I'm really enjoying the book. Some complained there was too much tennis talk, but I really like the format. Lots of insight into his life and what make him what he is. The writing seems not really how I think he might talk, so I'm guessing there was a writing assistant, but the talking seems genuine first person so I'm thinking it's all genuine. The book goes back and for between short discussions of some important/defining matches and talking about Rafa growing up and how he thinks. It's really an interesting way to bring everything together, and the back and for honestly for me keeps it more interesting. If it were just long discussions of a tennis match, I'd be bored with that part. But it's short talks of the beginning of a match, other stuff, then later in the match, then other stuff, it's honestly a very good format.If you like Rafa, you'll like the book. I like it a lot. I don't read that much lately, but I've had no trouble keeping my interest in this book.

Rafa comes across as a pretty likable guy -as expected- but abundant insight in to his life is lacking. A bit heavy on match commentary -and I'm pretty tolerant of that- but after a while it got to be a grind. Some of the before-match Wimbledon discussion was interesting -actually taking us behind the scenes to a place most fans never see. More of that would have been great. Some of the info about his father was appreciated since he's so reserved in the player's box and leery of publicity. His father comes across as much more stable and savvy than the somewhat mercurial Uncle Tony. Rafa paints himself as a bit of a man-child but he's still pretty young. What would you expect? A fast and easy read but in the end a bit light on substance.

I love tennis and already read several biographies from top players like Sampras, Agassi, Federer. It's interesting to see how different players face the game and the lifestyle. I enjoyed this one as much as Sampras and Agassi, would put Federer (read more than one) one step below them because it's not autobiography.If you enjoy the game it's definitely a book to read from one of this generation masters. (I'm a Federer/Sampras fan so no bias here.)

This is among the best biographical books I have read in a long time. The book is beautifully written and presents starkly and poignantly the story of one of the best Tennis players in history - Rafael Nadal. The writing is insightful and the reader is carried along on a rare journey enabling a first hand view of the making of a remarkable athlete, and one of the greatest tennis players in history. One learns about challenges that could have been insurmountable for most, and the unique importance of family support and love that allowed these barriers to be overcome. I could not put this book down. I began reading it because I have long admired this humble tennis great and wanted to know more about his life and his development as a great tennis player. As I finished the book I was so happy to know that my admiration was not misplaced and that Rafael Nadal is among the select few who truly deserve to be called GREAT! It is an uplifting and inspirational book and I recommend it most highly and without reservation.

Fairly interesting book about a young tennis star's beginnings. Like many other young players, Nadal's developement is due to dedication, regimentation and ability.Though Nadal is physically gifted, his mental prowess is overlooked. The years spent with his Uncle Toni shed light on the physical and mental training which Nadal utilized to his advantage in becoming a champion.Nadal discusses injuries, big matches, Davos Cup, life.Enjoyable read.

I love Rafa and always have and now I know why, he is an amazing person on and off the court and I continue to love watching him play. To me, only him and Fed & now even Murray are really fun to watch play. When there's no Fed or Rafa, I will probably not watch tennis. Always exciting and especially Rafa keeps you in suspense of what kind of shot he will get or make next. I love his energy and am so happy he is still playing

Being of PA German lineage on my mother's side of the family, I have always been interested in the various customs and practices of the many different sects and practices of the PA Germans. I discovered the pow-wow or braucherei concept as an adult and now believe that my great-grandmother may have been a braucher. Family stories refer to her as a nurse or doctor's assistant, or sometimes a mid-wife; she apparently assisted a local MD in his practice. My suspicions come from the fact that in addition to her assisting in mainstream healing, she seems to have handed many practices down that just reek of pwo-wowing mysticism. (My mother would always place a stained dishrag out in the back yard under the light of a full moon to bleach it properly.)So, with that persepctive, I found this book to be very interesting. I read up on the practice of pow-wow out of curiosity. This book, while seeming to have a sympathetic undercurrent to the custom, is a good study of the practice and what it is about, how it is viewed inside and outside the PA German communities, and also addresses the relatve successes and failures of the practice.All in all, a great read for those of us who want to learn more about the practice in a scholarly way.

