Iced: Fever Series Book 6, by Karen Marie Moning

Review

“Moning returns to the heady world of her Fever series, and the results are addictive and consistently surprising. . . . The best elements of Moning’s sensual, shadowy epic are still here, from the sensual and enigmatic Fae to the super-alpha heroes and the breathless pace of their escalating conflicts. At its heart is a heroine whose development is likely to become the stuff of legends as this unforgettable, haunting series continues to evolve.”—RT Book Reviews   “This is one of my favorite 2012 reads . . . It’s engaging, hilarious, amazing and Dani is going to be one heck of a woman.”—USA Today   “A gripping story that combines excellent storytelling with believable characters that are rendered both superhuman and superbly human, with emotional fragility and psychological vulnerability in an unstable world fraught with danger . . . Fast-paced, with nonstop action set in a fascinating urban fantasy world of Dublin under siege, this is a smart, bold and textured success.”─Kirkus Reviews   “Moning is a master storyteller. I don’t know how she does it, but she begs me to get on my knees and pay worship to the woman who has brought me the best, most labyrinthine stories and characters I’ve ever had the privilege to get to know. She weaves brilliantly, unapologetically, and without exception, and she has threaded the needle into me and I’ve been pulled, over and over, into her tapestry, and I don’t think I’m ever getting out. Iced is no exception.”—The Bawdy Book Blog (five-starred review)   “Moning has taken a beloved series and made it better. . . . [She] has a way of bringing the reader into the story with her imaginative writing style and characters that are colorful and entertaining. . . . Please give Iced a try, you will become a Dani fan just like I did.”—Night Owl Romance (top pick)   “An exciting opening of a new Fever saga . . . Readers will enjoy that the prime Fever cast plays major roles and the introduction of two new unique dangerous Fae who widen the mythos.”—Genre Go Round Reviews   “[Moning] has always managed to give me everything I want in a book. . . . Iced will not disappoint.”—Open Book Society   “We get edge of your seat action and danger. We get the promise of so much more to come. All in all, this is an excellent start to Dani’s trilogy.”—Scandalicious Book Reviews   “Of course, I ended up loving this book. Just like I love everything [Moning] writes.”—Fiction Vixen

Like most others looking at this book I read the 5 volume Fever series from which it derives, a series I thoroughly enjoyed for its creative spark and plot development. A character introduced late in the Fever series, a 14 year old named Dani, is the protagonist for Iced. The novel is still loosely set in Dublin, and the scenario picks up where the Fever series ended, with the wall between the world of Fae and that of humans broken, leaking Seelie, Unseelie, and other nightmarish elements of Fae into the world of humans, slowly wiping out humanity. For unknown reasons, Dani has the ability to move with blinding speed from place to place so long as she is furnished with enough to eat (an eating disorder that would make most of us envious, since she constantly gorges on Snickers). She has possession of a Fae sword that can kill Seelie and Unseelie. Her abilities are trumped by the character Ryodan (also somewhat of a player in the Fever series), his henchman Lor, and Christian, who is gradually turning from human into a ruthless Unseelie prince. For continuity, there are occasional references to the characters of Mac and Barrons from the Fever series, where Mac was a protagonist who had to morph from party girl to a force of nature. Mac possesses the only other known weapon, a spear, that can kill Seelie and Unseelie. There is enough complexity that the author deserves credit for not getting things tangled up any more than they already were.Overall, I don't think this novel is a bad effort, it just gets a bit tiresome to read through the same Dani musings over and over and over. She's characterized as an insecure teenager with an inflated ego to cover for her anxieties, indulging in endlessly stupid introspection. The plot line is OK, but takes far too long to develop in getting from point A to point B. In the first 5 books the story unfolded in unexpected and interesting ways. That creative spark was less in evidence in this novel, with Dani and Ryodan basically doing the same song and dance repeatedly to the extent you just want to say "OK, OK, I get it". There is some redemption for the pace of the book when Dani inadvertently unleashes the Crimson Hag from her prison in the White Mansion, a Fae structure introduced in the Fever Series. But then, that also proves to be an artifice for setting up the next novel in the developing series. I was also put off by how Iced ended, with a few paragraphs devoted at the very end to having Mac suddenly confront Dani (i.e., stay tuned, a preview of coming attractions).I can recommend this book for fans of the Fever series, but be warned that it is not a page turner. It does do a reasonably good job of setting up for a series it is obviously designed to lead into. Hopefully subsequent volumes will redeem what I found to be a rather average effort at leveraging the much better executed Fever series.

