Snap – Making The Most Of First Impressions, Body Language & Charisma by Patti Wood is a top-down analysis of the subject of body language. The author conveys countless useful tools individuals can use to ascertain how people are feeling. One of these aspects Wood focuses on rather trenchantly is nonverbal cues that individuals displace which showcase what type of emotions they are feeling.Other notable points that the author delves into range from the importance of posture, handshakes, the depths of eyes, the positioning of feet, to hand positions, smiles, and much, much more. The author does a stellar job of showing why attention to these key areas of the human body is vital.Example after example, the author gives various anecdotes, some personal, many not, of instances where the reader is able to glean the data she provides playing out in a ‘classic’ way. These are very helpful, and for me helped bring forth past memories of scenarios of myself of others going through rather similar situations. All in all, the book is straight forward to understand, and its concepts are easy to learn/apply.This well-rounded analysis into human bodily behaviour should be highly regarded and sought after by all individuals. After all, a well rounded approach to interpreting body cues is useful for most if not all people. It would be a straightforward way to increasing an your repertoire.Kindest Regards,Zy MarquiezTheBreakaway.wordpress.com

I have read several books and have studied body language for quite some time. I was expecting a lot of repeat information when I started this book. I was surprised that in reading this book I was both entertained and pepped up about the framework in which the information was presented. You can tell that she is an experienced public speaker and consultant - because she presents the information well, of course because she has had to do so in public speaking and consulting.Snaps, open windows, "feel, show say" - these are all easily understood concepts that are easily applied.I am recommending this book to anyone who has a desire or need to place themselves before a public or new people. It will help you with your body language in such a way as to let your true self shine, and make others feel comfortable, and confident with you and the interaction.

All this book needs is a mirror to bring the message home. Right on target. Body language is the key. If you don't read the entire book, be sure to let every word soak in when it comes to body language and its association to first impressions.

In SNAP, Patti Wood gives clear, usable advice about how we form first impressions of others and how others form their first impressions of us. As a public speaking instructor in a 4-year college, I find her logical explanations very helpful. She gives students valuable insight into ways they can work to make their own first impressions more favorable. Her emphasis is on nonverbal behavior, the aspect of public speaking some students find difficult to manage as they make presentations. I will use Patti Wood's explanantion of charisma in Chapter Two in future classes. In fact, I am seriously considering making SNAP a required text.

Interesting information some new some not, but only fair writing. I am having trouble finishing the book. Disappointing because it is not a particularly long book. I have always been interested in the messages that we send through our body language and through other methods of communication and this is a good review of some of the pretty well known but often forgotten concepts.

First impressions matter more than most of us realize and this book helps with better awareness on how you may be unknowingly affected by the body language of others. Wood effectively uses stories to illustrate her points so the book is an easy read but she also includes source documentation for claims she makes. Shaded areas (sidebars) provide additional insight and useful tips.People are very emotional animals and those emotions insure our survival by communicating quickly with others our true intent. She includes background information and a lively discussion on all this. A very interesting read. The book will get me to think about my own first impressions upon meeting new people: what I like, dislike and what I am reacting to .I look forward to seeing one of Wood's presentations live. I see her occasionally in the media when she is asked to analyze the body language of politicians, celebs, or newsmakers and she is a dynamic and engaging speaker.I followed her recommendation to check out the website www.snapfirstimpressions.com and recommend other readers do so because the site provides additional information

My husband formerly worked in a field that employed the type of information covered in this book, and he was truly impressed by the accuracy of its content. This is a worthwhile purchase, both for judging your impressions of others and for honing the first impression you present, personally, to the world.

Good topic, good tips, sound rationale and a great addition to any reader's library however, Patti Wood could use some coaching on making her writing style more concise. The content is excellent but does not warrant repeating and rehashing several times in every chapter. Saying it once is usually enough for the average reader.