I got this book as a gift as I was pow-wowed as a child several times. This book was an interesting look into pow-wow. As a PA Dutch person, there was so much I never knew. I loved his personal accounts and background information. He did an excellent job and was very thorough and I enjoyed this read.

David Kriebel has given us an interesting, investigative and quite scholarly text on the topic of pow-wow. "Powwowing" is not an instructional text, nor is it merely an historical text; this work gives the reader a wide scope of the practice of braucherei up to and including recent years. This work includes detailed recollections of his first hand encounters with pow-wowers. It is truly an interesting read, albeit a read that is quite esoteric and probably to be enjoyed by those who already have a sincere interest in the practice. If you are interested in pow-wow, make this a part of your library. See my 'Introduction to Pow-wow' list here on Amazon for more must reads in this category.

This is a wonderful book full of interesting information on a subject you do not read about often. I had been intersted in Powwowing for a while as it was rumored my great-grandfather was powwow. It is wonderful to read such a well researched and written book on the subject. I would recommend this to anyone.

This is a very well researched and well written work on a topic that is generally secretive. The author was clearly quite interested in this subject!

I have almost finished Mr. Kriebel's book and have found it to be scholarly and yet quite readable. His examination of this American shamanic tradition in it's Pennsylvania setting is accurate and respectful to the tradition and its practioners.How do I know? I have read about, studied and practiced Powwow for over thirty years and have written on the subject myself for academic and popular sources. If you really want to understand the history, social culture and practice of Powwow, read this book. Especially interesting are the interviews with actual Powwows and others involved in the practice. The research is well-documented for those of us who enjoy reading and checking the footnotes. Every library should have a copy.This book is destined to becomne a classic! Well done!

My grandmother was a powwower. We didn't talk about it. But my Mom shared some details. When I read this book, it reminded me of the stories that were shared. I purchased the book at the Berks County History Center and found it to be an interesting and detailed account of the practice. My next step is to write the oral history that I have about her powwowing so it will remain part of our heritage. Fascinating details.

Shah presents new information in an accessible way, and many readers feel that itâ€™s a book theyâ€™ve been looking for. Stories, history, unusually lucid perspectives on human nature and spirituality, and challenges to assumptions and established ways of thinking, are intertwined throughout, eventually combining to produce a special kind of reading experience. â€œThe Sufisâ€ begins with the story of â€œThe Islanders.â€ This is a â€œteaching story;â€ Shahâ€™s name for a form of literature whose internal structure and dynamics can support and provoke experience in the reader (a Sufi speciality). Sometimes the learning happens at the time of reading, when the story helps us make sense of perceptions and experiences. Often, as Desmond Morris, author of â€œThe Naked Apeâ€ and â€The Human Zooâ€ observed, itâ€™s a delayed effect that happens when we encounter situations in life that evoke a story. The chapter on â€œThe Elephant in the Dark,â€ based on Rumiâ€™s story, continues the intertwining of narrative, perspectives on human nature, and intercultural history. Then we meet the joke-figure Mulla Nasrudin, â€œone of the strangest achievements in the history of metaphysics,â€ whose antics illustrate â€œsituations in which certain states of mind are made clear;â€ usually when heâ€™s acting the idiot. Subsequent chapters introduce classical Sufis, including Rumi, Attar, Omar Khayyam, ibn el-Arabi, and el-Ghazzali, and trace the influence of Sufi thought and action on Western figures (such as Chaucer and St. Francis) and groups. We also meet the work of Western Sufis, such as Richard Burton (whose â€œKasidah,â€ a remarkable poem of great depth, is reviewed), and are introduced to The Dervish Orders, The Creed of Love, Magic and Miracles, and more. Of course, over the five decades since its publication, some things have changed. In his discussion of Sufi orders, which do not need traditional buildings and grounds except as required by local economic and political conditions, Shah mentions that â€œone Arabic publishing company is a Sufi organization. In some areas all the industrial and agricultural workers are Sufis.â€ This might have changed in the political, economic and military upheavals of the past fifty years, but the principle remains the same; the â€œorderâ€ is in the hearts and networks of people. The â€œbeautiful tomb,â€ of the great teacher Data Ganj Bakhsh (Ali el-Hujwiri), in Lahore, â€œvenerated by people of all creeds,â€ was bombed by terrorists in 2010. Still, five decades after its publication, â€œThe Sufisâ€ continues to be relevant. In â€œThe Sufisâ€ Idries Shah does not hold his punches. Straight out of the gate he states, â€œHumanity is asleep, concerned only with what is useless, living in a wrong world.â€ Shah strips from Sufism any of the woo woo spirituality often attached to mysticism from the east. Shah grounds his projection of Sufism in the practical - knowledge we all could use. Yet the reader will likely not see this practicality right away because Shah conveys this knowledge through teaching stories. The reader will likely confuse teaching stories with children tales. They arenâ€™t. Teaching stories expose the muddled mind that stands between the normal human and their full potential. Let me illustrate my point with my favorite story from the Sufis.On one occasion a neighbor found Nasrudin down on his knees looking for something. â€œWhat have you lost, Mulla?â€â€œMy key,â€ said Nasrudin.After a few minutes of searching, the other man said, â€œWhere did you drop it?â€â€œAt home.â€â€œThen why, for heavenâ€™s sake, are you looking here?â€â€œThere is more light here.â€ Shah, Idries. Powerful insight into one of the worldâ€™s most secretive and esoteric schools of thought (to simplify with a standard definition, they would not agree with such a narrow scope as â€˜thoughtâ€™)