5/5 Hoar Frost King starsI put off reading this for a long time. I think I was sad that things were pretty much shorn up with Barrons and Mac's story, and I wasn't ready to let go. Also, I wasn't sure I wanted to read a story so Danicentric.I was wrong on all counts. I loved being in Dani's head. She's fearless, despite her young age. It's hard not to love her zest for life and adventure. She'd rather risk her life, face death head-on, than live to old age in safety and boredom.Ryodan is like Barrons. I get that. Hard to know. Still, he's not fooling anyone. He cares about what happens to Dani. Even when she makes him so mad he threatens to break her legs.Dancer is delightful. I hope he is in more of the coming stories.Christian is the character I feel most sorry for. He has no control over the fact that he's turning into a monster. He can't help it. But he's still not pleasant to be around. He's lost the most in this post AWC world. On to the next book. Hopefully, Dani and Mac get their stuff sorted.

I have to admit that, unlike the first 5 books, it took me several weeks to finish Iced. I didn't enjoy it nearly as much as the others. Having to read it in a 14 year-old's PoV was annoying. The excessive (overuse) of the words "dude", "mega" and "gah" were enough to have me grinding my teeth. I just think it would have been a better idea to introduce Dani, at the very least, as an 18 year-old who was a bit more mature-minded. I found myself skimming through the rest of the book. I was never a fan of Dani in the previous books and Iced did nothing to endear her to me. It only served to solidify the fact that I truly dislike her character. The book itself was well written and the main story was interesting, while the side stories, imo, added nothing to it. The constant receptiveness of things already covered was something else I found tedious. It felt more like strategically placed fillers with the sole purpose of lengthening the book. Please understand that this is MY opinion and no way an attack on KMM. But I do hope with the next book in the trilogy, KMM will have Dani a bit older and a lot less annoying.

I was hesitant to start this book because I knew it was going to be different from the other books in the series. I had seen the way that Dani talked and, in all honesty, it got on my nerves. I ended up changing a few of her words of choice while I read because they annoyed me so much.Besides the word choice, I love the way the story turned out. It was nice to see the story continue after I had fallen in love with it. Karen Marie Moning has a way with words and I didn't want it to end so soon. I want this world to continue even if it's coming from a character whose speech got on my nerves.I admit that I am intrigued to find out what happens with Dani, though. I was a bit uneasy about the way the men talked about her in this book, but it was sweet at the same time. Ryodan and Christian can both see the woman she will become in her at the tender age of 14. If someone would have said that to me at that age, I probably would have reacted the same as Dani and been stunned yet a bit creeped out.I'm excited to see what happens next for Dani and how Moning handles her age in the next books.

This book is about Dani. To be honest, I skipped over her previous newspaper articles in the past books because she's very unrelatable and obnoxious. Also, her English is a little atrocious. I bought all the books in this series at one time because I couldn't get enough of Mac and Barron's. I never realized this was about Dani or I wouldn't have. I still attempted to read it, however. At least until I realized there would be a love story between a 14 year old child and grown men. That was enough for me to move on to the next book.

Instead of a mature, insightful look at creativity and the value of art--as was my take-away from the book’s glowing description--“Art Matters” struck me as banal, sophomoric, and over-priced. It may be inspirational to a teen that has never been encouraged to pursue his or her creative interests. But it failed to move me. And what’s with “Make Good Art”? That’s pretty trite. Who’s to judge what’s “good”? If one is moved to create, then create with passion and mindfulness! Relish the process and not the results. Art does matter.

There are two reasons why you would buy this book: you’re a big Neil Gaiman fan, or you’re a huge Chris Riddell fan (Riddell illustrated the book).I follow both Gaiman and Riddell on Twitter, Gaiman because he’s an interesting person and says interesting things about writing, and Riddell because he’s such a brilliant artist and sometimes posts videos of his pencil drawing. I got caught up in the release tweets for this book and bought it because I’m passionate about art.The book is a collection of four essays Gaiman wrote between 2011 and 2015, beautifully illustrated by Riddell. Riddell and Gaiman frequently collaborate; they have a very successful working relationship. The first three essays were merely okay; they didn’t tell me anything new. I was disappointed and feared that this quick book, readable in one short sitting, was not worth my time. However, the final essay redeemed the book for me. I won’t reveal everything I liked, because I don’t want to spoil the book for anyone else; but here are three highlights:• “Something that worked for me was imagining that where I wanted to be. . . was a mountain. A distant mountain. My goal. . . And when I truly was not sure what to do, I could stop, and think about whether it was taking me towards or away from the mountain.”• “My first book—a piece of journalism I had done for the money, and which had already bought me an electric typewriter from the advance—should have been a best seller. . . I decided that I would do my best in future not to write books just for the money. . . If I did work I was proud of, and I didn’t get the money, at least I’d have the work.”• “The old rules are crumbling and nobody knows what the new rules are. So make up your own rules.”The book is worth visiting your local library for.