Excellent insight into the mind of a pioneering sailor. Includes lots of technical details but also views into his state of mind and the near insanity that many solo circumnavigators flirt with. Also good insights into blue water cruising of 50 years ago. Appendix is a dry listing of methods of sailing, of which maybe 30% are irrelevant today so you can decide whether to skip that or not.

I have read a number of nautical tales written by or about sailors who went around the world either in races or just for the challenge or interests of it, beginning with they were you the original one by Captain Joshua Slocum – sailing around the world alone. The thing that sets Moitessier apart is that he was a sailor first with an almost mystic connection with the ocean and his craft whereas others, I exclude Slocum, were adventurers first and true sailors second. In his account he never seemed to have been pressured to hurry, rather he maintained a rational and relaxed Pace with an emphasis on not making mistakes. Hence he finished well above else and in joy himself so much apparently they decided not to pick up the prize which he had won, handily, electing instead to stay on the ocean for another 10 or 12,000 miles. For anyone interested in sailing, there is a long section at the back of the book of advice and explanations of sailing lower, about equipment and every other important aspect that a knowledgeable sailor should understand.

Bernard the mystic! I enjoyed this! you get a cursorial look at his sailing log...and a whole lot of his thought streaming. The little turd throws a heap of non biodegradable 'stuff' into the sea he loves so much..which I found hypocritical after his bemoaning of nature and the environment's decline at our hands - weird! But I love that he thrives alone...there is something in that for all those who struggle with solitariness...oh yeah..and he writes well enough to keep it flowing.

It's occasionally difficult to remember that Moitessier's memoir of the first Golden Globe singlehanded sail circumnavigation back in 1968 even concerns a race. From the outset, Moitessier enraptures himself and enraptures the reader in a tale of man alone finding his own inner compass. Virtually all prose-poem, THE LONG WAY skitters off the edge of the mundane into a realm of sometimes numinous interior dialogue, but it holds the reader's attention throughout.Moitessier entered the Round The World Race presumably to win, but he spends far more time communing with the seabirds and listening to the wave patterns on his boat, JOSHUA's hull than in dedicated yacht racing. In the end, Moitessier decided not to sail back to his starting point, but went on to Tahiti on the next step of his inner voyage.THE LONG WAY is particularly interesting to read in juxtaposition with THE STRANGE LAST VOYAGE OF DONALD CROWHURST (Crowhurst went mad and simply stepped off his boat into the sea), and Robin Knox-Johnston's A WORLD OF MY OWN. Johnston prosaically suffered the miseries of a diet of canned bully beef, and a constant nervous but impeccably British Imperial xenophobic dread of how "The Frog" was doing. He wanted to be the winner, and was. It's clear that Moitessier could have cared less what Knox-Johnston or the others were doing. JOSHUA is his private garden, and he invites us in to sample its mysteries. His Zen-like approach is more understandable when one realizes that he was French in parentage but raised in Indochina. A calm, accepting Buddhist tone glows throughout this book. If indeed Moitessier went mad (as some say he did) his madness was a doorway to spiritual peace, and not, like Crowhurst's, to sorrow and death.Moitessier takes us THE LONG WAY toward beauty, value, and the validation of ourselves in what is, after all, a vast and playful universe.

As a sailor I really enjoyed the book. I won't speculate on how a non-sailor might take to it. It is a fun way to learn more about how this kind of adventure was approached during this period. Many things have changed, especially with respect to the environment. While he clearly has nothing but respect for his environment some of his actions are typical of the time and can't be judged by our views today. It is far more than a simple log of his journey. His accomplishments are made even more amazing by his apparent lack of concern for them being just that.

When I got it in the mail my feeling was: "Finally the epic book by B. Moitessier!" After reading it I can only say that it is a disappointment, not by the story itself, but rather by the narrative style of the late Mr. Moitessier which, to my taste, was immensely boring. Each and every event narrated is enveloped in poetic digressions about his youth or some other reminescence, in what turns out as a crude attempt at erudition. Add to that the fact that I'm not a francophile and the outcome couldn't be different. However, I can see this book appealing to many readers, who are more willing to read about a man's "personal journey", rather than a "round-the-world sailing book".