Mostly I am responding to the review by Wrightson, who sounds like an anti-Shah crusader, perhaps jealous that his pitiful and venomous self-published book does not sell â€“ I could not persuade any of my local libraries to buy it while all of them, both public and academic ones, carry MANY books by Idries Shah.I think he confuses Sufism with some systems with which Sufism does not share much, and then he expresses his disappointment that he did not get what he wanted but what is actually there. It is like expecting some intoxicant but discovering that you get nutritious substance but without the expected kick. So, he actually fights his own demons but why he involves the book The Sufis and the most remarkable teacher Idries Shah is incomprehensible to an objective observer. The real Sufism is not some kind of either intellectual speculation or religious emotion. It is a pragmatic system which can lead the honest to self-development, to transcending ordinary confusion, from being as it were blind to Reality.Non-Sufis and fake Sufis are AT BEST people who (to continue the analogy) are blind but through frequent bumping into objects (our ordinary trial and error existence) memorized what is located where in order to avoid future painful collisions. Such a system can be used as an ersatz of real perceptions but in the fluid world the â€˜memorized location of objectsâ€™ is constantly changes. The book was truly informative I only wish there was more content in the book.

Very insightful and encouraging book. Chad is a great musician and now a great author. This was a very quick and easy read and very informative. Any musician wanting to be successful either at home or in Nashville needs to read this.

This book caught my eye to find out what it takes and what a muscian needs to do to get in the profession.I don't plan to do this but wanted to know things about what the muscian do to get in their place and what avenuethey want to go to in the music business cause its not a party to get there!!

However, as a new juicer, I struggled w/ what to juice, how much raw veg/fruit I needed and why that particular produce was good for my body.After following Drew Canole on FB for a few weeks, decided to try his book. Best bang for the buck!!! Great recipes (often w/ catchy names) that also tell you the benefits of that particular juice. The recipes are divided into Fruit Juices (50 recipes) and Veggie Juices (54 recipes). This book is a must have for anyone that wants to try out juicing and see if they like it to those of us that are totally hooked! There are also yummy recipes that my kiddos and hubby (that typically hates veggies) enjoy!! As a family, we now juice several times a day and these recipes keep us from getting bored!Happy juicing!

Received yesterday, and been reading this morning, making a grocery list from the book. I had the apples, not the orange, but organic orange juice, and the first recipe listed in this book, "Kick a Virus", I did. Feel better after doing that. Soar throat, then sinus this week after cleaning up lots of pollen on our screen in back porch- cement porch, window screens, furniture, cat lounge, etc. I should of known better; this has happen in the past cleaning up pollen. Living in the country with all these woods, farmers working in their field, etc. Anyways, with standing on, By Jesus stripes I am healed, and now your juice book, and the recipe I just tried - MUCH BETTER! Thank-You. Looking forward in trying your other recipes. Do you sell any other books?

