This is the perfect guidebook, even for folks who usually just depend on the internet. The author understands that most of us have limited time to travel, and he's really good at rating and describing things, so you can tell what activities will be right for you. And I liked the fact that though I only had 8 days in country, thanks to the information on history and culture that is in the book, I really felt like I knew what to look for when I hit the ground, and could better understand what I was seeing. The organiztion is topnotch and the suggested itineraries are right on (I used one to plan the trip and felt like I got the exact right type of trip for me). So glad I had this in hand while in Ireland. I had gotten other guides, but I ended up leaving them in the hotel room. This was the best by far.
I bought a few guidebooks with me to Ireland, but the others ended up staying in my room and I carried this one with me. I really appreciated how personal the writing was, and how the author was able to infuse a sense of the culture and history into everything he wrote. So I’d be at a sight and could pull out the guide and not just get the facts and figures, but learn what made the place quirky and interesting. There were times we took guided tours and I kept glancing down at the book because what was in there was more interesting than what the tour guide had to say! I also really liked the sense this book gave us of the B&B’s and hotels we ended up staying in before we got there. We stayed in some really cool places, with just the loveliest owners and staff (and didn’t pay too much). Get this one!
Great information! Easy to read and use as a travel planner. My only comment is that no Irish that I spoke to thought that going to Northern Ireland was a good idea. I took their word.
If you bought one of these 3 years ago no need to buy another. We tried using this book 3 times in 3 different places for restaurants and in all 3 instances the restaurants were closed at least 2 years previously!! One was closed 3 years before. Some of the info was helpful but frankly not much more than i could find for free on any one of a dozen web sites about ireland. Also the prices are always wrong - often listing food prices less than half of reality. Ill be switching to another travel guide.
Great resource for our trip
Just what I expected - thorough, yet filled with brief summaries. The maps are great. Will make our June visit that much more enjoyable.
Can't go wrong with this travel book ever, Frommer's is always the go to book to buy when traveling anywhere. Have tried others but thisis definitely the best, very informative.
We spent a week in Dublin with outlying day trips to the west coast. We had six different travel books but this was one of the 2 we used the most.