This little book is a wonderful collection of great illustrations and wisdom. I’ll enjoy reading it as soon as I’ve received meaning today. Inspirated I decided to use some watercolors to my favorite pages! Thank you for your art.

I read it in twenty minutes and was left uninspired and disappointed. This is four very short essays spread out into a book. The font used was one of those "handwriting" ones in all caps and hard to read. The pencil sketch illustrations took up the majority of the space on most pages. Not much content.

This is a book that you can read quickly and yet spend a lifetime thinking about. Like most of Gaiman’s work (and I’ve been following him since the Sandman days), the text in here goes much, much deeper than what’s printed on the pages. Combined with Riddell’s sketches this book is a work of art itself, and like all “good art” it is definitely worth experiencing.

Yes this book is a very quick read. Everyone is going to have a different metric for what is "worth the money" to them. Personally, I loved this book and will be buying 3 more copies.I have three kids, aged 21, 19, and 16. They are each very creative, with different artistic strengths (writing, visual art, and music, respectively). They all have dreams of doing what they love as a means to support themselves. They will each be getting a copy for Christmas this year.

This beautiful book, with illustrations, succinctly narrates the author's travails and successes. It encourages any/all would-be artists (writers, specifically, but also intimated for any artistic career) to be true to themselves at all times. It's a wonder to read as it outlines methods for commercial success with personal gratification. Every current and future writer or anyone in any other professional field should read this book. It makes you glad you read it!

A quick read with inspiring insight. The images contribute rather than distract. Familiar Gaiman pieces reimaged with Chris Riddell's gift for simple lines and whimsical images.

I have used my go to theory and try to watch the series or movie first. This saves me much disappointment when the book is much better than the "Hollywood" version. I don't know if it will work when the written source is as sparse as a comic book ! This first volume gave minimal details and I really appreciated the expansion and embellishments of the TV series. We will see if this trend continues with further volumes!

This is a pretty short graphic novel, but being how the TV show remake of it has become one of the most successful horror TV programs of all time, this is well worth obtaining. The illustrations are all in black and white but very detailed and look very good on the Kindle Fire HD. It's interesting reading to see the skeleton of what the much more padded out pilot episode for the Walking Dead was based on. Bicycle Girl for one was expanded on in the TV version a lot more. I like seeing what Rick and the other characters were imagined to look like before TV casting happened as well. There's also previews of another graphic novel after this one called Cloudfall which starts off with an opening frame of a naked woman in bed on top of a guy, she is being fondled and quite enjoying it. I mention this as the hard copies of the Walking Dead graphic novels are checked out by a lot of kids in the library (even though they are in the adult graphic novel section) where I work so this may be a deterrent for some parents.

The Walking Dead #1 by Robert Kirkman and Tony Moore, who provided the Illustrations is a the story that follows most of the narratives within the first few episodes from the first season of the AMC TV show of the same name. This issue is about Rick Grimes who is a Sheriff of a small town in Kentucky who awakes in a hospital after being Comatosed after being shot while on duty. He returns home to find his family, son Carl and wife Lori, gone. He meets his new neighbor, who points him towards Atlanta. Rick then sets off to Atlanta to search for his family. The comic is great and very fast paced. The comic in my opinion is better paced than the TV show. The characters are well fleshed out, parden the pun. You feel for each character and the series connects all of them together beautifully. I enjoyed this comic and would definitely recommend it to others.Thank you for reading my review.

I used to read comics when I was a teen and I grew out of them and into novels. I have occasionally tried to read a comic that looked interesting (From Hell, Fall of Cthulu, Various Starwar comics, Way of the Rat, The Path) and quickly losing interest. After watching The Walking Dead since season 1 and seeing the Walking Dead #1 for Kindle for free, I thought I would take a chance. This series is the first one in years to keep my interest, to keep me wanting more.I knew that the series differs from the show, which I see as a good thing. The differences all me to have two journeys with Rick and Carl, instead of just one. Some things are the same, but no one ever gets up in arms about the things that are the same, they go apeshit over the differences.