Just browsing through this book has me beyond excited. Not only do the recipes sound delicious, but this book is also packed with no nonsense, tell it like it is advice on how to get healthy, stay healthy, and love doing it. There is so much I want to say about this book, but it all boils down to this: BUY it, READ it, USE it, STICK to it.Juicing has changed my life, it has greatly improved my health. No more does a long, hard day at work send me into a week long fibromyalgia flare. Now my recovery time is overnight. I have tons of energy. I feel better, LOOK better. No more do I look 9 months pregnant (due to being lactose intolerant and having very slow peristalsis). I have been able to kick my sugar habit, and switched to a mostly vegetarian diet.I have grown to love the taste of the vegetable juices, and can't WAIT to try these. I still have a ways to go, but I KNOW that juicing will get me there! I wish I had a better juicer so I could share it with all of my friends without having to wait for the motor to cool off. People come by to see me just to try my juice, and I've been able to encourage lots of people to try juicing, even if it's just adding fresh juice to their current diet, it's a start. But the juicer I have is not ideal for a lot of juice at once, so I am a little limited.But I keep on going. Thank you Drew for a great book, for sharing your vision and success with us, and for all you do to encourage people to get healthy!

Overall, I thought this was a good guide. Overall, I thought this was a good guide. I especially liked the intro and the tips, especially as I was already juicing but because of this book â€“ I was able to make some minor improvements, such as using cucumber as a base. I also like to experiment a lot with different juices so this helped give me a few ideas.My only complaint is it gives you the guidance on each fruit or veggie (i.e. 2 apples, etc) but does not give you guidance on the yield. Itâ€™s very helpful to know how much juice you get out of each fruit or veggie if you are planning for a juice cleanse. Otherwise, itâ€™s a great book.

I came across one of Drew's YouTube videos by just searching for anything on juicing. It only took that one video for me and then I was hooked. There is something special about this guy, which makes you feel comfortable while getting you motivated and excited to start juicing. Drew is being himself on the videos and you can see that same personality in his book. I looked at a dozen other books and the main problem was the author going too far with the information. For example, many books would have over 2 pages of data and information on only one recipe. I felt like I was reading a label from a GNC Mega Man Vitamin box. Just tell me what's going in the juicer and how much of it. Sure, a few sentences about how this particular drink can help you would be great Well, that's exactly how this book is written This book by far has the most recipes as well.So thank you Drew if you see this. I'm not sure how if its possible to speak with you one on one on setting up a program for me. Of course I'm expecting to pay for that too. I'm 33/M and at a rock bottom with my health. Was diagnosed with hypogonadism at 22 and now it's lead to multiple other issues including high blood pressure. High cholesterol, raynaulds syndrome, extreme fatigue, zero libido and more. I'm too young to be on so many medications and I want to change my life around. My diet is terrible and I know that's the first thing that must be changed in any life transformation.Therefore, please let me know the nest way or even if its possible to set something up.In closing, buy this book and you will be happy. This is an amazing book. The first section of the book - when Lauren and Ryan decide to separate - shows an excruciating view of how the things we found delightful and loveable at the beginning of a relationship can morph into making us feel irritated and even infuriated. It is true that little things can break a couple up. It's a sad/funny incident involving a disagreement over where they parked the car while attending a Lakers game that finally makes the couple face that they want to be apart.They decide to take a year apart, with no contact with one another.There are so many layers to the relationship that are peeled off and revealed by the author. To the bitter decision to separate, they both say they feel they still love one another but they just can't live with one another.I've been married for a long time now (more than 25 years) but I was divorced earlier in my life. I understand what it takes to keep a marriage together and how one comes apart. The author really hits the nail on the head. When she wrote about them coming apart, I kept saying to my self as I read, " YES...that is exactly how it can happen."During their year separation Ryan and Lauren both come to realize that life did not turn out the way they wanted partly because they did not tell the other person what they wanted and partly because they never thought about "marriage" being different from "courting." An example of this is that Lauren hated going to Lakers games and Ryan got tickets often. Instead of speaking up and even suggesting that she only go to an occasional game, she went but harbored some resentment. It never occurred to Ryan (nor did he ask) whether she liked going to the games or not.In the course of the novel, Lauren's family members also experience some relationship changes and you'll find some surprises.If you feel the ending is a bit too neat and "rose colored glasses." I can't really disagree with you. But this is a story that is very well written and filled with hope. It will make you laugh and make you cry and warm your heart. It would make a great movie.If you haven't read the author's other book (FOREVER, INTERRUPTED) don't miss it. Taylor Jenkins Reid is an author who I will follow. Hope she is working on another novel!

