I was very disappointed in this book. Instead of talking about specific spiritual actions we can take, about what to do to recover from darkness (that was what I was expecting from the book title), he just talks about the source of our problems - sin. And the solution to our problems - God. His answer is a very general "Grow closer to God in prayer." And this whole book has been done so much better in many other books, like "The Problem of Pain" by C.S. Lewis, or "Dark Night of the Soul" by St. John of the Cross. So if you're looking for a book with suggestions on what to do to overcome depression, or other dark times, I don't think this book will help you much. I would recommend either of the other two books, or anything else.

This is the one to keep by the bed at night, when you wake up at 3am and are worried about....whatever. Fr. Groeschel does a great job (as usual) in giving us guidance and peace, and this book covers such topics as "What to do when others let you down", "What to do when you let yourself down", "What to do when it all falls apart".....etc. I recommend it to Catholcs and non-Catholics alike.

It is a very pretty cover & most of it is very durable. The only complaint I have is the front graphics. It is a vinyl like material & after only week of use it is already starting to come off in little pieces here & there. It is ashamed because it is so very pretty. I already have plans to try to remove the vinyl when it gets real bad (at the current rate it should be by next month) & depending upon what is underneath, I will hotglue ribbons or flowers on it.It is also quite big. it is for a Large Bible not a medium size one like most kids have.

Listed dimensions were off, doesn't fit my daughter's bible.Great cover otherwise.

E. Randolph Richards (PhD, Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary) is dean and professor of biblical studies in the School of Ministry at Palm Beach Atlantic University. He is a popular speaker and has authored and coauthored dozens of books and articles, including Paul Behaving Badly, A Little Book for New Bible Scholars, Rediscovering Jesus, Misreading Scripture with Western Eyes, Rediscovering Paul, The Story of Israel, and Paul and First-Century Letter Writing. Early on in their ministry he and his wife Stacia were appointed as missionaries to east Indonesia, where he taught for eight years at an Indonesian seminary. Missions remain on the hearts of Randy and Stacia. Randy leads mission trips and conducts missionary training workshops and regularly leads tours of the Holy Land, Turkey, Greece, and Italy. He has served as interim pastor of numerous churches and is currently a teaching pastor. He and Stacia reside in Palm Beach, Florida.