This comic sucks compared to the show....Graphics weren't all that great either.Waste of time to read this story.

I love the show and think it is some of the best, sharpest story telling I have encountered anywhere. I am reading the comics to get a feel for the source material. I am not an avid reader of comics, maybe only read a handful in my life. The storytelling in this first comic of the Walking Dead seems simplistic to me. The development on the show is amazing and this pales in comparison to that. Going to keep reading, though because that's how much I love the television version.

As a debut, this was good but not gripping. The dialogue is a bit ham-fisted in spots, but it's not terrible. The story itself was short—only about half the book. The rest is a preview for a different comic. One thing I really enjoyed was the letter from the writer, in which he explains his motive behind developing this story. The story of this has clearly been overwhelmed by the television series based on the work, but this still stands as good storytelling, with a lot of thought and heart.

Robert kirkman delivers a fantastic example of zombie fiction with his ongoing series, The Walking Dead. Imagine a world with no tv, no internet, no power, nothing. A good zombie story shows our society at its core, and that's exactly what the walking dead does. As members of today's society, we are materialistic and greedy. With every advance in technology, we get farther and yet closer to wiod animals. When the disease hits, all of that is technology is taken away, people are exposed as who they are. Animals. We are all animals, creatures made for one reason. To live. To

The most damning remark I can make is that the Smithsonian "Natural History" is so extraordinarily good, and so graphically rich that the text doesn't matter much, that my five-year-old prefers it. I am happy to have both. The descriptions of animals, plants and minerals are pitched very well for a child. It is enough information that they are interested. In this day in which print must compete with media, this is a very powerful competitor. My son constantly pesters me to look for videos on the Internet of things like leopards killing antelope and such. I would far rather that he get his information from reading. The written word is a faster way to convey information, and the information is somewhat more objective, less laden with emotion than the video image. For that reason I am extremely happy to have this book to read together with him. When you read together with the child there is a bond that is absent when you merely sit together and witness the same events on video. The child's brain needs conversation in order to develop, and a book provides the opportunity for such conversation. In summary, this book was very much worth the cost and will be read for several years to come. The English is at a very approachable level, which means that my son will be able to share it with his friends even though English is to them a second language. Five stars.

Love the pictures and descriptions. It doesn't fit 100% with a biblical worldview though

Great learning resource. My kids loved this book.

Love this series. Really interesting and informative.

I love history, but this was not well done. Boring

FIrst off, I want to say that I enjoyed this book. It was a fast read, with lots of action. Sarah was an interesting character, a strong, independent female with a special skill set of marksmanship. Devon was sexy and just the right mix of cocky and vulnerable. I liked that the shifters were cougars, it was refreshing to see catlike characteristics highlighted for a change. However, I would've liked to see more depth into Sarah's character. There were things that seemed rushed with her, her background, her personal history, her successes, her triumphs, her disappointments, etc. She was such an intriguing character and I wanted I more rounded understanding of her motivations. Another thing I would've also liked to see was her getting more into the fighting aspect of the novel. Sarah is a badass. She's super skilled and can kick butt. She talked a big game, but really only had one kill. It just seems to me that Sarah's character was set up to be kind of a rogue of a mate (one that didn't fit the mate mold), but then when it came down to the nitty gritty, she wasn't that unique.Anyway, the whole genetic engineering subplot was interesting and kept my attention. It was a good set up for the next story...I suspect Hunter will be finding his mate soon. But really, where this book shines is when describing the shifts between human and cougar. It was nicely done. And, if shifters existed, it would totally be how I would expect a shift from human to animal to human would happen.