Inspiring and lyrical account that combines spirituality and sailing. Reminds me of zen and the art of motorcycle maintenance. Enjoy!

If you love Chinese takeout and like to cook you are going to like this book. There is one major fault with this book and that is tons of typos. Spacing of words is a major pain. You are going to have to read each recipe and make corrections on the directions. The recipes are fine the editing is not.I would guess that whoever proof read this book did not get paid.

Will be trying to cook some recipes from here...I love Chinese food...do not like the prices at least not in my area. We are very limited so very expensive. Can't wait to try the Beef Broccoli. Kung Pao Chicken. Egg Rolls. Egg Drop Soup. Yummy!!

Lots of yummy recipes that you will love just as much as you love to get at your favorite Chinese restaurants!!

easy to make take out

great wedding present for people who like to eat Chinese food.

Good and easy to follow recepies. Love this book.

Some real good recipes!

Chapter 1 Thirteen-year-old Long limped along the Shanghai Fight Club tunnel, a river of blood flowing down his right thigh, the weight of a nation on his shoulders. He glanced at the crimson liquid oozing from his bandaged leg, and the steady stream leaking from his upper left arm. So much for winning the Fight Club Grand Championship. Previous champions had earned themselves prime positions within the Emperor’s military ranks. Long had earned himself a target on his head. Balanced across Long’s powerful shoulders was the unconscious giant of a man known as Xie—the Scorpion. Xie had been the Emperor’s personal bodyguard, but as of a quarter of an hour ago, he was, like Long, a fugitive. Long had to keep moving. Soldiers would surely be racing after them, following the directions of the new Southern Warlord—Tonglong, the Mantis. However, Long had no time to consider them or their whereabouts. He had a more pressing matter to deal with. He needed to lower his pulse. If he kept going at this pace, his racing heart would soon pump his body dry. Long—the Dragon—began a breathing sequence that would decrease his heart rate in order to slow his blood flow. Two short breaths in, one long one out. He felt a difference immediately. He continued along the tunnel’s dirt floor, but a stirring sensation in his dan tien—his chi center—brought a sudden sense of dread. His lower abdomen began to warm and his intestines started writhing like a ball of snakes. Someone was coming. “Golden Dragon?” a tiny voice whispered from down the dark corridor behind him. “Long? Are you there?” Long stopped and frowned. It was ShaoShu—Little Mouse. ShaoShu had used Long’s fight club name: Golden Dragon. Long turned and watched the small boy with the unusually limber body scamper toward him from the direction he had come from. “Turn back, ShaoShu,” Long whispered. “Return to Tonglong. You will not be safe with me.” “I don’t care,” ShaoShu replied. “I want to help. You’re injured and— Hey!” he squeaked, pointing at Xie. “Xie is alive! His arm just moved. How can that be? I watched Tonglong shoot him in the chest.” “Xie is wearing battle armor beneath his robe,” Long said. “The shock from Tonglong’s bullet just knocked him out. He probably has a cracked rib or two, but that’s it. He should be fine once he wakes up.” ShaoShu stared at Long’s bulging arms and thick chest. “You’re carrying him and battle armor? You’re barely a man. How did you get so strong?” “Exercise,” Long replied. “Now shoo.” “But I can help,” ShaoShu said. “Did you see what happened back there with the Emperor and Tonglong? You can’t do this alone.” “I saw,” Long said. “Tonglong killed Xie’s father—the Western Warlord. He also killed his own mother, AnGangseh. He’s crazy, but he has managed to put himself in a position to kidnap the Emperor, and that makes him dangerous and powerful.” “Crazy is right,” ShaoShu said. “He will kill you, too, if you’re caught. Why are you carrying Xie around? Just leave him. He’s always been mean to you.” “If my temple brothers and sisters are to have any chance of stopping Tonglong from taking over the country, we are going to need Xie’s help. He is still a very powerful man. In fact, he is the Western Warlord now. He—” Long stopped in midsentence as he saw ShaoShu’s body go rigid and his nose twitch. “Uh-oh,” ShaoShu said. Long focused his attention down the dark fight club tunnel beyond ShaoShu, and his dan tien began to twist and turn. More people were coming. “Listen,” Long whispered to ShaoShu. “You must either return to Tonglong right now or escape on your own. You can’t stay with me.” “What are you going to do?” “I will get Xie to safety, then I will rendezvous with my brothers and sister far to the north. Now go.” Long whirled around to leave, but his foot slipped in a pool of his own blood. He lost his balance, and Xie’s gigantic body shifted across his shoulders, dragging him to one side. His injured leg collapsed, and he went down. Xie’s head bounced off the tunnel wall, the impact waking him instantly. Xie sat up, fully alert, like a seasoned fighter who had been knocked out only to wake up swinging. “What is going on?” Xie demanded, staggering to his feet. He tottered, then centered himself and stood solid as a mountain. He rubbed his head with one hand and felt the dent in his chest plate with the other. “We’re being hunted,” Long said. He watched as first recognition and then memory flowed behind Xie’s eyes. Xie growled and glared back up the tunnel. Long spun around to see two soldiers approaching, one tall and one short. Each held a cocked pistol. The soldiers stopped just out of Long’s and Xie’s reach. The taller of the two cleared his throat. “Our apologies, sir,” the taller soldier said to Xie, “but you are under arrest. Southern Warlord Tonglong has ordered us to capture you, as well as Golden Dragon. Both of you, please come with us and maintain a reasonable distance. Our orders are to take you dead or alive. We will not hesitate to shoot either of you if you come too close or attempt to flee.” Long’s heart sank. In a traditional scuffle they might stand a chance, but against firearms combined with a short distance, all the kung fu skills on the planet would not help. He looked over to see ShaoShu’s reaction, but ShaoShu was gone.