While very earnest and well-meaning, this book would be more aptly titled: "Misreading Indonesian Culture with Western Eyes." This is because the book continually references Indonesian culture with Western culture in order to show how things — words, events, customs — can mean very different things in different parts of the world. This is certainly an admirable goal and the book makes a very strong case for multicultural understanding. But it’s basically Anthropology 101. This would be great if we were studying anthropology, but the book promises, and mainly fails to deliver, much in the way of understanding biblical scriptures in any meaningful way. (There is at least one notable exception…below). Lack of a subject index is particularly vexing, esp. considering there is an author index, a scripture index and footnotes.The authors, both well-credentialed evangelistic theologians, have each spent significant time in various locales ranging from Arkansas (Brandon) to Indonesia (Randy) and use their experiences in far-flung stations to make good points about how an expression in one place is interpreted quite differently in others. “The most powerful cultural values are those that go without being said” (12). Unfortunately, most of the cross-cultural examples come from 21st century Indonesia (Randy), not 1st century Palestine. Arguably, the collectivist, family-oriented Indonesia of 2002 is a good place to make a case for not assuming that all people understand things the same way, but gives little insight into what may have been going on in Nazareth 2,000 years ago. Although there are hundreds of scriptural references, from Genesis to Revelations, very few of them actually provide any insight into how we moderns are supposedly misreading scripture based on our 21st century mores. And many of the putative insights are little more than minute, nitpicky differentiations, as in the discussion of 1st C “modesty” where they make a big deal out of the difference between “sexual modesty” and “public modesty” in the matter of women covering their heads (43). Another notable example is the discussion of what it means to be “first” (relating to Paul’s letter about Adam being born first and thus having authority over women in teaching). The authors claim that it’s our modern understanding of ‘first’ as meaning “better” which leads us astray, since in biblical times the rules of primogeniture simply meant the firstborn received the greater inheritance, the family title, assumed responsibility etc.….the authors say (13). But if that doesn’t somehow mean “better” or “preferred” it’s hard to know what would. In fact, its seems to the modern reader to be a rather dodgy apologetic for giving women 2nd-hand status.That said, one excellent insight has to do with the use of the Greek word 'makarios' in the Sermon on the Mount (the Beatitudes), usually translated as “blessed” or “blessing.” But the Greek more properly translates as “a feeling of contentment” or “when one knows one’s place in the world and is satisfied with that place” (75). The English language prefers clear subjects for its verbs, so it goes without saying (for us) that God blesses people. So we interpret the verse at Matt 5:9 as “If you are a peacemaker, then God will bless you.” But what the Jesus figure really meant was: “If you are a peacemaker, then you are in your happy place.” In other words, you will experience the feeling of contentment with your life if you are a peacemaker. This is part of a discussion on the important Whorfian hypothesis (aka Sapir-Whorf) to account for how our language shapes our worldview and in turn filters what we notice and how we interpret reality (71). Unfortunately, having made the point about makarios, the book doesn’t then go ahead and relate this wonderful theme to the actual subject matter of the book. We do however get a delightful example of the many distinctions of the word ‘rice’ in Indonesia compared to Western society (73) — as well as the Indonesian ideas of “privacy” and “quiet time.”Interestingly, we also learn that the term 'Galatae' (as in the epistle to the Galatians) was used by the Greeks to denote Celtic tribes in the 270s BCE. The "Land of the Celts" is the Latin transliteration of the Greek 'celtica.' However, the authors don’t even get this quite right, calling the Roman term for Galatia a “mispronunciation of the word Celts” (57).Alas, along the way the authors make what we might politely call “rookie mistakes,” considering that one (Randy) is a Ph.D. and dean of the School of Ministry at Palm Beach Atlantic University and the other (Brandon) is completing his doctorate in theology. For example, they try to introduce a point saying, “assuming the first gospel was written by the disciple Matthew” (79) — yet most biblical scholars acknowledge, and have for decades, that Mark was the first gospel composed (despite the conventional order presented in the N.T.) . Furthermore, Matt is usually dated toward the last quarter of the 1st C, attributed to a Greek-speaking anonymous Jew in Syria, not an Aramaic-speaking contemporary of Jesus. This is first-year theology school stuff.Another oddity has to do with the question of whether there were female apostles in the early church. The authors bring up Junia and co-laborer (or husband?) Andronicus, whom the authors say are “both called apostles” in Rom 16:7. The effort to show how our modern culture clings to “rules” rather than “relationships” is laudable but once again their scholarship is lacking. They do acknowledge that scholars hotly debate about Junia/Junias, but then make the wild claim that “scholarship has now shown conclusively that Junia is a feminine name” (172). But that’s either a red herring or simple lack of awareness of the debate since the question has never been whether ‘Junia’ is feminine, but whether the Greek word Paul uses is ᾿Ιουνιᾶν or ᾿Ιουνίαν [‘iounia(s)] and is therefore best translated as Junia or Junias. Further, the real debate questions whether Paul was saying “of note among the apostles” to mean “prominent among” or “well known to the apostles.”This IVP publication is full of gross over-generalizations (“In the West, rules must apply to everyone and they must apply all the time”) (168) and, many people thought the world was going to end in 2000…so we called it Y2K (145); and Westerners think mainly in terms of 'chronos' (like clock time) whereas ancients thought in terms of 'kairos' (seasons, situations) (142). Of course we get an excellent Indonesian example of the difference there (139).Nevertheless, while the concept of this book is excellent — because the Middle Eastern bible was written in terms of collectivism, honor and shame, and family expectations, we need to be sensitive to the differences in cultural outlooks — there are much better treatments of the theme like Spong’s Biblical Literalism: A Gentile Heresy or his Liberating the Gospels: Reading the Bible with Jewish Eyes. or Scott Korb's Life in Year One. These (and others) address the “misreading” issues in a much more scholarly and on-topic way with fewer diversions into well-meaning but generic Intro to Anthropology discussions.Finally, a style note. Because there are two authors with different missionary experiences, the authors chose to write incessantly in first person mode with “I (Randy) was often struck that telling stories for Indonesians…” (147) or “My (Brandon’s) acting career…” (100). This was fine for a while but after about a hundred instances, we yearn for a simple 3rd-person style: “Brandon’s acting career…”

