In my humble opinion, the book is marred by very poor maps -- this may be due to my reading the book on a Kindle, which did not allow the maps to be expanded to the point where they could be useful. I wound up using my own Atlas to follow the route and found considerable differences between what the book was saying and what I could find in the atlas. At times this left me fairly frustrated in understanding the adventures.
I’m really enjoying this book. It’s not a page turner but it is very interesting. I keep my Nat Geo app handy to see the spaces traversed. I’ve been interested in that part of the world since reading Micheners “Carvanâ€, many years ago and Marco Polos journey ,(not as many years ago,) I think by Jennings. Alexander traveled it as well, and the trilogy on him, by Mary Renault, is fictionalized but the geography is not. My only regret is not having a hard cover copy the maps in the book are impossibe to see clearly in the Kindle edition, even with my lighted magnifier. Im guessing you can tell that I like history and maps.

Traveling areas that are so foreign to most of us, he describes with great detail the people and the history of the places along the way.This story appeals on so many levels. For those of us interested in history, archeology or religion, the author leaves something for us on every plate. The importance of the Silk Road in the history of commerce between East and West down through the ages is beautifully described here.But, we also have before us a story full of a rich history, lost empires, vanished people set in an area full of religious and ethnic strife that resonates for us today. The author knows this history, the people and the strife along the Silk Road’s long troubled past. The author takes us along for the journey and we are enriched for it.
Fascinating on many levels. Enormously informative about the history of Central Asia from antiquity to the present with particular insight into the impact of the Soviet incursion.Also a fascinating account of an intrepid persons attempt to understand this often impenetrable region. The descriptions of crumbling cultures in the face successive cultural invasions in the modern era are moving and beautifully written, The pace is sometimes somewhat ponderous but the story is powerful and entertaining.
A beautifully written, extremely well researched account of the author's travels along the ancient silk road from China to the Medterranean. I don't usually read travel books, but this was enthralling: from the historical research to his own adventures and encounters with people of many nationalities all along the way, Colin Thubron's touch is non judgemental, delicate and always interesting.
A remarkable book with all the juicy history, breathtaking descriptions of places and people and wonderful re-enactment of the time gone past. Everyone and anyone who wishes to know anything about Silk Road must have it.In hard cover and beautifully edited.
The author, amazingly travels from Xian to the Mediterranean. He makes the reader feel as if she is beside him all the way. The book makes me yearn to travel in his steps, even though I am 80 years old. I highly recommend this book!

SHADOW OF THE SILK ROAD certainly qualifies in the last category.Here, Thubron retraces the ancient trading route, the Silk Road, roughly 7,000 miles from Xian in central China west across that country's vastness on a path between the mountains of Tibet and the deserts to the north to Kyrgyzstan, then through Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Afghanistan, Iran and Turkey, finishing at the ancient, ruined port of Seleucia Pierea on the Mediterranean.Thubron has traveled this road before in The Silk Road: Beyond the Celestial Kingdom and The Lost Heart of Asia (P.S.). Colin takes this latest journey in the years 2003-2004. His love for the lands he traverses - more specifically, an affection for their histories, perhaps - shows in the tenor of his narrative, which approaches journalistic reporting and which, while never humorous, at times is almost lyrical."Outside (his hotel room in vaguely menacing Maimana, Afghanistan) there was no sound but the scraping of the pine trees in the wind. Danger was cumulative, of course, it crept up step by step half-noticed as your journey took you deeper, farther. Until you woke up at night in a place beyond help."SHADOW OF THE SILK ROAD includes 4 useful maps depicting Colin's route. A photo section would have been most welcome, but it's the infrequent travel essay that includes such so I've ceased expecting one. Indeed, the absence of a camera in the author's possession eased his way through at least one tense border crossing.Periodically in the text, Thubron engages in a mental conversation with an imaginary Sogdian trader of old. Drifting towards sleep in his Antioch hotel room near the last stop of his journey, Colin's fantasy travel companion gives voice to an inner truth which perhaps had relevance when the author wrote the book, at which time he was in his mid-60s:"At first, when you're young, each place you come to is poorer than the place ahead, which you do not yet know. The other is extraordinary, beautiful. So you go on, perhaps for many years. You go on until you realize that the trading was also good, with certain shortcomings, in the city you left behind. Soon younger men say you have lost ambition; older, that you have grown wiser. Then, as you settle, there is comfort, and a kind of sadness."Thubron turned seventy in June of this year. I wonder if he has found comfort. In any case, to the author honor is due for the expeditions of discovery on which he has served as our consummate guide.Note: This review is of the Vintage paperback edition (2007).