My youngest child bounces off of walls, and usually into something, often a brother or sister! He didn't take to reading like my other 2, but these stories ah..... they did it. Ever sense these books, he has been reading more books for fun. He could read before, but he didn't have the pleasure in it.Each book focuses on a different character in the group. It is full of action without being too simple. It develops interactions between people and has them over come difficulties, Each character learns not only their weakness, but their strength. And in the fact it is a group, the author reveals all the strengths possible, even ones that don't seem strong. I speak to nobility and character, not for vain glory, but because there is a need ..... and they can answer that need.(Reading is so wonderful. It teaches patience or extreme perseverance when just can't put the book down! LOL)

My 11-year old enjoyed all the books in the series. Finished them all in very quick time. Now his younger sister has got her teeth into them after hearing him rave about the books. For any parents out there trying to get their children to read over the summer, this series would be a good choice. This review is for all the books in the series.

My middle schooler loves this series of books! He and his friends all compare which book they currently have finished. The adventure get told a little in each book from the point of view of this book's main character. Some overlap between books so it's important to read them in order!

My 10 year old son has read this series very quickly. Absolutely loved it and now looking for more from this author. Highly recommend for boys 9-12 years.

The book is in excellent condition. The cover illustration is great. The embossed book jacket is beautiful. I am glad I was able to purchase this hardcover at a discount.

My 10 year old daughter loves this series so much! It was great to be able to get it for her since requesting it thru the library took so long!

I've read this whole series. I am twelve and I love this book series so much. It is most definitely not a childish series but there is no swearing or any of that stuff.

My daughter could not put this series down. She loved reading these books and couldn't wait to get to the next! Wonderful series!