I was really excited to get this book, but the absolute best part is the Introduction. As the book progressed, I found myself wondering how on earth people who so seriously misunderstand basic gospel principles ended up teaching at a Bible college (one of the authors) or teaching world religions at a secular college (the other author). For example, they try to say that the reason anyone mentioned where someone was from in the Bible is because they were racist - I’m sorry, but Rebecca does not bring up the place Esau’s wife is from because she’s racist, she brings it up because it means they are not the same religion, and Esau has therefore married outside of the covenant! They twist things in scriptural passages so intensely (both in what they think most people understand them to say and in what they claim the passages “really” say) in their effort to make a point, that I could barely finish the book. There are so many missed opportunities to point out differences in Eastern and Western thought, it’s almost absurd that the authors focused on what they did. This book is completely ridiculous, a major disappointment, and ultimately a waste of money. Definitely do NOT recommend.

I have served as a missionary in The Gambia in West Africa and I wish I had had this book before I went. My first Sunday at my new church there my new pastor asked me to preach. I stood on one side of the church, pointed to the middle of the church and said that from this view is how I, from the West, see God. I moved to the other side of the church and again pointed to the center saying here's where they see God from. I told them I came as a missionary to help them to learn about God, but also, through the different way they see Him, they would also be teaching me about God, and that in the end they would send me, with my new way of seeing God, back to America to be a missionary here. There definitely are many cultural differences between America and the rest of the world, but I found that to be one of the real joys of working with Christians elsewhere. I would highly recommend this book to those who want to move from their relationship being knowing more about God to it being about knowing God more.

I am combining this with another book, but I like the approach to developing the skills readiness needed to truly quit. A bit of picking and choosing is necessary and I find myself skipping some fluff and going back and forth, but it has been helpful and helped me gain more confidence at being able to accept and get past cravings. Some exercises seem like they were devised by non-smokers, like vocalising sighs or ohms while exhaling smoke. That's just unpleasant. The book also had some insightful things to say about lapse and relapse, acceptance and the fear of failure.

I bought this book for a relative who wanted to quit smoking. Probably this one is the best quitting smoking book on the market. ( If not the best!)Mindfulness, passive meditation, is a great way not just for quitting smoking but for other areas in life. The exercises on the book are also wonderful! Thanks for this remarkable book!

In an age of commercials for patches and gum that focus on how quitting doesn't suck and that celebrate swapping out nicotine gum for a cigarette, this book offers something different--mindfulness. I've known "former" smokers who have been on the patch for years. While they might smell better and spend less time outside, they were still not dealing with the reasons they used nicotine as a coping tool in the first place. They merely swapped one form for another. And, as Samov and Samov point out, smoking is not a disease--why should we treat it with pharmacueticals as if it were?Samov and Samov take a different pathway here; instead of demonizing the behavior they seek to help the smoker understand the behavior and the actual benefits of smoking that keep them going back for another cigarette. The first portion of the book discusses the actual physical effects of smoking and helps the reader to understand that there is more to smoking than just the selfish desire to smoke. I'd recommend this first chapter to not only smokers wanting to cut back, but also to their significant others who want to better understand the urge to smoke and how smoking truly is a coping tool.The second section of the book offers a 30 day prep plan--smoking meditations and koans that lead to more mindful smoking. The goal here is to disrupt the patterns we have with smoking and to make it a deliberate act and choice. The koans or thought exercises get the reader to reflect on larger questions like "what is a nonsmoking" and requires that they look beyond habitual actions.Through focusing on skillpower instead of willpower, the authors provide a daily practice that helps the smoker to refocus and be mindful of their actions and of the potential effects of those actions. In addition to the 30 days of prep work designed to awaken the smoking zombie/sleep smoker, there is also a section of 20 breathing exercises that can help usher in the "wind of change" by teaching practices like "smoking air."As a former smoker (and the child of a life-long smoker and a former smoker), I appreciate the way in which there are practical steps and exercises to the program and that it is customizable. The book doesn't say that quitting is the only way to go--instead, there are several pathways the reader can choose and the book covers the issue of relapse, as well as craving control. I am a devotee if this series but I found this one overlong and patently absurd. Clearly the author has taken dead aim at the practice of welfare cheating which must be rampant in Denmark as well as the US. However, the storyline is not remotely credible and the repetitiveness is mind numbing. The book runs to almost 500 pages, at least 100 pages too long. One particular scene is retold 4 times from 4 different points of view, unnecessary and boring.On the plus side, Carl Morck and his team continue to be engaging although Assad does not have as many malapropisms as readers may be used to. This story is mainly centered around Rose and her abusive father but it makes little sense. I am used to suspending belief in crime stories but this one is over the top!! Let’s hope for better the next time.

