this was amazing wanted it to not stop.....many surprises along the way...characters are strong and intertwined...great book...

I loved this book and left a review of 5 stars in May, 2013. When this popped up and I went to the Kindle page, Amazon did not warn me that I had bought this book already. It sounded familiar, so I checked "Manage Your Content and Devices" and found that I had already bought it. This has a different cover, but it is the same title and author. I just want to warn anyone who moves too quickly and buys this that you could already have bought it and Amazon will sell it to you again. But the book: I loved the story-line, wonderful characters, based on history. I highly recommend this book.

Flora Solomon's "A Pledge of Silence" is a very captivating book. It is obvious that the author spent an incredible amount of time and research to make the book not only pleasurable to read but true to history. The characters are engaging and you are drawn into their lives and plight. For those of us that never realized the role nurses played in World War II, not only for their medical contribution in caring for the wounded, but for the horrible suffering they endured, "A Pledge of Silence" is a shocking eye opener. If I am not mistaken, this is Ms. Solomon's first book, but you would think her an experienced and seasoned writer. You find yourself being artfully transported into the interment camps where you experience the pain, suffering, and despair of the nurses who gave so unselfishly, many making the ultimate sacrifice. I applaud the author for recognizing the contribution these nurses made to the war effort while providing the reader with an engaging, captivating and highly recommendable read.

This is a detail-driven saga of a WWII nurse caught up in the war in the Pacific, enduring what cannot be endured and coping with her survival. The author shows a researcher's love of the subject, paces the story well, and keeps the reader's attention throughout. Before sitting down to write this review I thought of the words to best describe this book. It has romantic elements as the men in nurse Margie's life love her, leave her, hurt her, and help her, but is certainly more than a historical romance. It is a saga in that it is a rich story that moves across Margie's lifespan. It is nearly a memoir, although it is fiction, of the Pacific war. The book is all that and more; a rich, engrossing story to shock you, pull at your heartstrings, and recommend to all.The writing is direct and clean and the book, although heavy on description, moves along smoothly. The main character, Margie, is likable as she grows from innocent school girl to student, to restless adult, to army nurse, and at last a mother. Overall, the character development is excellent and her situation resonates at every plot milestone.Underscoring the excellence of the research that went into this book, the author includes a note regarding resources on the topic of nurses in the Pacific during WWII.

Five Stars!!!Well that was some book, I thought it was a very thoughtful and well adapted description of war in the Philippines. There are so many stories about World War II but this one will stick with me for some time I think. I really enjoyed what followed after the war how Margie suffered from the trauma and how she slowly revealed in the end, that which she had kept hidden for so long that generation, was really good about secrets I know that from experience and most of them took those bad experiences with them to their graves I’m glad the author choose to have Margie share her secrets with her children. Excellent book I’ll probably reread this one to my wife I’m sure she will enjoy it as I’m sure anyone who picks this up to read will find it has a depth and spirit that is remarkable and unusable deep.

This book has a very interesting storyline. It's main character is a young woman coming of age shortly before WWII. She goes through nursing school, and ends up posted by the Red Cross in Manila before the Japanese declare war on the USA. The rather glamorous pre-war life in the "Pearl of the Orient" is charmingly described. The Phillipines are then taken by Japan, and a large group of civilians are kept prisoner in a brutal camp reminiscent of a Nazi concentration camp, on starvation rations of food. She naturally emerges from this a changed person, tortured by the memories of lives and loves lost. Her challenge is to find a way back to some sort of normalcy, and to resolve the trauma of those years. Thus, there is a powerful and touching storyline. However, the writing style is rather simplistic, and despite the horrible events and psychological trauma described, there is an odd superficiality and naivete to it. Obviously, I have mixed feelings about the book. Individuals who are interested in the period and the events of WWII would definitely enjoy this book.

And my World War II fascination continues on with A PLEDGE OF SILENCE.This was a very unique and different look at WWII: through the eyes of the nurses and women who were involved in the war. The book is a fictional story, but was taken from real life events from WWII, primarily the internees held captive at Santo Tomas in the Philippines, by Japanese soldiers.Margie Bauer is the protagonist of the story and we follow her from her pre-war days, all the way until she is in her 80's and still struggling with the hardships and dark secrets from the war.I loved that this book went past the war. Most of the books I have been reading lately about WWII stop when the war was over, but this one really shows the after affects that people suffered from PTSD and we follow the rest of Margie's life and how she was affected. This was a fantastically written book that I recommend to anyone that's in WWII books, or just a great drama in general. I give this one a 5/5!