My son was diagnosed with ASD in January 2012 and it took us 3 years to put all the "pieces" together to get where we are today. Many of that 3 years of exploration, failure and discovery could have been reduced in duration if we had access to Dr. Pizant's book.So many therapists (both in school and private operations) don't "get it". They focus on the deficits and "extinguishing behaviors" when they should be asking "why is that behavior present"? My wife and I finally figured much of it out after trying therapy after therapy and enduring years of meltdowns and stress. The "answers" for our son were1) Our son has sensory over-responsivity. Parties, amusement parks, recess are all massively over-stimulating and stressful. We don't avoid these things but know he can handle only a few hours.2) He has some challenges reading and absolutely hated to do it UNTIL we discovered how to use his "enthusiasms" e.g. Star Wars, Minecraft, World War 2, to get his engagement3) He can relate better to folks if they meet him in "his world" - from there he comes to trust you and is willing to enter your world. We just finished a two-week trip to Europe where we employed lots of sensory supports (e.g. ear muffs), using a rental car rather than public transportation (which is loud, somewhat 'unpredictable' and out of our control), we alternated "big" sensory days (e.g. amusement parks) with "low" sensory days - watching TV and going to the pool. And he had NOT ONE meltdown. We had to discover all of these strategies by ourselves largely.Having more folks like Dr. Prizant we could have discovered these strategies MUCH earlier. My one suggestion is that the book seems to under-estimate the effort that comes with convincing (often intransigent and overworked) schools to try new approaches. That more than anything was the most stressful part of the journey - because that's where our son receives the most "therapy" time. And if you can't get those changes done you have to either move schools, move district or home-school. In the end, the school system we attended could not put him in a smaller classroom with peers so we had to involve a professional advocate and lawyers to get an outplacement.Sometimes you can be "positive" minded as much as you want but the school administration needs to know you will do all you can to get what your child needs. That said, I plan to buy three or four copies for many of the autism therapists in our world. If everyone could adopt Dr. Prizant's viewpoint I think special needs educators would achieve massive improvements in results and parent's lives could become much less stressed and uncertain.

I needed this book more than I even knew. My son was diagnosed with autism on March 8th this year, and I was basically grabbing desperately for any support/information/resources I could. I was suddenly hit with the reality that all these autism support groups I joined on FB were full of people making other people feel horrible, or endlessly talking about how horrible this was going to be for us, or how the therapies we wanted to explore were a waste of our time. It was truly devastating to a mom who just had this diagnosis confirmed. I didn't believe any of what I was reading, and I refused to believe that my husband and I were the only ones who wanted to find the positive, beautiful, unique parts of autism.I am so grateful I came across this book. It literally was exactly what I needed at just the right time. I have told everyone in my family how important it is to me that they get themselves a copy and read it. I have told my son's OT, ST and ABA therapists how much this has impacted me positively and how it really helped me see things from a much needed perspective. I loved every single sentence in this and I cannot recommend this book enough to ANYONE who wants some refreshing insight into ASD. Thank you so much for writing this. This book came into my life at exactly the right moment and I will use everything I've learned in this writing as much as humanly possible.

"Uniquely Human" is by far the most beautiful and sensitive book about autism I have ever read and way overdo! Hopefully more and more people will "get it" as a result of reading this book and individuals on the spectrum will be treated with the dignity and respect they deserve!!Maria Teresa Guanabara (parent of Justin Canha, young adult with autism, whose journey is mentioned in this fabulous book)

A must read. I was so lost before I found this book but it's changed my perspective and I'm so thankful. I'm appreciating my son now for who he is and not worried about "fixing" or "saving" him from autism. I love his enthusiasms! This book has helped me shift my perspective to see things differently. I'm happier and more importantly, my son seems happier, since I've started reading this.

I ordered this book with some reluctance- the previous reviews were so overwhelmingly positive that I was suspicious- I thought most of them might be friends of the author (like another autism book that I recently read). But I'm happy to report the hype is justified. This is truly an insightful, compassionate book about autism and it will forever change the way you view those on the spectrum. One caveat is that it's solely about conventional behavioral therapy. Parents of more severe cases should also look at alternative treatments as well (there are even some drugs that may dramatically help some individuals).