Sarah Marksman is a cop/Forest Ranger and there have been cougar killing and siteting of a cougar on the Cascade property. She meets Devon and his brothers Hunter, Yalen, Brock, Luca and Liam. Plus Devon's parents Galen and Marie. The whole family are cougar shifters. So Devon takes her around the property and they do spot a cougar, but it's one of the Cascade cousins and he's been experimented on. This is the start of the mating relationship between Devon and Sarah. Someone is experimenting on cougar and coyote shifters. Many surprises both good and bad, so much betrayal, fighting, several kidnappings and lots of intense sex. A page turning enjoyable read.I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

"Enter the lair: Book 2," is an intensely provocative tale of feline shapeshifters and the woman involved in hunting them. Sarah Marksmen is a superior marksman, however she soon becomes entangled in a web of lies, secrets, and supernatural encounters with sexual yet erratic beings. She must face brutal truths and keep her emotions, feelings and desires from interfering with what she came to do. Especially when a erotically sexual beast is pursuing her unrelentlessly! Highly recommended for all who love an explicit paranormal thriller!

This is the second book in the series but the first one I have read, it was a quick romance Devon and Sahara with twists that kept everything interesting. Well pace writing with some very hot adult content.

A ranger is sent to deal with a sick nuisance cougar! Look out it is a sick diseased shifter! She meets her shifter mate! Someone knows about shifters and is experimenting on them! Enjoyed it, hope you do as well!

Book 1 was tantalizing and I'm glad to report this second installment delivers even more sizzle. This author knows how to hit all the right buttons! Great job.

Enjoyed the story so much I had to go online to get book 1 and 3. Can’t wait to see what happens next.

Sarah is a ranger to spite her father since he’s a hunter that makes trophies of animals or for money. Sarah is sent to hunt for a sick cougar that is attacking people. She runs into Devon who is a cougar shifter and he realizes that she’s his mate. He wants to keep her safe after he finds that she’s searching for a sick cougar. He also knows that she’s been bitten and is slowly turning into a shifter. Will he convince her that she’s his mate and will she help him and his family stop her father from hunting animals for trophies?I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Gr 4–6—Ernestine is determined to bring on the zombie apocalypse. She visits a neighboring graveyard with her younger stepbrother and partner in crime, Charleston, in an attempt to raise the dead. After a possible zombie sighting, Ernestine rushes back to her home where she lives with her artist/caretaker parents in the MacGillicuddie House for Retired Artists, Both Performing and Otherwise where a wild party is underway. The converted apartment house is filled with eccentric and colorful residents, presided over by the glamorous, kooky, art-loving, and incredibly wealthy Mrs. MacGillicuddie. The party reaches a raucous climax when a giant chandelier crashes down from the ceiling, practically squashing Mrs. M. More incidents prove that foul play is certainly involved. Are there really zombies afoot, and what is it about them that has the precocious, capable, and imaginative Ernestine so intrigued? All of these answers are eventually revealed, although one dangling loose end will draw readers into a potential sequel. Debut author Wyatt offers a plot-driven, humorous mystery that will keep kids turning pages. The diverse and intriguing cast of characters allows for multiple suspects, red herrings, and a surprise twist ending. Themes include the importance of community and family, the value of the older generation, the narcissistic nature of social media, and overcoming hurt from the past. VERDICT A traditional mystery filled with creepy zombie bits and laugh-out-loud funny moments make for a winning combination. A strong choice for most collections.—Kate Nafz, Fair Lawn Public Library

This book will keep you up at night, in a good way. Your mind will work overtime as zombie apocalypse expert, Ernestine, and her stepbrother work through a maze of clues and quirky characters as a wild, murderous plot unfolds. Ernestine, true to her name, is serious, sincere, and determined in zombie hunting as well as being the “adult” when her artist parents get distracted. The quick, clever dialogue is very funny and the eccentric characters/suspects/zombies truly come to life.

I liked it because it kept me interested from the very beginning to the very end. I would recommend this to all my grandchildren and great grandchildren. I gave it five stars because it was very well written.

My nine year old boy enjoyed Ernestine’s quirkiness and creativity. He laughed as he imagined the ridiculous situations described. For all of Ernestine’s crazy adventures, however, there was something that rang so true in her adolescent desire for just a little more supervision.

I enjoyed it.

Enjoyed the book. Fun, funny and entertaining. I could visualize this as a movie. Thoroughly enjoyed the characters, the mystery and Ernestine!

The story is well-paced, unpredictable and irreverent. The writing is skillful and paints clear and fanciful images and is genuinely amusing. The characters are quirky, the vocabulary level used is appropriate for the middle-grade age bracket. When present the adults in the story are generally useless or ridiculous which is often the case with young adult books. Ernestine strives to be heroic in her fanciful endeavors and in the process is sometimes snarky and impatient. While reading I was reminded of books I loved as a child with central characters like Ernestine, ones with little oversight and fun adventures. It helped to balance the total and complete control my parents had over my young life which while essential also could feel suffocating. I lived vicariously through the children who acted more like the adults and were often given dominion over their lives. Ernestine is brave, a leader and a problem solver. The book is thoroughly funny and engaging.