I sat on this book for months. I purchased it right when it came out, but I just couldn't bring myself to read it. You see, I went through a divorce this year and I just wasn't sure I couldn't handle bringing up the hurt again. Things are better now. I am better. So, about a month ago I pulled the book out. When I tell you that I devoured this book, I mean I literally couldn't put it down and read it within a few hours. It's rare for me to find reads like this anymore. Don't get me wrong, there are some fantastic books out there, but this one just hit me on such a personal level. Plus, the writing was amazing. I felt like I was talking to a girlfriend throughout the whole book.I really don't want to recap the story, but I will tell you that what Lauren and Ryan go through was so very real. It's so easy to become disconnected and complacent in a marriage. To me, that's what happened to Ryan and Lauren. They became so wrapped up their every day lives that they truly forgot about honoring each other and their marriage. It was sad to read about how things began to crumble, but again, so real. They didn't have problems that happened over night. It was a series of miscommunication, lack of interest in each other, and they simply forgot all the reasons they fell in love in the first place. I think when life sets in and the rose colored glasses come off, it's hard to keep a marriage, or any relationship alive. You have to deal with the pesty little things like hygiene habits, laziness, snoring, farting, and other unpleasantries. The little things continued to build for Lauren and then it become a bigger issue.Even though it was hard to read at times, seeing this couple go through something so challenging was really rewarding for me in the end. I won't tell you if they make it or not as a couple, but I will tell you that they learned so much about themselves throughout their separation. Another thing that hit me hard while reading this one is, that the couples who can make it through hard times, may not always be "in love". Sure, they love each other, but I think in long term relationships/marriages, there are times that you aren't necessarily in love with your partner. It's finding ways to fall in love again that helps to make it last.Overall, I can say without a doubt that this is one of my best books of the year. Yes, it reached me personally, but I also felt that there were some really great messages throughout the book for everyone. It truly has something for every reader; self discovery, heart ache, falling in love, and family complexities. Seriously...read this book!

So it took me a little longer to read this book. I started it and then had to walk away from it. It made me angry and sad. Quite frankly, I didn't really care for either Ryan or Lauren and the way that they were treating one another and their marriage. It affected me and was upsetting. While the content was upsetting, the story telling was excellent. The fact that this author was able to pull those emotions from me, says a lot about her ability to engage me as a reader, and to draw us on. It was for my own piece of mind that I walked away from this book for a few days, but I still found myself thinking about it and wondering what was going on.I'm glad that I stuck with it. It was a process of self discovery more than anything. While I don't personally agree with the decision that they made, and how they went about it. I did like the lessons that were learned. The growth and perspective that Lauren and Ryan came to, but I guess I didn't like that they felt they couldn't come to the conclusion together. There was a lot in this book, that I would never do, don't agree with, ideas of marriage that don't work for me, and blah, blah, blah....., but this author got to me, she made me think and she made me feel. Not necessarily all warm and fuzzy feelings, but she did make me feel things. I do feel that that is a powerful thing. I'm glad that I stuck with this book. I did enjoy the letter from Allie. I thought it was an appropriate way to end the book.

I started using some of Ethan's methods to help students get started on their essays a couple of years ago based on some of the content on his website and a seminar I attended, given by Ethan. I found that Ethan's suggested steps to writing great essays essential. I was finally able to effectively help students begin to extract "their stories" from deep within them. These were to be some of the best brainstorming exercises I ever used for essay writing! Even the students were pleasantly surprised what they came up with. The book adds even more structure and suggestions. I will be utilizing Ethan's book to help all my students tell their stories in their college essays. So glad I found him, his body of work is not only a great resource, but he is committed to helping students.