An excellent read for anyone who has a child with Autism in their life. This book was amazing at putting into words the experiences of people with Autism and those who care for and interact with them. It is encouraging, informative, lighthearted and has a broad scope of information and practical insights. The best part of this book is helping people who do not have Autism to see the world through the eyes of people who do.My only and (MINIMAL) criticism is to say that the overarching theme is for people without Autism to change and adapt to understand and work with people who have Autism. While this is true, I think its important to stress this is a 2-way street. We all need to adapt to meet one another where we are, both people with/without Autism.

Review

“Towering and intrepid. . . . Atwood does Orwell one better.” —The New Yorker“Atwood has long since established herself as one of the best writers in English today, but Oryx and Crake may well be her best work yet. . . . Brilliant, provocative, sumptuous and downright terrifying.” —The Baltimore Sun“Her shuddering post-apocalyptic vision of the world . . . summons up echoes of George Orwell, Anthony Burgess and Aldous Huxley. . . . Oryx and Crake [is] in the forefront of visionary fiction.” —The Seattle Times“A book too marvelous to miss.” —The San Diego Union-Tribune“Majestic. . . . Keeps us on the edges of our seats.” —The Washington Post“A compelling futuristic vision. . . . Oryx and Crake carries itself with a refreshing lightness. . . . Its shrewd pacing neatly balances action and exposition. . . . What gives the book a deeper resonance is its humanity.” –Newsday“[A] stunning new novel–possibly her best since The Handmaid’s Tale.” –Time Out New York“A delightful amalgam for the sophisticated reader: her perfectly placed prose, poetic language and tongue-in-cheek tone are ubiquitous throughout, as if an enchanted nanny is telling one a dark bedtime story of alienation and ruin while lovingly stroking one’s head.” –Ms.“Truly remarkable. . . . As fun as it is dark. . . . A feast of realism, science fiction, satire, elegy and then some. . . . Atwood has concocted here an all-too-possible vision. . . . [She is] a master.” –The News & Observer (Raleigh, North Carolina)“A roll of dry, black, parodic laughter. . . . One of the year’s most surprising novels.” –The Economist“Sublime. . . . Good, solid, Swiftian science fiction from a . . . literary artist par excellence.” –The Denver Post“Dances with energy and sophisticated gallows humor. . . . [Atwood’s] wry wit makes dystopia fun.” –People“A crackling read. . . . Atwood is one of the most impressively ambitious writers of our time.” –The Guardian“Gorgeously written, full of eyeball-smacking images and riveting social and scientific commentary. . . . A cunning and engrossing book by one of the great masters of the form.” –The Buffalo News“A powerful vision. . . . Very readable.” –The New York Times Book Review“Brilliant, impossible to put down. . . . Atwood . . . is at once commanding and enchanting. Piercingly intelligent and piquantly witty, highly imaginative and unfailingly compassionate, she is a spoonful-of-sugar storyteller, concealing the strong and necessary medicine of her stinging social commentary within the balm of dazzlingly complicated and compelling characters and intricate and involving predicaments.” –The Atlanta Journal-Constitution“Original and chilling. . . . Powerful, inventive, playful and difficult to resist.” –Pittsburgh Post-Gazette“Brilliantly constructed. . . . Jimmy and Crake grip like characters out of Greek tragedy. . . . Atwood herself is one of our finest linguistic engineers. Her carefully calibrated sentences are formulated to hook and paralyse the reader.” –The Daily Telegraph“Atwood does not disappoint.” –The Dallas Morning News“Gripping. . . . Bursts with invention and mordant wit, none of which slows down its headlong pace. . . . Atwood is in sleek form. . . . [Her] prescience is unsettling.” –St. Petersburg Times“Biting, black humor and absorbing storytelling. . . . Atwood entices.” –USA Today“Compelling. . . . Packed with fascinating ideas. . . . Her most accessible book in years, a gripping, unadorned story.” –The Onion“This superlatively gripping and remarkably imagined book joins The Handmaid’s Tale in the distinguished company of novels (The Time Machine, Brave New World and 1984) that look ahead to warn us about the results of human shortsightedness.” –The Times (London)“Absorbing. . . . Atwood ahs not lost her touch for following the darker paths of speculative fiction–she easily creates a believable, contained future world.” –Seattle Weekly“Engrossing. . . . A novel of ideas, narrated with an almost scientific dispassion and a caustic, distanced humor. The prose is fast and clean.” –Rocky Mountain News“Riveting and thought-provoking. . . . Keen and cutting. . . . [Atwood] has grown into one of the most consistently imaginative and masterful fiction writers writing in English today.” –Richmond Times-Dispatch