I really loved ERNESTINE, CATASTROPHE QUEEN. So much fun. Mystery, an eccentric cast of characters, and a girl trying to start the zombie apocalypse!!! And my 10yo loved it right a long with me. Such a great book to bookclub with your tween. Is that still a word? Here's Nova's review 💜By: 10yo Novalee AndreeErnestine Catastrophe Queen, by Merrill Wyatt, is a bloodchilling mystery with a twist that surprised the heck out of me. The story focuses on a girl named, (you guessed it) Ernestine. She is a very smart girl and she believes that she can bring the dead back to life. She walks in the dead of night to the graveyard with her stepbrother to try to begin the zombie apocalypse. But, as her experiment takes a turn she finds that her neighbor and her family is in danger. She is eager to solve the mystery and prove to everyone that it is just her zombie causing all of this, and she is determined to catch the zombie and to make more. But, as the plot leads on, Ernestine finds herself in even more danger. Someone is attempting to break in and murder her unsuspecting rich neighbor, Mrs. McGillicuddie, who is not worried at all. Ernestine is still convinced it is a zombie, but new evidence is leading her in a different direction. What I thought during half the text: Did Ernestine even make a zombie? Now that I really think about it, though, I think she did. Anyway, if you want to know what really happens, reading the book would be highly advisable, because it was really amazing. Five stars!!!!

I had a wonderful time reading this book, and I am far beyond my middle-grade reading years! Ernestine is smart, competent, super-prepared for anything and full of confidence. My 10-year-old self wants to be her best friend. However, my favorite parts are the descriptions of the other people living in the MacGillicudie House for Retired Artists, Performing and Otherwise. Wyatt has built in a lot of sly humor that older readers will probably appreciate more, even while it remains entirely appropriate for the target audience. The potential zombie apocalypse is an entertaining side plot to the mystery at the heart of the book. I received an advance copy and promptly bought 3 copies for my favorite young relatives once the book was officially out. Highly recommended!

Abraham Heschel helped me to understand the essence of "ineffable." Having read "The Sabath," and possessing several other books by Rabbai Heschel, the gem stones presented in this book are more stepping stones to standing before that ineffable. One is indeed in "awe" of God here whatever be the avenues or established religion that leads you to Him. Always there, unchanging, caring, loving. And always ready to listen and show His ways. This book will make you want more of Rabbai Heschel's insights. More importantly it will make you want more of God. And that is a good thing.

Rabbi Heschel "a smoldering branch from tree consumed by fire" led a remarkable life of devotion to God and truth. The book enters into thoughts of a Hassidic Jew in the early 1950's in the last section but before is filled with spiritual wisdom open to all. Many hours of prayer and contemplation within these pages.

This book is worthwhile reading and a very fascinating and fresh approach during daily devotions.

Not really what I expected.

Abraham Joshua Heschel was an amazing thinker. If you appreciate C.S. Lewis' non fiction work (i.e., Surprised By Joy, The Weight of Glory, Miracles, The Problem of Pain etc) you'll love Heschel and see an immediate similarity.

If you are a newcomer to Rabbi Abraham Heschel this is a perfect beginning text. Small gems from his larger works that will lift your soul and inspire you about the depth and joy of living. It will let you know which of his longer works you will want to read next, because this "appetizer" will whet you appetite for a larger meal of spiritual food.

Heschel's books are a great read and help your perspective.

This is truly a beautiful, beautiful book.

Son Really likes reading this series of books

Super cute and useful

I ordered this paperback for my grandson who loves this series. When it got here, it was not a paperback as I know them at all, but rather a booklet, in the form like you would see in doctor's offices, etc. It was so disappointing, I threw it away after making note of the seller so never to purchase anything from her again.

This was a paperback book yes, but it was like 5 pages long. The pages were SUPER thin, like a little leaflet/booklet. NOT worth the money at all!!!

That's because these were freebies from Scholastic to teachers!

We love this series of books. They are so cute and encourage positive behavior.