The Scarred Woman is a powerful detective thriller involving deceit, fraud, and multiple murders that is brilliantly written to evoke every reader's emotion. The plot revolves around the Danish welfare system and its many abuses leading to a host of abuses and character flaws.The Department Q squad, led by Carl Morck, is a highly polished gem of interesting characters interacting with each other to solve cold-case files that have long been shelved.The ending is very satisfying and is the first novel of this genre to bring tears to my eyes. I can't recommend this author and this Department Q series highly enough.

There is so much murdering going on in this book, by so many killers, that it borders on absurd. At first I found many of the personalities unbelievable, but after a while I went with it and got fascinated.The Department Q books are best read from the beginning, to appreciate the characters of Carl Moerck and his quirky team. The first book, The Keeper of Lost Causes, is still my favorite. But I'll never miss one of these books if I can help it.In the course of this story several cases unfold. Not all belong to Department Q, whose mandate is investigating unsolved murders. But Carl ignores jurisdictions because he and his team discover possible links between the cases. At the same time they are investigating the crisis of Rose, a team member with psychological problems who has gone completely off the deep end.There's tons of action, with the body count constantly mounting. It's an emotional war zone.I really like this writer and his cast of characters, all with their different issues and charms.

Much to like in this latest crime novel in the Department Q series, but its enjoyment is probably enhanced if you are familiar with preceding books. The focus of "The Scarred Woman" is very much on one of the Department's regular characters and deals with a life trauma that affects all of her colleagues. Overlaid on that central story is a multi-faceted murder investigation that, in its flow, takes on abuses of Denmark's social support system. In that subplot, an avenging angel (a social caseworker) who is given license by a cancer diagnosis, sets out to right a few wrongs before she is terminated by her illness.There are several characters who qualify to represent the scarred woman of the title. All fit author Jussi Adler-Olsen's profile of people who have been badly parented as children and live with their wounds as handicapped adults.A good read, especially for those following this estimable series

My husband and I just finished the audio edition of this mystery. It's the end of the Thanksgiving weekend for us, so we listened to it both to and from our daughter's home about 7 hours away. This is one of the most entertaining books in this series. Detective Carl Mork (sp?) has always included some humor in his novels, but with this book he really let his comic genius loose. The book starts out with a group of young, irresponsible women who are on welfare and follows them through multiple high jinks as they try to commit a crime. Their bumbling escapades kept me and my husband laughing frequently on our trip. Carl is at his acerbic best and Assad continues to botch his funny understanding of a foreign language.One reviewer mentioned Rose was sidelined, but I think she was at the center of the plot as she confronts her demons. She may not have been helped solve the case but her presence was always felt by my husband and me. We got home before the audio book was finished so we finished it off on the sofa. Towards the end the plot moved at a galloping speed so we had to see it through to the end.This can be read as a stand alone book, but it will have more meaning and humor if the previous novels are read first. This mismatched group in department Q are worth getting to know.

This was the most enjoyable one yet. I love the characters around Carl, Rose for her eccentricities and Assad for his humor, altho it is time to stop the malaproprisms. He's been a new immigrant long enough. What this novel deals with are amoral young leeches in the Danish welfare system, willing to do anything to stay on the dole. Several plot strands merge as Rose grapples with her demons, and three of the above mentioned bottom feeders drive their case worker to well beyond distraction. Carl, Assad, and even hapless Gordon must try to clear their cold cases without Rose while trying to help their troubled, independent colleague. The final scenes would be an acceptable end to the series but I hope that these characters take us on many more Danish cold case adventures.