From the Inside Flap

With the same stunning blend of prophecy and social satire she brought to her classic The Handmaid’s Tale, Margaret Atwood gives us a keenly prescient novel about the future of humanity—and its present. Humanity here equals Snowman, and in Snowman’s recollections Atwood re-creates a time much like our own, when a boy named Jimmy loved an elusive, damaged girl called Oryx and a sardonic genius called Crake. But now Snowman is alone, and as we learn why we also learn about a world that could become ours one day.

When Oryx and Crake first opens, the reader meets the narrator (Snowman) and is immediately aware that there has been a disaster of gigantic proportions. The information about Snowman's past and this event trickle slowly, through his reflections and memories, at first more tantalizing and mysterious than informational and explanatory. By the time Oryx and Crake is finished, everything has become crystal clear for the reader, through a delightful process of hints, deductions and knowledge told outright, and then Atwood laughs at the self-satisfied reader with yet another conundrum as it ends. If you have read The Handmaid's Tale then you are familiar with this particular delicious style of Atwood's. Oryx and Crake delivers a fully satisfying, if often unsettling, reading experience.Margaret AtwoodI can't say that I "enjoyed" all of the novel, as the pre-apocalyptic world of Oryx and Crake is one not so much an alternate reality but a possible future was unnerving to me. Kiddie porn sites and snuff films are common viewing material for even young teens. The division between classes has become such that the elite live in guarded compounds which are like small cities. Personal freedoms have been lost, or more accurately, cheerfully given up; scientific discovery, often frightening and unnatural, has become the most important advancement for society. Probably the scariest part of the book is the close resemblance to our current society, and the question that poses of just how easy would it be to find ourselves in that situation, led their by the banner of "progress".Oryx and Crake is a thrilling, terrifying and often uncomfortable read. It is not for the faint of heart or apathetic of mind, but makes excellent material for much thought and discussion.