Age of Ambition: Chasing Fortune, Truth, and Faith in the New China, by Evan Osnos

Review

“In the pages of the New Yorker, Evan Osnos has portrayed, explained and poked fun at this new China better than any other writer from the West or the East. In Age of Ambition, Osnos takes his reporting a step further, illuminating what he calls China's Gilded Age, its appetites, challenges and dilemmas, in a way few have done.” ―John Pomfret, Washington Post“Age of Ambition is… a riveting and troubling portrait of a people in a state of extreme anxiety about their identity, values and future, [and] a China rived by moral crisis and explosive frustration.” ―Judith Shapiro, New York Times“For those new to China, Mr Osnos beautifully portrays the nation in all its craziness, providing a ringside seat for the greatest show on earth.” ―The Economist“Beautifully written ... an absolute must-read.” ―Edward Steinfeld, Harvard Magazine“China's Gilded Age has been every bit as fascinating, colorful and tragic as our own -- and [Osnos] offers an engrossing account of it… [He] understands the depths of the transformations, the complexity of the contradictions, and the fragility of the overall enterprise.” ―Chicago Tribune“Evan Osnos ... has put his keen insight and intrepid research skills to use in his exploration of the internal intellectual and spiritual infrastructure of China's rise.” ―Dan Blumenthal, The National Interest“[Osnos] adeptly chronicles… China's 35-year journey from poverty and collective dogmatism to a dynamic if cut-throat era of competition, self-promotion and materialism.” ―Julie Makinen, Los Angeles Times“Age of Ambition [is] eloquent and comprehensive…” ―Jonathan Mirsky, New York Times Book Review“Age of Ambition is a splendid and entertaining picture of 21st-century China…” ―Michael Fathers, Wall Street Journal“Evan Osnos gives us twenty-first-century China the way the best American journalists gave us the Gilded Age--he introduces us to outsized characters, tells tales of aspiration, success, and defeat, rakes the muck of corruption and repression, and captures the tremendous energy, as well as the darker impulses, of a society in the throes of a historic transformation.” ―George Packer, author of The Assassins' Gate and The Unwinding“The very hardest thing to convey about modern China is the combination of hope and despair, idealism and crassness, coordinated mass action and chaotic individual scheming, that you encounter each day. Evan Osnos has captured all parts of this disorienting 'reality,' but he has done so much more. Beautifully written, humane but critical-minded, funny on every page, Age of Ambition offers a better understanding of China's process of 'becoming' than most people could ever gain by living there. China veterans and amateurs alike will find it an illuminating and delightful read.” ―James Fallows, author of China Airborne“How often have travelers asked: 'What is the one book about China that I should read before I depart?' Alas, for years I have had no good answer to this question. But now, Evan Osnos has provided a stellar candidate. Wonderfully engaging, readable and informative, this vivid tableau of actors from all walks of Chinese life goes a long way to helping us make sense out of the often confusing complexity that is today's China.” ―Orville Schell, coauthor of Wealth and Power: China's Long March to the Twenty-first Century“The best book on China I've ever read. Witty, indispensable, and often moving. I look forward to stealing Evan Osnos's wisdom and passing it off as my own for years to come.” ―Gary Shteyngart, author of Little Failure and Super Sad True Love Story“The rise of China is the biggest story of the past twenty-five years. Evan Osnos captures the country in all its striving, thunderous diversity, through a narrative that moves, provokes, and makes us laugh. Age of Ambition is a marvel of great reporting, careful thinking, and powerful writing.” ―Dexter Filkins, author of The Forever War“For most of a decade, Evan Osnos has been one of the most energetic, skilled, and thoughtful observers of China. Whether he's accompanying Chinese tourists to the Best Western in Luxembourg or watching Ai Weiwei blur the lines between performance and protest, Osnos is always engaging. This is a wonderful book.” ―Peter Hessler, author of River Town: Two Years on the Yangtze and Country Driving: A Chinese Road Trip“If you have time to read only one book about China today, read this one. Woven from vignettes of Chinese life at many different levels, it provides unerring insights into what makes the Chinese the people they are while wearing its learning so lightly that the narrative never flags. It should be in every tourist's baggage and every diplomat's library.” ―Philip Short, author of Mao: A Life

China books seem especially tricky to write, because the writer has to please two very different types of American reader: the one who has a great deal of experience with China, and the one who does not. The first reader cringes if he has to read yet another description of how Shenzhen used to be a fishing village; but the second reader can't really understand Shenzhen unless you explain this fact. (As a strange hybrid of these two readers -- I lived in China but have no deep expertise in its history -- I often experience the worst of both worlds.)This book strikes a rare balance. It's a very absorbing read, and its multiple story-lines are impressively woven together, without any of the stitches showing. The people Osnos writes about run the gamut from a public figure like Lin Yifu (the World Bank economist who defected to mainland China from Taiwan in 1979) to an obscure figure like Michael Zhang, a young energetic optimist whom Osnos first meets at a Crazy English conference and then follows for a few years. (Zhang turns into one of the most interesting characters in the book.)Osnos tells all these individual stories against the backdrop of most of the major events in China of the last five years: the violence in Xinjiang, the Liu Xiaobo fiasco, the "Jasmine" events of 2011, Ai Weiwei's ordeal, the flight of Chen Guangcheng, the Bo Xilai scandal, the bullet train crash, and so on. You learn a great deal about all these events, but the book is anchored in its very humane profiles of individual Chinese who are trying to make their lives better.

An brilliant work of authorship. Perhaps one of the finest pieces of writing I have read - ever. It is impossible to capture the essence of a society. Other authors take an econometric approach leading to prosaic works. Evan Osnos is crisp, gets the meaning out while keeping a fast paced, almost thriller like composition. Evan picks unique personalities and with them we travel through new age of China. Book shows how the society is conflicted - it espouses capitalism as the only known source of alleviating poverty, yet it finds that adopting the "capitalistic method" conflicts with their past which espoused homogeneity, a party which is not accountable for its actions and a population which is almost irreparably split into haves and have nots. The book is one of a kind.

Over 20 years ago, I traveled regularly to China to work mostly as a reporter/researcher on business. In the mid-90s, with the economy humming and giant new Chinese companies emerging, most citizens seemed to have struck a bargain: so long as their lives were improving, they were more or less content to look away from politics. The Tiananmen Square movement and its bloody aftermath went unmentioned or were hushed up; the authoritarian regime remained intact and heavy. Now, according to Evan Osnos in his brilliant look at early 21C China, that equation is changing.Osnos breaks the book into 3 sections. First, there is "chasing fortune", which is about the new ambitions and new rich. When I was there, people did not want to stand out as individuals much, but most of them seemed hopeful that things were improving, in a kind of Chinese version of the American dream. Now, tiny sections of society have become immensely rich, spawning all manner of corruption and inequality. This is very fun for the coverage of the aspirations of the young and the stories of some who made it big, including entrepreneurs, bureaucrats, nationalist bloggers, and writers.Second, there is the search for "truth". This is about those who are pushing against the system, challenging it overtly over the internet as well as by legal action. Osnos' coverage ranges from dissidents to investigative journalists and activists. To his credit, Osnos sought out a wide array of people, getting to know many of them personally and following their careers as the book progressed. Their trials and tribulations can be very difficult and painful, as in the efforts to break the performance artist and architect Ai Weiwei. But there is also a journalist who instinctually knows just how far she should push things, often getting warnings and even brief periods of detention. I was astonished to learn that 1 in 100 people in China is engaged in some form of state-sponsored information control, either as censorship or surveillance or covert counter-agitprop. Though the regime is holding on, no one seems to believe in its ideology anymore; many even doubt its competence. (I.e. the popular view in the circles I wrote in - that an authoritarian regime is superior because it can make decisions quickly and with few people involved - appears to stupidly over-estimate its accomplishments.)Finally, there is the section on "faith", exploring the meaning in their lives, be it religious, ideological, or political. This follows the evolution of characters we've gotten to know. What struck me was the feeling that growth and opportunity were stalling, that the combination of official opaqueness and frustrated ambitions were swelling into what could become an immense challenge to the party if it seeks to maintain its monopoly on power. In other words, the old bargain is in dire need of renewal, perhaps in the form of new freedoms and even the emergence of new parties, particularly if economic growth is slowing. This was the thing that had most changed since I explored corporate boardrooms, met with talented workers, and taught writing at Beida. It is a potential sea change that no one should under-estimate.Osnos' book is one of the best recent ones I have read on China. It is mostly about the period he was there, 2005-2013, which saw the rise of the internet and social networking (his portrayal of their impact under the heavy hand of the sate is nuanced and surprising). As such, it is a snapshot and should be read now, as it will no doubt be over-taken by events in the near future. Beyond his first rate reporting, Osnos is a beautiful writer. It was a great update for me, an old hand China watcher. Recommended with enthusiasm.