This novel, the first in Margaret Atwood's dystopian trilogy, is a fascinating, dark and thought-provoking ride. Perhaps overshadowing the story itself, Atwood's world forces the reader into tremendous moral reflection. We are made to question the nature of exploitation, the meaning of social consent and whether effort for the greater good can ever be divorced from emotional self-interest. In terms of bigger picture message, if not story, the first book reminds me of Hugh Howey's mesmerizing Wool series. The story centers around Jimmy, also called Snowman, assumed to be the lone survivor of a plague that destroyed humanity. His companions are Crakers: a society of unworldly humanoid experiments designed to eliminate the perceived flaws of normal homo sapiens. The Crakers see Snowman as a relic and link to the "before" times as well as their source of knowledge about their creator, Crake. Jimmy has given the Crakers an origin story, that while false, is something he feels they can mentally grasp. The enigmatic Oryx is the novel's most interesting character primarily because she is so difficult to understand. She is the love interest to both Jimmy (Snowman) and Crake.Atwood, an avid environmentalist, creates a believable world where climate change accelerates with cataclysmic consequences; changing the nature of agriculture and livestock production, flooding major cities and changing the weather. To compensate, society evolves into a two-tiered structure where scientists and thought-workers segregate themselves into highly secure compounds while the remainder of humanity fend for themselves in decaying, crime-ridden "plebelands". The scientists, working for global corporations, create increasingly bizarre animal and plant hybrids for food in addition to rejuvenation products that increase lifespan and beauty for those who can afford them. The novel is, overall, an excellent one and well worth the read. The characters are well-developed and fascinating though almost uniformly difficult to like. Many elements of the story are gut-wrenchingly plausible and Atwood masterfully manages to ruin your sleep at night. One leaves the tale of Oryx and Crake with little hope for the future of humanity. Too many genies, it seems, are already out of the bottle. It's possible to nitpick some of the story's futuristic elements. For example, published in 2003, it's difficult to see how Atwood couldn't see the coming of smart phones and electronic documents. Jimmy, searching for a job, is somehow snail mailing his paper resume to prospective employers. And another nit, as a former marketer, I found nearly all of the product names things that would have been mercilessly ridiculed at any ad meeting. Atwood seems in love with cheesy rhymes and putting "oo" in everything (Anooyoo, Soy Oh-Boy, pigoons).Still, world-building is hard, and you have to cut the author some slack. After all, we let Suzanne Collins get away with never explaining how and why the Hunger Games world is like that. Whether or not you will like Oryx and Crake really depends on your feelings about apocalyptic fiction. I tend to rate this type of fiction on whether the author made me think and creeped me out. This novel will definitely do both of those things.

"Oryx and Crake" is a magnificent work of literary science fiction and Postmodernist criticism. Atwood creates a dystopia vision referencing Gore Vidal's "Kalki" and Capek's "R.U.R" combined with William Gibson's dark perspective of Late Capitalism run amok. It is also an homage to the beauty of vocabulary and its essentialness to human culture:"He compiled lists of old words too - words of a precision and suggestiveness that no longer had a meaningful application in today's world...He memorized these hoary locutions, tossed them left-handed into conversations: wheelwright, lodestone saturnine, adamant. He'd developed a strangely tender feeling towards such words, as if they were children abandoned in the woods and it was his duty to rescue them."This love of the lost and abandoned is, however, not limited to words but also the dispossessed people inhabiting Atwood's world. It is most forcibly projected upon the character of Oryx, a woman so commoditized by the world that she doesn't know her nationality or mother tongue anymore. She has spent her life since childhood as a sex toy for Western consumption.Atwood creates her own version of Pasolini's "Salo" in Oryx' journey through life, one just as bitter and unavoidable as the Italian auteur's. Margaret brings viscerally to life the child bordellos of Thailand, the Italian countryside littered with Nigerian prostitutes, the smorgasbord of Dubai whorehouses, the pervasive presence of Eastern European mail-order brides in Western countries, the ubiquitous availability of pornography just a touch away on our computing devices, and the slave trade that drives all of this global commerce. And yet, this is also a story about a quest for love in a world reduced to filth and return on investment.Truly a novel of action, entertainment, and human pathos capable of joy and horror, ennui and redemption, and worthy of both SF and literary acclaim. Have at it!

I do research on native medicinal plants and advise people on how to cultivate them or manage wild populations. This is one of the "must have" reference books sitting on a shelf in my office. Understanding how native Americans gathered and used these plants has been very helpful to me as I work with these plants. The book is sensibly organized, well written, thorough, and enjoyable to read. If you are an herbalist who uses North American herbs, a researcher studying the medicinal benefits of these herbs, or someone interested in the historical usage of these plants, I suggest you purchase this book.

I love it. It has TONS of information on the herbs, plants, medicines, and the tribes that used them. It also tells you how they used them and what part of the plants or herbs they used. Definitely worth it.

This book has soooo much detail. Best book I've found on native remedies.

Very thorough. Anyone interested in Native American medicinal plants should read.

It is a very comprehensive reference book, with cross reference and well laid out. Margrit Jolly
